Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's cooking for Ning Nong Point and Reef. I'll be straight with you – it's a bit of a mixed bag, and you'll have to be patient for the good stuff.
Right now, the water temp is sitting at 55°, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, no surprises there.
We're kicking off on Friday, July 3rd, but it's not looking great. We've got a 4 ft swell from the east, combined energy of 292. The wind is a cross-off from the NNW at 22 mph, but the data calls it "poor surf conditions". That's a no-go.
Saturday the 4th isn't much better. It's marginal at best, with 4 ft east swell and similar cross-off winds. The forecast is giving it a thumbs down, so I'd save your energy.
Sunday the 5th is basically flat. A tiny 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft swell with a combined energy of just 22. Don't bother.
Monday the 6th looks messy in the morning with a 7 ft SSW swell, but a strong cross-onshore wind of 22 mph from the SSE is going to make it lumpy. The energy is moderate at 532. The afternoon, however, gets interesting. The wind drops to a light breeze from the east at 6 mph, creating a clean cross-off. The swell jumps a bit to 8 ft from the ESE, but with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is strong at 924. The data says "expect very good surf conditions," so Monday afternoon could be a sneaky good window if you can get out there.
Now, Tuesday the 7th. Tuesday morning is a standout for the big dogs. We’re looking at an 12 ft swell from the south, period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a whopping 2662. The wind is a slight air from the east – glassy conditions. But, and this is a big but, the data warns it's predicted to be too big for this break. At over 8 ft, this is strictly for experts only. The afternoon sees the swell drop to 10 ft but the wind swings onshore from the south, making it choppy.
From Wednesday the 8th all the way through to Saturday the 18th, the outlook is grim. We get a series of big, messy swells with strong onshore winds. On Wednesday the 8th we see a 16 ft swell from the SE (combined energy 4802) but with a fresh cross-onshore, it'll be a washing machine. This pattern of 7 ft to 10 ft surf with poor wind continues day after day. There are a few moments on Saturday the 11th (5 ft to 6 ft) and Monday the 13th (8 ft) where the wind looks lighter, but it's still tagged as marginal.
Given the persistent onshore wind and solid swell sizes, if you're into kite surfing, this stretch from the 8th to the 15th looks way more interesting than it does for paddling.
To sum it up: your best bet is Monday afternoon, July 6th for a clean, fun wave. If you're a hardcore expert, Tuesday morning, July 7th might be one for the memory banks, but be very careful out there. After that, it's a long dry spell of poor conditions until the second week, where nothing really stands out even in the medium-range outlook.
Stay safe, and don't leave your wetties in the car for too long.
