The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break down the spot for you in feet and miles per hour.

The first week is a bit of a slow burner, but it builds into a couple of proper sessions. The water is sitting at 19°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a spring suit. The wind is the main enemy early on – Monday and Tuesday are a write-off with onshore and cross-onshore slop, messy and lumpy at 8ft to 8ft. Not worth paddling out for.

The real action kicks off on Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July. That’s the standout. We’ve got 12ft of SW groundswell rolling in with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is pumping at 4081 – that’s strong stuff. The wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze from the east at 9 mph, keeping the faces smooth. This is serious wave energy for experienced surfers only; anything over 8ft is for the crew who know what they’re doing. The reef at Spot x will be handling that long-period swell well, with proper shapes and set waves. Crowds are possible here, so get out early.

Thursday the 23rd of July holds up nicely too. The morning has 8ft of SW swell (energy 2236) with a clean 12 mph offshore wind from the ENE. That’s a glassy morning, clean and powerful. The afternoon drops to 7ft with a light cross-off breeze, still excellent conditions. Thursday is a top pick for the week.

Friday the 24th of July is smaller at 5ft, but the wind is light and cross-off, making it clean and fun for intermediates. The swell direction is still SW, periods around 12 seconds, so the waves will have some push. The weekend (Saturday, 25th July) is a bit of a letdown – the wind picks up to 16 mph and the swell drops off, making it harder to enjoy.

Now, Sunday the 26th of July is a mess. An 12ft to 16ft SW swell gets hammered by 22 mph onshore winds, turning it into lumpy, blown-out chaos. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. Monday the 27th is still big at 15ft, but the wind improves to a cross-off, so if you’re a ballsy charger, there might be something there, but it’s marginal.

The next real gem is Tuesday the 28th of July. Morning has 10ft of SW groundswell (energy 3517) with a 12 mph offshore wind from the ENE. That’s clean, powerful, and for experts. The afternoon is even better – 10ft, 14-second period, 9 mph offshore from the ENE, and the energy is 3099. The conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is a solid session.

Wednesday the 29th of July is still big at 8ft, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off, which makes it a bit of a battle. The swell period is a very long 17 seconds in the morning, which is classic for point breaks, but at a reef like Spot x, it’ll be walling up. The energy is still strong at 3312. It’s a good one if you can handle the wind.

After that, the forecast drops off. From Thursday the 30th of July right through to Saturday the 2nd of August, the swell gets small – 4ft to 5ft – and the wind gets strong, with near gale force on the 31st of July. Stay out of the water those days.

There’s a little bounce back on Sunday the 2nd and Monday the 3rd of August. Sunday morning has 5ft with a light cross-off breeze, clean and fun. Monday the 3rd of August morning has 6ft of SW swell, 13-second period, and a light offshore from the east. That’s a clean, wavable morning for intermediates. But Monday afternoon goes south with a 22 mph cross-on wind.

The very end of the run, Tuesday the 4th of August, is a huge 23ft swell, but it’s all cross-on wind. That’s not for surfing – that’s for watching from the cliff.

So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is Wednesday morning the 22nd and Tuesday the 28th of July. Both are clean, powerful, and for the experienced crew. The long-range stuff on the 28th of July is promising but less certain this far out. Get on it while it’s good.

Rusty.
