The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming up at Spot x. This is a reef setup, so we're talking about a wave that needs the right swell direction to really fire, and it looks like we've got a solid run of energy from the west-southwest on the horizon. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might be able to get away with a slightly thinner suit.

The first few days are a bit of a write-off, honestly. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th see some serious size – swells around 15 ft – but the wind is all wrong, mostly cross-onshore, making things choppy and messy. The wave energy is massive (10173 on Tuesday morning), but it's just not clean. Thursday the 20th is a bit smaller, around 12 ft to 13 ft, and still marginal.

Then things start to get interesting. Friday the 21st is where you want to be. The morning is looking glassy, with a light 3 mph offshore wind from the southeast. The swell is a powerful 12 ft from the west-southwest, with a long 15-second period. That's a proper groundswell pushing in with 5166 units of energy. For a reef, that long period is going to mean some proper, well-shaped waves. It's big enough to be for the experienced crew only, but if you're comfortable in that size, this is the standout of the whole run.

The rest of that week and into the next is a mix of onshore winds and choppy conditions, with a lot of poor to marginal surf. The swell drops a bit, but the wind doesn't play ball until the 24th, when we get a bit of a cleaner cross-offshore breeze on a 8 ft swell. The energy is a lot lower by then (2222).

There's a nasty stormy spell from the 25th to the 28th. Strong winds, near gale-force at times, and rain. The swell is all over the place, but it's just not surfable. The wave energy spikes again, but it's all wind and chop.

The very end of the run, heading into the 29th and 30th, shows some promise. The wind drops back to light breezes, and we see a 8 ft to 10 ft west-southwest swell with a 15 to 16-second period. The Saturday morning of the 29th looks the pick of that late period, with a light cross-onshore wind and moderate energy (3597). It's still marginal, but cleaner than what we've seen.

That first week of September (the 1st and 2nd) has a similar story: 10 ft to 12 ft west-southwest swell, but with a shorter period around 13 to 14 seconds and a bit of cross-shore wind. It's surfable, but not the best.

Overall, the clear winner is Friday morning, the 21st of August. Glassy conditions, a solid 12 ft west-southwest groundswell, and that long period for a reef. Get on it.

Rusty.
