The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s coming up at Ning Nong Point and Reef. This is a reef and point setup, so it’s got some shape to it. Water temp is sitting around 54°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year – nothing unusual.
Right now, we’re looking at a rough start. Tuesday morning, the wind is howling onshore from the SSW at 22 mph and the swell is a messy 13 ft with a short period of 9 seconds. Combined energy is through the roof at 2361, but it’s just blown-out junk. Tuesday afternoon doesn't get any better – same direction, wind cranking at 25 mph, swell jumping to 18 ft and energy spiking to 6850. This is not surfable for anyone. It's a write-off.
Wednesday continues the theme. A big S swell at 15 ft with a longer 14-second period and cross-on wind. Energy is huge at 8175, but the wind kills it. By Wednesday afternoon the swell drops to 10 ft and the wind eases, but it's still onshore and messy. Not worth paddling out.
Thursday morning shows a bit of hope – swell drops to 7 ft from the S at 12 seconds, and the wind lightens to 6 mph onshore. Energy is down to 1265. It’s marginal, but if you’re desperate, maybe. Thursday afternoon is smaller again at 6 ft and cross-on breeze – still not great.
Friday is a tease. Clean skies, cross-off wind from the NNW at 16 mph, swell 6 ft from the SSW with a nice 14-second period. It looks clean, but the energy is only 1158 and the quality score is low. It’s rideable but not a standout.
Saturday and Sunday are a total mess – strong cross-shore winds, tiny swell, and lumpy conditions. Don’t bother.
Monday the 24th stays windy and messy with onshore crosswinds. Not much to get excited about.
Then things change. Tuesday the 25th is the first real standout. Light cross-off wind from the E at 6 mph, swell 7 ft from the SSW with a very long 16-second period. Energy is 2328, and the conditions are clean. This is groundswell – long lines, good shape, but at 7 ft it’s more for experienced surfers. That long period will make it break a bit straight at a beach, but here at Ning Nong Point and Reef, it should wrap in nicely. Tuesday afternoon is much the same with a 15-second period and light wind. This is your best window.
Wednesday the 26th is let down by strong NW winds again – clean but cross-off and gusty, so the quality drops.
Thursday the 27th afternoon could surprise – light ESE wind at 3 mph, cross-off, 5 ft S swell at 11 seconds. Clean conditions, decent for a session.
Then there’s a lull until Sunday the 30th. That morning and afternoon both score well – clean, cross-off wind, 6 ft SSW swell with a 13 to 14-second period. Energy around 1100. Good clean waves for the experienced crew.
Monday the 31st morning is even better – 6 ft SSW swell at a very long 16 seconds, clean conditions, energy at 2073. That’s another standout morning. But watch out – Monday afternoon the swell jumps to 16 ft, and while the wind is light, that’s way too big for this break. Only for the absolute experts, and even then, it's sketchy.
Tuesday the 1st of September is the top pick of the whole forecast. Light offshore wind from the ENE at 3 to 6 mph, 10 ft S swell with a 14-second period. Energy is 3723. This is powerful, clean, and lined up. It’s big, so only for experienced surfers, but if you’re up for it, this is the one.
After that, Wednesday the 2nd sees the wind swing onshore again and the quality drops right off.
So overall, you’ve got a rough first week, but the second half of the period has two clear standouts: Tuesday the 25th and Tuesday the 1st of September. The 1st of September is the best on offer – just be ready for a solid swell.
Stay safe out there.
