The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Withernsea area over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a tough watch. The whole sixteen-day window is a real struggle. There’s nothing here that I can put my weight behind as a proper surf session. It’s a long, blank run, which I suppose is more normal for this stretch of coast when the angles and winds don’t align.
The first proper mention of any surf comes on Sunday the 23rd of August. We’ve got a weak little swell rolling in from the NNE, around 4 ft, with a short period of 8 seconds. The morning is the only time to even look at the water because the wind goes glassy, with a light SSW breeze. That’s a massive positive in terms of clean surface, but the energy is weak – only 167 on the combined energy scale. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. By the afternoon, the wind swings E and goes cross-on, chopping it straight back up.
After that, it’s a downward slide. We see a tiny spike in energy on that Monday the 1st of September, pushing up to 492, with a 6 ft north swell. But it’s a total write-off. The onshore north wind is blowing at 16 mph, making it a choppy, cross-onshore mess. The wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine.
We get a few clean windows towards the end of the period, like Sunday the 6th of September, but the swell is a pathetic 1.0 ft. Even with a 12-second period, there’s nothing to push a surfer along. The water temperature here is sitting at about 65°, which is a notable 5° warmer than normal for this time of year, so the water’s warm, but that’s about the only positive.
Look, there are no standout days here. If you’re desperate to get wet, the only faint possibility is Sunday the 23rd morning for a paddle on the small, glassy waves. Otherwise, save the drive and the fuel, because the forecast is a dead loss for the foreseeable future.
Rusty.
