The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it for Spot x. It's a reef break, very consistent, open to the swell, and it works best when the swell comes from the WSW. Water temp's about 67°, a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nothin' wild, just a little extra warmth.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th? Forget it. We've got a massive 18-foot swell on Saturday but the wind's howlin' onshore at 25 mph. That's a no-go. The energy's huge, but it's all chopped up. Sunday's a bit smaller at 10-foot but still cross-onshore and messy.
Monday the 20th is still rough.
Now, Wednesday the 22nd is the one. A clean 10-foot SW swell with a 14-second period – that's long-period groundswell – and the wind goes glassy in the afternoon. That's as good as it gets. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The energy is strong, the waves will be powerful, and there'll be long waits between sets. Crowds are possible, so plan accordingly.
Thursday the 23rd is clean too with offshore wind, but it's a bit smaller.
Saturday the 25th drops off to 5-foot and cross-onshore. Not worth it.
Now mark your calendar for Sunday the 26th. We've got a 12-foot SW swell with a 17-second period – that's very long period groundswell, massive energy (6866). Wind's cross-offshore and light. This is exceptional for experts. One week out, so it's a promise but not a guarantee – but if it holds, it'll be the best session of the forecast.
Monday the 27th is still clean with offshore wind and a 10-foot swell.
After that, it gets smaller and more marginal. Wednesday the 30th has a 13-foot SW swell but with cross-shore wind and lumpy conditions – that's more for the brave or the kite surfers.
The final days – August 1st and 2nd – are small and clean but nothin' to get excited about.
So, for the experienced crew: Wednesday the 22nd for glassy clean waves, and Sunday the 26th for the big, powerful swell. Beginners should stay away from anything over 5-foot, and that's most of this forecast.
Rusty.
