The Lowdown
Right then, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming our way for Blackhead. It’s a point break, exposed to the south-east, and it’s got a reputation for being inconsistent. The water’s sitting at about 54°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent suit.
The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. We’ve got plenty of swell rolling in, but the wind’s going to be a pain for a lot of it. The real standout is shaping up to be Thursday the 20th. That morning, we’ll see a clean 6ft S swell with a light offshore breeze from the WSW. The wave energy is moderate (866), but those light winds will make for some tidy lines. The afternoon pushes it up a notch to 7ft S swell with a bit more energy (1106), though the wind swings cross-off. Still, it’s lookin’ good for experienced surfers. That Thursday is your best bet.
Before that, the early part of the week has serious size but serious wind. Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th are pumping with 8ft to 15ft SSE to SSW swells, but with 15 to 25 mph cross-off winds, it’s going to be a battle. The combined energy is huge (up to 3753), but with those winds and the short periods (8-10 secs), it’s a choppy mess for all but the most experienced. Wednesday the 19th is still big, with a 13ft S swell in the morning and a long 15-second period. That long period will make it tricky at a point break; it might fatten up or wrap too fast.
Friday the 21st is a real tease. The morning has a gorgeous 5ft S swell with a 16-second period and light NNW winds – that’s prime groundswell. But it’s cross-off, and the energy is only moderate (1321). The afternoon drops to 5ft, still good.
Then we hit a proper lull. From Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 24th morning, it’s small and weak. Swell drops under 3ft, energy falls below 215, and the wind is messy. A few days of nothing much.
Things start to stir again from Monday afternoon the 24th into Tuesday the 25th. We get a fresh offshore breeze from the WNW with a 4ft to 8ft SSW swell, but the period is long (14-16 seconds) and the wind gets up to a near gale on Tuesday afternoon (34 mph). That’ll be near-impossible to paddle into.
The very end of the month and into September looks interesting. Friday morning the 28th has a clean 6ft SSW swell with light northerly winds. Saturday the 29th morning is tiny but clean, and then Sunday the 30th has another 6ft S swell with light winds. Then Tuesday, the 1st of September, swings back with a 5ft to 6ft SSW swell and clean, cross-off winds. That Tuesday could be a hidden gem.
Overall, the standout is Thursday the 20th – it’s the cleanest of the biggish swells. The 1st of September is also one to keep an eye on.
Rusty.
