The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, let's get into it. Rusty here. I've got the skinny on the local scene for us, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough read for the next week or so.
We're looking at Staithes, a reef setup that's pretty exposed to the north. It's a spot that's inconsistent and can get crowded, and right now, we're in a real lull. The water's sitting at 61°, which is a touch warmer than we'd normally expect for this time of year, so that's a nice little bonus if you're in a wetsuit.
Now, for the bad news. From Friday the 21st right through until the end of August, the surf is basically non-existent. We're talking days of weak, messy wind and tiny swell. The combined energy is a joke, sitting in the double digits – that's 38 or less. It's all onshore and choppy, or just flat. There's nothing to even get excited about.
We do have a few days at the very end of August, from the 28th to the 29th, where we get a whisper of a clean-up. The wind goes light offshore or cross-offshore, and the swell is a tiny 2ft to 3ft from the northeast, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is still weak, around 63 to 120, and the score is a 1/10. It's surfable, but only just. You'll be on a longboard, and it's very ordinary.
Then we hit another flat spell from the 30th of August through to the 3rd of September. Just nothing.
But hold on to your boards, because things are about to get interesting. The real action, and the only standout here, is a powerful pulse of swell hitting on the 4th and 5th of September. On Thursday the 3rd, we see the energy jump to 714, and by Friday the 4th it's a massive 1148 – that's a serious amount of energy in the water. We're looking at a 10ft to 10ft swell from the north, with a 8-second period on the 3rd, building to a 8ft to 10ft north swell with a period of 8 to 9 seconds on the 4th and 5th. The wind is looking clean, with a light offshore breeze on Friday afternoon and a light cross-offshore on Saturday morning. This is for the true experts only – 10ft surf is no joke, and it's going to be powerful. The forecast is a 3/10 score, which is the best we've seen in the entire 16-day window. This is the one to circle on your calendar. It's a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but it's definitely promising.
So, the bottom line: the next week and a half is a write-off. The only real hope is that big north swell in the first week of September. Keep your fingers crossed.
Rusty out.
