The Lowdown

G’day, this is Rusty. We’ve got a bit of a tricky run ahead here at Lighthouse. The opening days are a write-off – big, messy swells with howling cross-onshore winds making it a real chore, not a surf. A solid West South West groundswell is pumping in, but the wind is just trashing it. It’s not until Monday the 7th that things start to clean up, and even then it’s only just becoming something you’d paddle out for.

Let’s talk about the best of it. Tuesday the 8th is looking like the standout. The morning is clean, with a West South West swell running at 10.0ft, pushed by an offshore East North East breeze. The swell period is 17 seconds, so it’s a proper long period groundswell – heaps of energy – but at that size and period, this is for experienced surfers only. The afternoon is even better: lighter winds, still offshore, with clean conditions and the same 10.0ft swell. That’s the window to circle.

Another good option comes on Friday the 11th. The swell backs off a touch to 6.9ft, but it’s got an 18-second period, the wind is light and cross-offshore, and the energy is still solid. Expect clean, well-shaped waves again for experienced surfers. After that, things go to crap again on the 12th and 13th with a strong gale and onshore wind, pushing 15.0ft to 16.0ft swells – that’s only for the kamikaze crew.

The second week starts to shape up again. Tuesday the 15th morning has clean 7.9ft surf from the WSW with light offshore wind, but the wind turns on you by the afternoon. Thursday the 17th is another one to keep an eye on in the morning: 8.2ft at 17 seconds and clean. Just be aware that a long period swell like this at a break described as beach and reef can sometimes close out at the beach sections – it’ll be best on the reef.

Overall, it’s a stop-start period. Best bets are Tuesday the 8th and Friday the 11th for experienced surfers looking for clean, powerful waves. Beginners should sit this one out until things drop below 5.0ft and the wind lays flat.
