The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the shores of Spot X. We've got a bit of a weird one on the horizon, so let's break it down.

The next week and a half is a bit of a slow burn, with some real solid windows in there, but we gotta earn it. The water's sittin' around 67°, which is a shade warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a spring suit if you're tough enough.

Sunday and Monday are a write-off, mate. The wind's howling onshore, and the swell is a lumpy, messy 10ft to 7ft from the WSW. The wave energy is heavy, but it's all blown out. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.

Tuesday's a bit of a tease. The swell drops to 8ft from the SW, but the wind is cross-shore, making for a choppy surface. You'll find a few, but it's work.

Now, Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are the real standouts. Wednesday morning kicks off with a clean 10ft SW swell (wave energy 4053), and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the east. By the afternoon, it goes glassy, with an 12ft SW groundswell (wave energy 4491) and a period of 15 seconds. That's long-period groundswell, meaning it'll have some serious punch and long lulls between sets. This is a reef break, so it will handle that long period beautifully. This is for the experienced crew, as it's a solid size. Thursday keeps the good times rolling with a clean 8ft to 7ft SW swell and offshore winds. The quality is excellent.

Friday the 24th is a good option for a wider range of surfers. The swell drops to 5ft from the SW, and the wind is clean cross-offshore. It's more manageable, and the wave energy is moderate (835-889). You'll get some fun waves.

Saturday the 25th is a write-off again with a gale-force cross-offshore wind that will ruin the 4ft to 4ft swell.

Then we get a crazy run of huge, dangerous swell from the 26th of July through to the 3rd of August. The wind is a mess for most of it, but the swell size is just staggering. The 31st of July and 1st of August see a 21ft to 26ft WSW swell with wave energy readings over 11,000 and even 40,000. That's not for paddling; that's a tow-in scenario or a day to watch from the cliffs. The wind is offshore and clean on those days, but the swell is way too big for this break. Do not even think about it unless you're a pro.

The 28th and 29th of July offer a window of moderate 8ft to 7ft SW swell with clean offshore winds. This is a solid, powerful option with wave energy in the 2,000 range. A good second choice for the brave.

The 30th of July is interesting. The morning is a bit smaller, but the afternoon sees a 7ft WSW swell with a very long 18-second period pushing wave energy to 3004. The wind is a moderate offshore, so that reef will be firing with those long, grinding lines.

The 3rd of August is the end of the road, with a big 15ft SW swell and strong onshore winds. It's a mess.

So, to wrap it up: Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are your best bet for epic, clean, powerful surf. The 28th and 29th are a solid backup. The rest is either blown out, too big, or both.

Rusty.
