Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, grab a coffee, Rusty here. Let’s talk Blackhead over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a slow start. Monday morning is a bit of a dud, with a weak 4ft easterly windswell and a light breeze from the east that’s onshore. The energy is average (262) and the water’s at 55°, which is pretty normal for this time of year. Not much to get excited about.
The first real standout is Tuesday the 7th. Tuesday morning is the pick of the early days. We’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the east-northeast with a 9-second period. The combined energy is pumping (1816), and the wind is dead calm – glassy. The wave comment says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and that’s right. At 8ft, that’s expert territory, but if you’ve got the skills, this is going to be a clean, powerful session. The offshore wind for Blackhead is from the west, but the glassy conditions will make it work.
Wednesday the 8th morning is another cracker. The swell drops to 8ft from the east, but the period stretches to 11 seconds, giving it more grunt (1829). And the wind is a clean 6 mph offshore from the west. That’s proper clean surf, perfect for the point. This is a top-tier window for experienced surfers.
Things get messy after that. Thursday and Friday the 9th and 10th get blown out by strong southerly and south-easterly winds, pushing the swell up to 15ft but with terrible cross-shore chop. Not for the faint-hearted.
The second week is a mixed bag, but there’s a promising window around the 13th. Monday morning the 13th sees a 3ft groundswell from the south with a very long 12-second period and light cross-offshore winds. The energy is moderate (474), and it’ll be clean. That long period will make for some nice, lined-up waves.
The end of the run, from the 15th onward, is mostly small and weak. The 15th Wednesday morning has a 4ft north-easterly windswell with a clean offshore breeze, but it’s a short 8-second period. The 21st Tuesday morning might be worth a look with a 4ft southerly swell, clean conditions, and a very long 17-second period groundswell (499 energy). That’s a long wait, but it’s a nice note to end on.
Overall, the best window is hands-down Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th. Get in the water those mornings.
Rusty.
