The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's going on at Spot X. We've got a reef break that's exposed to the swell, and it's very consistent, which is a good start. Water temp is sitting at about 66°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
The next couple of days are the clear standouts. Tuesday morning, July 14th, we're looking at a solid 10ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period. The combined energy is strong at (3813). The wind is light and offshore from the NE, so it’ll be clean and glassy. This is top-shelf stuff for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds similar quality, with 10ft SW swell and 14-second period, still with that clean offshore breeze. The energy drops a touch to (3326), but it’s still a ripper afternoon.
Wednesday the 15th gets more challenging. The swell is still decent at 7ft to 8ft from the SW, but the wind swings around to a strong cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, gusting up to 25 mph. It’ll be clean but bumpy, and the quality drops off. Thursday the 16th is a write-off with onshore winds making a mess of things.
We then hit a long stretch of poor conditions. From Friday the 17th right through to Wednesday the 22nd of July, it’s a mix of onshore winds and lumpy, choppy seas. Swell sizes jump around, with a big pulse of 18ft WSW swell on Saturday morning, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it unsurfable. The energy on that one is massive at (8770). For a reef break, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. This rough patch lasts about a week.
Things start to look promising again on the morning of Saturday, July 25th. The swell drops to a much more manageable 6ft from the SSW, with a 12-second period and only light NNE cross-offshore winds. Energy is moderate (1738). It’ll be clean. The afternoon is even better with 7ft from the west, a 13-second period, and glassy conditions. That's a serious good wave window.
Sunday the 26th offers average waves, with 8ft to 8ft from the west and moderate winds. Not a standout. The following week, starting Monday July 27th, the swell stays up but the period drops off, with strong cross-shore winds making it messy. Don't get too excited.
Tuesday the 28th has bigger 13ft to 15ft SW swell, but with a short period and cross-shore winds, it’s not going to be pretty. For the best of the second week, keep your eyes on Wednesday morning, July 29th. We've got a clean 12ft SW groundswell with a 12-second period, light offshore winds from the east, and strong energy (4625). That's the one to circle on your calendar. It’s a longer-range call, so be ready for it.
Stay safe out there. - Rusty
