The Lowdown
Righto, let’s look at what HiIiduha is serving up. This is a proper exposed reef break, advanced only, and it’s fairly consistent. We’ve got a long run of strong south-west groundswell, with periods hanging in the 15 to 18 second range – that’s long-period energy, meaning powerful, well-shaped waves with longer waits between sets. The combined energy numbers are huge, starting in the 2000s and climbing past 4000 at the peak, so that’s strong to very strong wave energy.
Water temp is about average for the season, nothing wild.
Tuesday the 18th is a dud – onshore wind, marginal, just leave it. The first real standout is Wednesday morning the 19th. Glassy calm, 0 mph wind, a 2.4m (8 ft) south-west swell with an 18-second period, and energy pumping at 3773. That’s excellent for experienced surfers – clean, powerful, long-period groundswell hitting an exposed reef. Crowds are possible here. Get in early.
Wednesday afternoon the wind switches to cross-on, swell bumps to 2.5m (8 ft), but it gets messier. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st stay in that 2.0m to 2.5m (7 to 8 ft) range but with cross-on breezes – not the clean gem Wednesday morning was.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd go straight onshore, 1.6m to 2.1m (5 to 7 ft) of slop. Skip it.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are still marginal, light cross-on, swell dropping to 1.3m–1.8m (4 to 6 ft). Not worth a special trip.
Then we get another beauty. Wednesday morning the 26th is glassy with a 1.4m (5 ft) south-west swell, 13-second period, energy at 785 – smaller but clean, very good conditions. A solid sneaky session.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are nothing special – glassy but small.
Now for the second week. Saturday the 29th, Saturday morning, is a standout. Glassy, zero wind, a 1.4m (5 ft) south-west swell with a 19-second period – that’s a very long-period groundswell – energy jumps to 1771. Excellent for experienced surfers. Then Sunday the 30th morning is glassy again, 2.0m (7 ft), 17-second period, energy 2157 – another corker.
Monday the 31st morning holds glassy, 2.0m (7 ft), energy 2952. Then into September, Tuesday the 1st afternoon is glassy with 2.4m (8 ft) and 3005 energy – excellent. Wednesday the 2nd morning also glassy with 2.4m (8 ft), 17-second period, and the highest energy of the whole forecast at 4065. That’s massive.
The absolute best? Wednesday morning the 19th of August, and Saturday morning the 29th of August – both glassy, both powerful, long-period groundswell on an exposed reef. Crowds are possible. Paddle out early.
