Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s look at what we’ve got coming in for Cave Rock.
The week kicks off with a solid pulse of groundswell, but it’s all aimed at the advanced crew. For the first three days we’ve got a clean, strong S/SSE swell running with a nice 12 to 13-second period, and water temps sitting right on the money at 71°, bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there. Friday morning is the real standout early on. We’re looking at 8ft S swell, glassy conditions, and the combined energy is pumping at 2340 – that’s strong, powerful stuff. It’s an exposed reef setup, so that long-period energy will line up nicely, but the size and power mean it’s strictly for the experienced. The offshore wind is NW, which is perfect for keeping it clean. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so get in early.
Saturday morning holds similar quality with a 8ft SSE swell, still glassy, still powerful (2078 combined energy). Another top window for the pros. By Sunday morning the swell eases to 6ft, but the wind is clean cross-off, and the energy drops to 840 – still good, more manageable, but the quality is still there.
Then we hit a flat, quiet spell. From Monday the 6th all the way through to Thursday the 10th it’s small and weak, with combined energy barely scratching a few hundred. We’re talking ankle to knee-high waves at best, and most of that time the wind is messy or onshore. A proper lull setting in for close to a week.
Friday the 10th sees a new S swell arriving, 5ft with a 14-second period, but the cross-shore wind keeps it from being clean. The energy is back over 1000, but it’s a bit chopped up. Saturday the 11th brings a 6ft S groundswell with a very long 16-second period, but wind is cross-onshore, so it’s lumpy. That long period will favour the reef, but the wind is the spoiler.
Looking further out, Friday the 17th morning looks like another gem. A clean 5ft S swell with glassy conditions – that’s a classic combo, combined energy at 948, clean lines and no wind. This one is a real standout for the quieter period. The following Saturday the 18th sees a big jump in size – the afternoon bumps up to 16ft S swell with a 12-second period, and the combined energy goes through the roof at 6805. That is massive, powerful, and heavy. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, the size will make it a serious handful. The cross-shore wind will add some texture, so it’s not perfect, but the raw power is undeniable. That’s a long-range call though, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the first weekend (July 3rd and 4th mornings) and then Friday July 17th morning are your best bets for clean, powerful waves at Cave Rock.
Rusty.
