The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up for Spot x. It’s a reef break that’s very consistent and exposed to the swell, and the water temp’s sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. But let’s be real—the first few days are pretty ordinary with messy, cross-onshore winds, so don’t get too excited just yet.

Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off. That 8ft SW swell carries a ton of energy but it’s onshore and choppy, so just forget it. Monday the 24th morning might be worth a look if you’re desperate, with 10ft WSW swell dropping to 8ft in the arvo, but it’s still cross-shore and only marginal at best. Tuesday the 25th? Nah, fresh cross-shore winds and lumpy.

Wednesday the 26th is where it gets wild. We’ve got a massive 18ft WSW swell pushing in with a very long 18-second period, and energy going through the roof. The wind is light cross-onshore in the morning, but honestly, this is way too big for this reef—only for the absolute nutters. Don’t even think about it unless you’re an expert and know the place blindfolded. Thursday the 27th drops to a more manageable 12ft SW, but it’s still lumpy and cross-shore.

Friday the 28th morning starts to clean up with a moderate offshore from the SE, and 7ft SW swell at 12 seconds. It’s still marginal, but at least it looks clean. That’s a small window. Saturday the 29th morning is the first real standout—5ft SW swell with a long 16-second period and clean offshore ENE breeze at 12 mph. The water’s clean, the energy’s moderate, and it’ll be a nice session for experienced surfers.

Sunday the 30th through Tuesday the 3rd of September is patchy. Sunday morning has 10ft cross-shore and light air, so it’s okay but not amazing. Monday the 31st is back to onshore chop—skip it. But Tuesday the 1st of September morning is another beauty: 8ft WSW swell, 15-second period, light offshore breeze from the E, and clean conditions. That’s a good one for the more experienced crew.

Then we’ve got a few days of mediocrity until Friday the 5th of September. Friday morning sees 10ft SW swell with a moderate offshore breeze, clean, and solid energy. Saturday the 6th? Another big one—12ft WSW swell, 16-second period, clean offshore breeze. That’s a proper session, but get in early before it gets too big.

Sunday the 6th of September is another massive day—18ft WSW swell with 16-second period—but again, it’s too big for this spot unless you’re a gun. Light cross-shore wind, but seriously, it’s only for the experts.

Best on offer? I’d put Saturday the 29th of August morning right up there—clean offshore, 5ft SW, and that 16-second pulse will make for some nice lines. And Tuesday the 1st of September morning is another cracker, with 8ft and clean offshores. That’s the pick of the bunch for me. Expect a few other surfers around, it can get crowded here sometimes. Keep in mind, this reef can be a bit tricky with that long-period swell—it might wrap in a bit too straight for a beach break, but on a reef like this, it should hold up.

Rusty.
