The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Spot x over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of southern hemi groundswell lining up, but the wind is going to be the main character in this story. The water is sitting at a warm 66°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick steamer at home.
The best bet on offer is Friday morning, 21 August. The swell is 12 ft from the SW with a very long 14-second period, and the combined swell energy is pumping at a strong 4862. The absolute kicker? Glassy conditions, zero wind. That’s a major positive. This is a reef break, so that long-period groundswell will really line up and offer some proper, powerful waves. It’s a standout for experienced surfers, and with the wind like that, it’ll be clean. Keep in mind, this spot is very consistent, so you know it’ll be working.
Monday morning, 24 August, is another good call. The swell is 10 ft from the SW (13-second period, 2929 combined energy), with a light, clean cross-offshore breeze from the NNE. It won’t be quite as perfect as Friday, but it’ll be a damn sight better than the rest of the week. That cross-off will keep the faces nice and tidy.
Looking further ahead, Monday, 31 August is a promising one but it’s a long way off, so don’t bank on it yet. The forecast shows a 13 ft WSW swell with a 14-second period and a strong 7259 combined energy. The wind is looking clean and cross-offshore from the NNE again. If that holds, it’ll be a serious session for those who can handle it.
Now, for the rest of the run, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The first few days have some decent swell, but a lot of it is marred by cross-on or onshore winds. Thursday afternoon, 20 August, the swell is 12 ft from the WSW, but it’s a cross-on breeze and a bit choppy, so it’s only marginal.
Saturday morning, 29 August, has a 5 ft swell from the WSW with a very long 20-second period and a good 3040 combined energy, and the wind is onshore. That’s a shame because that long period would be magic at the reef if it wasn’t blown out.
There’s a big gap of poor conditions from Tuesday afternoon, 25 August through to Sunday morning, 30 August, with messy, strong winds and a lot of rain. The swell is still there, but it’s ugly. On Wednesday, 26 August, the combined energy hits a massive 10682 with a 15 ft WSW swell, but it’s a messy cross-on. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddler’s dream.
For the later part of the second week, Tuesday, 1 September has a 13 ft WSW swell with a 13-second period and a strong 6091 combined energy, and the wind is cross-offshore from the North. That’s a solid option if the conditions hold, but it’s over a week out, so stay tuned.
Rusty.
