The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s heading our way for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got one spot on the radar, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag of a reef setup that’s going to need the right timing to make it worthwhile.
The first real chance to get wet starts on Monday the 24th of August, but honestly, that opening is a bit of a tough sell. We’re looking at chest-high swell around 6ft from the SSW, with a long period of 17 seconds that’s packed with energy (1750). The problem is the wind is on it, and there are risk of thunderstorms in the air. The water is about average for this time of year. It’s surfable if you’re desperate, but not the cleanest start.
The real standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Thursday the 27th of August. The morning session at Hiliduha is looking like the pick of the whole forecast. The swell drops to a clean 3ft from the SW, but paired with a deep, long-period groundswell of 19 seconds and a massive energy reading (1490). More importantly, the wind goes totally glassy, dead calm, with zero wind. The report says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." That’s a rare call. This is a highly recommended morning for anyone who knows their way around a reef. The wave quality will be superb, and the crowd situation is "sometimes" busy, so you might have a few others in the water, but the trade-off is well worth it for a session like that.
Wednesday the 26th of August is worth a mention too. The morning brings a 5ft SW swell with a 13-second period (780 energy) and glassy conditions. The wind is light and variable, making for a clean surface. It’s a solid option, but the Thursday morning has the edge for sheer quality.
The second week gets a bit more interesting as we head into September. Thursday the 3rd of September morning is another strong candidate. Clean, glassy conditions again with a 5ft SW swell from the SW and a 15-second period (1044 energy). The call is for "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." That’s a promising long-range look, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on the forecast.
Overall, don’t get too excited about the first few days. The wind is messy, and the swell is a bit raw. But if you can hold out for the 27th of August, you’ll be rewarded. The reef at Hiliduha is exposed to the SW, and it’s fairly consistent, so it will be working. For the experts, the morning of the 27th is the clear winner. For the rest of the time, you’ll be picking through some marginal conditions.
Stay sharp, keep an eye on the sky for those thunderstorms, and don’t be afraid to wait for the glass.
Rusty.
