Updates in  hr  min  s Forecast update imminent

G’day, Rusty here. Look, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag on the horizon for Ning Nong Point and Reef, but there’s a real standout window if you’re patient and know what you’re doing. For the first stretch, we’re looking at a rough, windy start with some serious lumps but dodgy conditions, so we’ll have to wait it out.

The opening days are pretty grim. Monday the 6th has a sloppy 7ft to 8ft SSW swell with a short, weak period of 6-7 seconds and a fresh cross-onshore breeze making it choppy and lumpy. Wave energy is moderate (594 to 818), but the wind is just killing it. Tuesday the 7th isn’t much better – the swell jumps to 8ft from the ESE, period up to 9 seconds, and while the morning is cross-off (clean lines), the wind is a fresh 35 km/h, so it’ll be a battle. Afternoon gets messy with strong cross-shore wind and that 10ft E swell turning into a washing machine. Wednesday the 8th stays poor – 10ft E swell, fresh cross-onshore, lumpy. Thursday the 9th is a full-on event: a massive 18ft SSE swell with strong cross-onshore winds at 45 km/h – wave energy is monstrous (6877), but that’s a no-go for paddling, might be a kite day only if you’re crazy. Friday and Saturday the 10th-11th are still poor with moderate onshore wind and choppy 8ft to 6ft waves.

Now, here’s the good news. Sunday the 12th is the clear standout. The morning is glassy – absolutely dead calm wind from the ENE at 5 km/h – and we’ve got a 3ft SSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period. That’s a proper, long-period groundswell, which will wrap into this point and reef setup beautifully, offering smooth, lined-up waves. Wave energy is moderate (570). The afternoon gets even better: 5ft SSW swell at 14 seconds, clean and cross-off, and the energy climbs to 1039 – moderate but solid. This is the best on offer, and with the reef and point handling that long-period swell, the shape should be quality. It’s an advanced break, and it can get crowded sometimes, so get in early. The water temp is about 55°, which is pretty average for July, nothing weird.

Monday the 13th still has some clean 4ft SSW swell at 12 seconds with a light offshore, but it’s smaller. After that, from Tuesday the 14th through the 16th, the swell drops right off into the 1ft to 2ft range – tiny, weak, not worth the paddle. Then we get a pulse on the weekend. Sunday the 19th brings a huge 18ft SSW swell again, with a gentle offshore wind (15 km/h from the NE) and clean conditions. But here’s the thing – the forecast says it’s too big for this break. Wave energy is off the charts (5775). This is only for absolute experts, and even then, it’ll be a beast. Monday the 20th has a strong offshore wind (40 km/h from the ENE) making it clean but hard to paddle into on a dropping 8ft S swell. That’s a tough session.

Bottom line: mark your calendar for the morning of Sunday, July 12 – glassy conditions, that long-period SSW groundswell, and a reef/point that loves it. That’s the one. The rest is either blown out, too small, or too huge for most.

Rusty.
