The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Spot x.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands. The first few days are a write-off for any decent surf. Friday afternoon the 17th kicks off with a 6ft swell from the WSW, but a strong 25 km/h cross-offshore wind and a very marginal score for the conditions means it’s not worth suiting up. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 67°F.

Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th are a complete no-go. We’re looking at heavy onshore winds and 10ft to 16ft of messy, blown-out swell. The wave energy is moderate to strong (8768 and 3826), but the winds are howling onshore, making it a total mess. Definitely a weekend to watch from the beach.

Monday the 20th is still pretty grim with a 6ft to 8ft onshore slop and poor surf conditions. The wait continues.

But hold on, because Tuesday the 21st of July morning is where it starts to get interesting. The swell drops to a clean 8ft from the SW, and we get a sweet 15 km/h cross-offshore wind from the SE. The wave energy is strong (2534), and the rating for experienced surfers is excellent. This is the first real window of quality.

Wednesday the 22nd of July morning is the absolute standout of the first week. We’re looking at a 10ft SW groundswell with a 13-second period, and the wind is a perfect 5 km/h offshore from the NE. It’s clean, powerful, and the wave energy is very strong (3059). This is a serious session for experienced surfers only. The reef at Spot x will be handling this groundswell beautifully.

Thursday the 23rd of July morning keeps the good times rolling with an 8ft SW groundswell and a light cross-offshore breeze, scoring highly for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets even better – glassy conditions with a 8ft SW swell. That’s a magic window.

Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th see the quality drop back to marginal with cross-onshore winds and smaller, choppier surf. Still ridable, but not the pick of the week.

Sunday the 26th of July afternoon brings a big jump in size again – 11ft from the SW with a very long 17-second period. The wave energy is massive (6517), but the cross-shore wind is moderate. It’s a mixed bag; the long period will make it wall up at a beach break, but on a reef like Spot x, it could be a freight train.

Monday the 27th is blown out again with strong onshore winds and 11ft of messy swell. A rest day for sure.

Then we get a second wind. Tuesday the 28th of July morning is another absolute gem. Glassy conditions with an 8ft SW groundswell. The wave energy is strong (2190), and the conditions are perfect for experienced surfers. The afternoon stays clean with a light offshore.

The rest of the week into the start of August gets a bit wild. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th see strong winds and big, messy swells. The 1st of August is a monster – 23ft and 21ft from the WSW with very strong to extreme wave energy (21214 and 16851). That’s way too big for anyone but the most elite tow-in crew, and with cross-onshore winds, it’s looking more like a kitesurfing showcase than a paddling day.

The Best of the Bunch: The absolute standout is Wednesday the 22nd of July morning. A solid 10ft SW groundswell, clean offshore wind, and a very strong energy reading (3059). For experienced surfers on the reef, that’s as good as it gets. Tuesday the 28th of July morning is a very close second with glassy conditions and a solid 8ft swell.

Rusty out.
