Hey folks, Rusty here, talking about the surf coming up.
We’ve got a solid run of waves at Hideaways (Mentawi Islands) starting Saturday, July 4th. It kicks off with clean, cross-off conditions and a waist-to-chest high SW groundswell, period around 14 seconds. The water temp is 86°, about average for the time of year—nothing unusual. Saturday morning is the better part of the day, with that clean 3ft swell and light breeze. The afternoon drops off a touch.
Sunday the 5th is small and not really worth paddling out for, with a glassy but weak 1ft morning and only slightly better 2ft in the afternoon. Better to wait.
Monday the 6th morning brings a real pick-up: 3ft from the SSW, period 16 seconds, glassy, and the energy jumps to moderate (412). That’s a nice little window. The afternoon stays clean but the wind shifts cross-off and the energy climbs to a moderate 502 with 3ft.
Tuesday the 7th morning is a standout. We’ve got 4ft of SSW swell, period 16 seconds, with light cross-off wind. The combined energy is a solid 674—moderate but building. The water’s still clean, the waves have shape, and it’s not too big. Conditions are very good. The afternoon gets a bit trickier with a cross-chop as the wind picks up, but the morning session is the pick of the early week.
Wednesday the 8th holds the biggest swell of the period so far: 6ft from the SSW, 15-second period. The morning is sketchy and onshore, but Wednesday afternoon is an absolute gem for experienced surfers. Glassy, calm wind, and that 6ft groundswell hitting the reef? That’s a serious session. The energy is very strong at 1452. This is a true standout for the confident crew. The long period means it’ll have some serious push, but it’s best suited to this reef setup.
Thursday the 9th keeps it pumping with 5–6ft SSW swell, clean, and offshore winds by the afternoon. Energy stays high (1043 to 1210). Another very good stretch.
Friday the 10th is a classic offshore day—clean, 4–6ft SSW, 15-second period, and moderate to strong energy (960–1222). Very good conditions all day.
The swell slowly eases over the weekend of the 11th and 12th, but remains surfable with clean offshore conditions and 3–5ft. The energy drops back to moderate and then weak by Sunday. Still worth a paddle if you’ve got the itch.
Monday the 13th through Wednesday the 15th sees a lull in size—mostly 2–4ft—but the wind stays favourable, and by Tuesday the 14th the period lengthens to 17 seconds and energy jumps to 824. That’s a sneaky good session for patient surfers.
Another absolute standout arrives on Thursday the 16th afternoon. Glassy calm, 5ft SW groundswell, 16-second period, and very strong energy at 1401. This is for experienced surfers only—big, clean, powerful reef waves. Crowds are often a factor here, and with conditions this good, expect company.
Friday the 17th carries that energy through with 5ft SW, glassy in the morning, and very good conditions all day.
The run fades into the second week with consistent 4–5ft SW swells, clean conditions, and moderate energy through Saturday the 18th. Sunday the 19th is still fun but smaller and lighter.
Overall, Hideaways is firing across this whole stretch. The standouts are Wednesday afternoon July 8th and Thursday afternoon July 16th for the biggest, cleanest, most powerful waves. Tuesday morning the 7th and Friday the 10th are your best bets if you want good shape without the size getting too serious.
Rusty.
