Alright, this is gonna be a tough one to call, folks. Rusty here, and I've got to be straight with you – looking at the next sixteen days out of Withernsea, it's a pretty bleak picture. We're staring down the barrel of a good long stretch with basically nothing rideable on the cards. The first real chance of anything even worth a second look doesn't pop up until we're well into the second week.
From now, right through to the 18th of July, it's flat and frustrated. The swell is tiny—we're talking 0.7 ft to 2 ft waves with weak energy, rarely breaking above 30 (combined energy of all swells directed here) – and the wind is doing us no favours. It's mostly cross-off or straight onshore, making a mess of an already depressing situation. We're basically in a surf drought here, and for this area, a long blank run like this isn't unheard of.
Now, the 18th of July shows a bit of a pulse. That Saturday morning we finally see a bump to 2 ft from the north, but with a short period of 7 seconds, it’s not got any punch. The energy climbs a bit to 32 in the morning (combined energy of all swells directed here) but by the afternoon, a fresh breeze from the southeast kicks in at 19 mph and that cross-shore wind chops it all up. To be honest, the setup on that day looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. It's just not worth the paddle for us.
Then we roll into the 19th and 20th of July. On the 19th, we get a cleaner look with a light breeze and some cross-off wind, but the swell is still only 2 ft. It's tiny, but at least there might be a few crumbly little rollers for a longboard if you’re desperate. The real standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 20th of July. We see a southwesterly offshore wind at 12 mph, and the swell holds at 2 ft from the north-northeast with a period of 7 seconds. The energy is moderate at 38 (combined energy of all swells directed here). It’s the cleanest we’ll see it, with a moderate offshore breeze grooming the surface. It’ll be small and inconsistent, but for a patient soul on a big board, it could be the only window of the whole outlook. Just don't expect anything with any power.
So, my advice? Keep the board in the car for the 20th of July, but keep your expectations on the floor until then. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s looking like a whole lot of nothing.
