The Lowdown
Howdy, Rusty here. Let’s check what’s shaking at Ning Nong Point and Reef for the next couple of weeks.
The first real surf hits on Saturday the 18th of July. Swell is a solid 8 ft from the SSW, with a period of 22 seconds – that’s proper long-period groundswell, full of energy (combined energy is 7002). The water temp is 55°, about normal for this time of year. Wind is light at 6 mph from the W, blowing cross-on, so there’s a little texture on the face. It’s a goer for the experienced crew, but not pristine.
Sunday the 19th is a letdown. The morning has 7 ft SSW swell, period 16 seconds, but the wind is onshore from the SSW at 6 mph, making it marginal. The afternoon gets worse – 8 ft SSW swell with a 9 mph cross-on Southerly, turning it choppy. Skip it.
Monday the 20th is the clear winner. The morning session is cleaned up by a light 3 mph cross-off from the ESE, with a 7 ft SSW swell, period 14 seconds. The water is glassy, and the report says excellent surf for experienced surfers. Energy is 3830 – solid. The afternoon is a brute: 12 ft of SSW swell, 19-second period, and a massive 7743 energy reading, but the wind is cross-on from the SSE and it’s just too big for the break. Leave that one for the kamikazes.
Tuesday the 21st is clean again with light cross-off winds, but the swell is down to 8 ft and 7 ft, with periods of 13-14 seconds. It’s good, clean, but not as pumping as Monday morning.
Wednesday the 22nd gets glassy in the morning – a 4 ft SSW swell, period 12 seconds, with a 3 mph ENE wind. Dead flat calm, but the swell is small. The afternoon goes cross-on and drops to 3 ft.
From Thursday the 23rd through the end of July, the surf goes to sleep. Swell drops to 3 ft, then 1 ft, then 0.6 ft, with fresh to strong winds. A tiny bump on the 25th Saturday afternoon gives 2 ft of SE swell, period 16 seconds, but it’s cross-on and marginal. Not worth the drive.
Sunday the 26th is a windy mess: 12 ft of short-period (8 seconds) SSW swell with 15-18 mph cross-on winds. That’s kite-surfing territory, not for a log or a thruster.
The first week of August offers a glimmer on the 1st with 5 ft SSW swell, but the wind is onshore or cross-on. The 2nd of August is a total washout with 6 ft and 22 mph onshore winds.
The one true standout in this entire 16-day stretch is Monday morning, July 20th at Ning Nong Point and Reef. Clean, 7 ft of SSW groundswell, light cross-off breeze, and primo conditions for the experienced surfer. Be there.
