The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's get into it.

We’ve got a solid window of swell on the cards for Spot x, but it’s a tale of two halves. The big news is a powerful, long-period SW groundswell that’s going to be pulsing through, but the wind is going to be our biggest enemy for most of the run. Hang tight.

The first real action kicks off Tuesday, the 14th of July. We’re looking at a clean 10ft SW swell (15-second period) with a gentle NE offshore breeze. The water’s sitting at 66°, which is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is very strong (3970), but don’t let the numbers fool you—this is a big, powerful swell. At over 8ft, this is strictly for the experienced crew. That long period, over 15 seconds, means it’s going to be a proper groundswell. At a reef break like Spot x, that’s a beautiful thing—better shaped waves, more energy, and longer lulls between sets for getting back out. The morning session is the standout here.

Wednesday the 15th sees the swell drop a touch, but the wind swings to a strong NNE, blowing 25 mph cross-offshore. It’s still clean, but that wind is howling, making it a battle. Thursday morning the 16th is a write-off with a 12ft WSW swell and a cross-shore wind bringing rain. Stay home. However, Thursday afternoon is a weird one. The wind goes glassy, calm, but the swell is still a solid 10ft from the WSW with a 14-second period. That’s a big, clean wave for the experts. You’ll be sharing it with the rain showers, but it’ll be empty.

Friday through Sunday, the 17th to the 19th, is a rough stretch. Onshore winds, lumpy conditions, and a building swell that peaks Saturday the 18th with a massive 18ft WSW swell. The energy readings are off the charts (10838 on Saturday morning), but the onshore gale-force winds turn it into a complete washing machine. This is kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.

We get a bit of a lull early next week, with onshore cross-onshore winds and messy surf from the 20th to the 23rd of July. Nothing to write home about.

Now, keep your eyes on Friday the 24th of July. The forecast is showing a 13ft W swell with a 13-second period and a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the N. The energy is very strong (7838), and the wind is clean. This is a promising one. The swell is in the expert-only range, but if the wind holds, Spot x will be firing.

Then, the real standout is sitting right at the end of the forecast window. Tuesday the 28th of July afternoon shows a solid 12ft SW swell, 14-second period, with a light N cross-offshore breeze. That’s a beautiful combo for this reef. But the real prize is Wednesday the 29th of July. We’re looking at an exceptional day. A 13ft to 15ft SW groundswell (16-17 second period) with light, offshore winds in the morning, going glassy by the afternoon. The energy is maxed out (9358 to 10077). This is as good as it gets for expert surfers at Spot x. It’s 10 days out, so keep an eye on it, but it’s got the potential to be the session of the month.

Rusty.
