The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a proper look at what Spotx has on offer for us over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s some real gold buried in there if you’re willing to wait for it.
Right now, we’re looking at a solid, powerful swell train rolling in from the WSW, but the wind is a total mess. We’ve got a big, lumpy, and choppy start to the period. The ocean is throwing around a massive amount of energy – we’re talking over 4000 (moderate to strong wave energy) on Thursday, and it actually climbs to over 10,000 (strong to very strong wave energy) by Saturday, but the onshore winds are just ruining it. It’s a write-off for a clean paddle. This is a reef setup, so when it’s like this, the surface is just too rough.
There’s a long gap of poor conditions from Thursday, the 16th, right through the weekend and into Monday the 20th. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or straight onshore, which is no good for a clean wave face. Don’t even think about it until the pattern changes.
The real standout is going to be Tuesday, the 21st of July. The wind finally swings around to the ESE, giving us a clean, gentle cross-offshore breeze. The swell is holding at a solid 8ft from the southwest, with a nice 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy (2862 - moderate to strong wave energy). The waves will have real shape and power, but at this size, it’s really for the experienced crew. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. This is the day to circle.
Then, Wednesday the 22nd is another cracker. The wind goes light out of the NNE, keeping it clean with a cross-offshore flow. Same solid 8ft of SW groundswell. It’s another excellent window for the guys who know what they’re doing.
We get a couple of smaller, clean days toward the end of that week, but the next absolute standout is much further out. Mark your calendars for Wednesday the 29th of July. The forecast is showing an exceptional pulse of long-period WSW groundswell hitting 12ft, with a 14-second period, and the wind is offshore from the east. The combined energy reading is over 6400 (strong to very strong wave energy). This is a serious, powerful, clean swell. It’s going to be heavy, expert-only territory, but if you can handle it, it will be session of the year stuff. That’s still a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but it looks promising.
There’s also a glassy, absolutely pumping 16ft swell forecast for the very end of the month on the 31st, but again, that’s a long-range call and huge for anyone but the most experienced.
So, to wrap it up: this week is a bust. Wait for Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd for the first good taste. The real, jaw-dropping potential is on the 29th, if the forecast holds.
Rusty.
