The Lowdown

Right then, let's have a look at what's on the cards for Spot x. It's a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, with a slow start and then a proper pulse of energy later on.

We're kicking off with a big, lumpy mess on Saturday the 18th. That 16ft swell from the WSW is carrying a massive amount of energy (11650), but with a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind, it's going to be blown out and ugly. Not one to bother with. Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 21st is a write-off too—the swell drops a bit, but the winds are all over the place, keeping things choppy and marginal at best. Just a flat, frustrating run there.

Now, Wednesday the 22nd is where it starts to get interesting. That morning we've got a clean 10ft SW groundswell, a long 13-second period, and, get this, an offshore ENE breeze at just 3 mph. That's going to be clean, powerful, and for the experienced crew, it's going to be a proper standout session. The energy is strong (3509), and those conditions are about as good as it gets for a solid reef wave. Be aware, it's a very consistent spot, and crowds are sometimes a factor here, so don't expect to have it to yourself.

The rest of the week stays rideable, with the 23rd and 24th offering smaller but still clean waves in the 7ft to 8ft range, a good option if Wednesday's a bit much. Then we hit another big gap with poor conditions from the 25th to the 27th as a strong westerly flow and some hefty swell (up to 13ft on the Sunday) just gets messy again. That 26th is a total no-go—25 mph winds and a churning 13ft sea; that's kite-surfing territory, not paddle-surfing.

We get a brief reprieve on Tuesday the 28th with a glassy morning and a fun 8ft SW swell, but the real magic is brewing for the start of August. The 1st of August is the absolute standout of the whole outlook. We're looking at a massive 18ft WSW groundswell on Saturday morning with a light offshore, and then 16ft on Saturday afternoon with a glassy surface. The energy readings are off the charts (14375 and 13167). This is a serious, expert-only groundswell with a very long 16-second period—it's going to be a freight train, and it'll be lining up perfectly at this reef. This is the one to circle on your calendar, but it's for the brave and the skilled only. The following Sunday the 2nd still has big 13ft waves and clean conditions, so that run from the 1st to the 2nd is the pay-off for the whole quiet spell.

So to wrap it up: a slow and frustrating first week, a few decent clean windows in the middle, and then a massive, world-class swell event hitting right at the start of August. Don't sleep on that date.

Rusty.
