The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at your local stretch here. Let’s get into it.
First off, Pippi Beach is the only game in town for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, the start of the outlook is pretty flat and ordinary. We’ve got a long gap of nothing special until we finally see something worth getting wet for.
You’ll want to sleep in for the first few days. The wave energy is weak, with readings well under 100 (117) and conditions are just, well, meh. Tuesday morning the 4th of August has a bit of waist-high swell, 3ft from the SE, but it’s inconsistent and the wind is light offshore from the WNW, so the water is clean. Still, it’s nothing to write home about.
That pattern of small, weak, and unremarkable surf sticks around through the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. The water temp is sitting at 68°F, which is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Now, here’s the first real standout. Sunday morning, the 9th of August. This is the one to circle. The swell picks up to 4ft from the east, with a decent period of 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a solid 293 (moderate). But the real magic is the wind: a light cross-offshore from the NNW, keeping things clean. It’s an exposed beach, so it’s going to have some shape, and because it’s inconsistent, it might not be too crowded. That said, crowds are possible here. Expect good conditions.
Monday morning the 10th is also a beauty. The swell holds at 4ft from the ENE, with a period of 9 seconds, energy at 285 (moderate), and the wind goes full offshore from the west at 9 mph. That’s clean, lined-up surf. The afternoon goes glassy, too, with the swell dropping to 3ft. This is a solid session.
Things get a bit tricky after that. Some small surf on the 11th and 12th, but the wind turns onshore or cross-shore, making it choppy. Then we hit a heavy spike. From Thursday the 13th of August through the weekend, a massive swell arrives. The 13th morning shows 12ft from the SSE at 11 seconds, with energy at a massive 2430 (strong). That is way too big for this break. This is only for experts, and even then, the wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it’s messy. The afternoon stays big and lumpy. The 14th is similar, with 13ft and 12ft swells, but the wind is onshore and fresh. These days are not for paddling; honestly, this setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers.
The swell drops slowly through the 15th and 16th, but it’s still big (8ft to 8ft) and the wind is never favorable. The 17th is blown out with fresh cross-shore winds. The 18th is more of the same.
Finally, the last true standout: Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. The swell drops to a much more manageable 6ft from the SE, with a period of 10 seconds and energy at 707 (moderate). The wind is a light offshore from the WNW at just 3 mph. That is clean, well-shaped, and punchy. It’s going to be a great session for the intermediate crowd. The afternoon gets a bit onshore and the swell rises to 7ft, which is still surfable but a bit rougher.
So, for the best of the best, look to Sunday the 9th and Monday the 10th for the cleanest, most fun waves, and the 19th for a solid, clean finish. The middle of the period is a write-off unless you’re an expert looking for a beating.
Stay stoked, and I’ll see you out there.
