Mushrooms Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s cut to it – the next 16 days at Mushrooms are a test of patience. This is an advanced reef break, exposed and usually consistent, but the first week is mostly a washout. The good stuff is hiding in the second week, so don’t get discouraged.

The outlook starts on Monday, August 17th, but it’s ugly. We’ve got a 5ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period and strong energy (1901). Problem is the wind is screaming from the SE at 25 mph, cross-shore and messy. This reef will be a mess of cross-chop. Tuesday the 18th is worse: 10ft S swell, 10-second period, energy through the roof (3308), and that 22–25 mph cross-shore wind just ruins it. Wednesday the 19th is still 8ft with strong wind. Honestly, if you’ve got a kite, this is more your playground than a surfboard.

Thursday the 20th shows a tiny break – swell drops to 5ft from the SE, 9-second period, energy down to moderate (857). Wind eases to 12 mph from the ESE, cross-offshore, and it’s clean. That’s a marginal call – maybe a sneaky session, but nothing special. Friday through Sunday (21st to 23rd of August) is small – 3ft to 5ft SE swell, light to moderate cross-shore winds, energy dropping as low as 160. Not worth the paddle.

Monday the 24th of August sees a tiny 2ft SSW groundswell with a very long 19-second period, but it’s weak (296) and cross-shore. Skip it.

Now, Tuesday the 25th of August is the first standout. Morning session: 4ft SSW swell, very long 15-second period, and the wind goes glassy – NE at 3 mph. That’s dead calm. Energy is moderate (964), and the wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” This reef will love that long-period groundswell – it’ll wrap in with shape. Crowds are possible though. The morning is the real winner.

Wednesday the 26th of August keeps it going: 7ft SSW swell, 16-second period, strong energy (1919). Wind is light SE at 3 mph, just a slight ripple. Clean enough for a ripper session.

But Thursday the 27th of August is the standout of the whole run. Morning: 7ft SSW, 15-second period, and the wind is SW at 3 mph – straight offshore. That’s perfect for a reef. Energy is strong at 1872. The afternoon gets even bigger – 8ft SSW, 14-second period, energy cranked to 2541. The catch? The forecast says it might be too big for this break – expert territory only. If you’ve got the nerve, this is it.

Friday the 28th of August morning still has 8ft S swell, 13-second period, energy 2454, with a light W wind cross-onshore. Also flagged as possibly too big. Afternoon the wind picks up and it turns poor.

From Saturday the 29th through to Tuesday the 1st of September, the swell fades back to 4ft to 6ft SE/SSE, with periods from 10 to 13 seconds, and moderate to fresh cross-shore winds. Some mornings might be okay, but nothing worth planning around.

Bottom line: first week is a bust unless you kite. The real action starts Tuesday morning, August 25th, with glassy 4ft SSW groundswell – that’s your cleanest bet. For size and power, Thursday morning, August 27th, offers 7ft with offshore wind, but it’s experts only. Crowds are a possibility, but on those days, it’ll be worth it.
