The Lowdown

Right, mate. Rusty here, checking in on Spot X. Looking at the next couple weeks, there's a whole lot of juice coming through, but the wind is going to be the story. It'll be a mixed bag.

The action starts on Thursday afternoon, August 20th, but the conditions are ugly. There's a solid 12ft swell from the WSW, with a very long 16 second period. The cross-onshore wind has it all chopped up. The wave energy is huge at 6308, you can feel the power, but the surface is a mess.

The standout window is Friday morning, August 21st. The swell drops a bit to 12ft, still from the SW, with a 14 second period. It's a proper groundswell. But the real winner is the wind. It goes glassy, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE at only 3 mph. The water temp is 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so it feels good. This is the cleanest, best session of the whole outlook.

Friday afternoon the wind swings back to a cross-onshore, and the magic is gone. Saturday and Sunday are a write-off with moderate, choppy winds and the same sized swell.

We get a little break on Monday morning, August 24th. The wind turns light and cross-offshore from the north at 6 mph, cleaning up a 10ft WSW swell with a 13 second period. The energy is still solid at 2820. It'll be a fantastic session for experienced surfers. Monday afternoon is okay, just a bit of cross-shore chop.

The next few days are a mix of moderate winds and messy conditions, though the swell stays between 7ft and 10ft. The consistency is there, but the quality is not.

The real heavy stuff arrives on Wednesday morning, August 26th. A massive 18ft swell from the WSW, with a very long 19 second period, is going to hammer the reef. The combined energy is an incredible 18892. This is for experts only. The wind is cross-onshore, but the size makes it a serious, critical session. The same goes for Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday.

The swell drops from Friday, August 28th, but conditions remain mostly messy with cross-shore winds and moderate breezes. It's not worth paddling out for.

The last decent chance is on Saturday morning, August 29th. The swell drops to 5ft from the WSW with a 12 second period, and we get a beautiful offshore wind from the NE at 6 mph. It's clean, small, and perfect for a longboard. The energy is low at 1248, but the quality is excellent.

From August 30th through to September 4th, it's a long stretch of poor conditions. The swell hangs around between 7ft and 13ft, but the wind is constantly cross-onshore or onshore, making for a choppy, lumpy mess. Not a single good session in that run.

So here's the game plan: The absolute highlight is Friday morning, August 21st, for the clean, glassy 12ft groundswell. Monday morning, August 24th, is a solid second choice for the experienced crew. And Saturday morning, August 29th, is your small, clean day.

Rusty.
