Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ning Nong Point and Reef over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way for Ning Nong Point and Reef.
We’ve got a pretty rough start to the forecast period. The first few days are a write-off. Thursday, 9th July, has a solid 16 ft SSE swell running, but the wind is howling from the south at 25 mph, cross-on, and it’s just a mess. The combined energy is massive (4888), but the conditions are poor, so don’t even bother. That carries on through Friday, Saturday, and into Sunday morning—the swell drops, but the wind is still cross or cross-on, and the scores are low. It’s not until Sunday, 12th July, that we get a glimpse of something decent. The swell is down to 4 ft from the SSW with a 13-second period, and the wind shifts to a light NNE offshore. The water is 54°, which is about normal for this time of year. The morning session is clean, with a combined energy of 584 (moderate), and it’s a good option for a paddle if you’re keen. The afternoon is similar with a 4 ft SSW swell and glassy conditions. But it’s small, so don’t expect much.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Monday, 13th July, right through to Thursday, 16th July, the swell drops below 3 ft, and the wind stays cross-off or cross-on. The combined energy dips into the double digits (35 to 261), and there’s nothing worth paddling out for. That’s a few days of flatness.
The next real standout comes on Friday, 17th July. The afternoon session is the pick: a 6 ft SE swell with a 14-second period, glassy conditions, and a combined energy of 1444 (moderate). The wind is light from the south, and it’s glassy. This is an excellent option for experienced surfers. The morning on Friday has a 6 ft ESE swell with a 16-second period, but it’s a little cross-on, so the afternoon is cleaner.
Saturday, 18th July, keeps the run going. The morning has a 6 ft SE swell with a 13-second period, light NNW cross-off breeze, and a combined energy of 1225 (moderate). It’s clean and excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon drops to 3 ft from the ESE with a 15-second period, but it’s cross-shore, so not as good.
Sunday, 19th July, is another strong day. The morning has a 5 ft ESE swell with a 13-second period, light NNE cross-off wind, and clean conditions. The afternoon is even better: a 5 ft SSW swell with a very long 18-second period, light north cross-off breeze, and a combined energy of 1854 (moderate). That’s clean and excellent for experienced surfers.
Then we get a mellow drop-off on Monday, 20th July, with small surf and a glassy afternoon, but nothing to get excited about. Tuesday, 21st July, picks up again with a 8 ft E swell (11-second period) in the morning, light east cross-off wind, and clean conditions. The combined energy is 1428 (moderate). That’s excellent for experienced surfers, but the swell is over 8 ft, so it’s experts only. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 7 ft.
Wednesday, 22nd July, is marginal with a 6 ft E swell but the wind picks up to 16 mph cross-off, so it’s not as clean.
Now, the big event. Thursday, 23rd July, the swell jumps to 13 ft from the SSW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is 2793 (strong). The wind is cross-off, but the swell is too big for this break. Same on Friday, 24th July: a 18 ft SSW swell in the morning, glassy, with a combined energy of 5927 (very strong). The afternoon hits 20 ft from the SSW with a combined energy of 7879 (very strong). Both days are labelled as too big for this break, so only the most hardcore experts should even think about it, and even then, it’s risky.
The real standout of the whole outlook is the Friday, 17th July afternoon session: 6 ft SE swell, 14-second period, glassy conditions, and a combined energy of 1444. That’s clean, excellent, and the best on offer. The Sunday, 19th July afternoon is also a cracker, with 5 ft SSW swell, an 18-second period, and clean conditions.
Rusty.
