The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got the outlook for Grunters right here. Let’s get into it.
We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but it’s a bit of a slow burner. The first few days are messy, with wind and swell not lining up, but if you’re patient, there’s a couple of real gems hidden in there. The best of the lot look to be Monday the 14th and then a promising run later in the period.
Right now, starting out, there’s a 7 ft swell from the WSW on Thursday afternoon, period a long 15 seconds, but the wind is a cross-shore from the NNW at 9 mph. The water is 64°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate to strong (2109), but the forecast is marginal. It’s not a great start. Friday the 11th brings a bit more size, 7 ft to 10 ft from the WSW, and the wind turns cross-offshore from the NNE and then N, staying clean. The energy ramps up huge (3576 to 4741), but the call is still marginal. The wind is good, but it feels like it’s just not quite right at this spot.
Saturday and Sunday the 12th and 13th are a write-off. Strong onshore and cross-onshore winds from the W and WNW, with swell pumping 10 ft to 12 ft, but it’s all ugly. Choppy, blown out. Not worth paddling out for.
Then we get to Monday the 14th. This is the standout. Early morning, a 13 ft SW groundswell, period 14 seconds, and the wind is light from the E, cross-offshore at 6 mph. The energy is very strong (6336), and the conditions are described as exceptional for experts. This is big, powerful surf. Over 8 ft, so this is expert territory only. It gets a bit bigger later, but the wind shifts. Still, the morning window is the one to circle. The swell direction matches the optimum WSW perfectly.
The rest of the week is a mixed bag. Tuesday the 15th drops to 12 ft, but the wind turns cross-shore and bumps it up. Wednesday the 16th has a 8 ft SW swell with clean cross-offshore wind from the N in the morning, good for experienced surfers but not the standout. The period is 16 seconds, a very long groundswell, so it will be better at the reef than a beach break. Crowds are possible here sometimes, so get in early.
The end of the first week and into the second gets messy again. Strong NW winds on Thursday the 17th, lumpy. Then a 5 ft to 6 ft SW swell on Friday the 18th with rain and onshore wind. Poor conditions.
The second week kicks off with a big one on Monday the 21st. A 15 ft WSW swell, period 16 seconds, and the energy is massive (8972). The wind is onshore, though, so the morning session is marginal. Monday afternoon turns into a 16 ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-onshore, and it’s a total washout. Tuesday the 22nd is the biggest of the whole run, 20 ft to 18 ft, with strong SSW winds. That’s a no-go for paddle surfing; that setup is more for the kite crew.
The real second-week standout is Thursday the 24th. Morning session, 12 ft SW swell, period 15 seconds, and the wind is offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. Glassy conditions, clean. The energy is very strong (5006), and it’s called exceptional for experts. The swell direction is a perfect match. This is the one to aim for. It’s a long-range call, so it’s promising but not locked in.
Friday the 25th also looks good, with 12 ft SW swell and cross-offshore NNE wind, clean, but not quite as clean as Thursday.
So, overall, the best on offer is the Monday the 14th morning session and the Thursday the 24th morning session. Both are big, powerful, and clean. For the average surfer, the 8 ft Wednesday the 16th morning is a solid option. The rest of the 16 days is either too windy, too big, or too messy to be a true standout.
