The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
The first week has some solid windows, but the real standout is a monster pulse that shows up in the second week. The water is sitting at 63.3° right now, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 3.6° down – so you’ll want a decent suit.
Wednesday July 15th kicks things off with a clean 3.6ft easterly swell at Fence (Port Elizabeth). The wind is light offshore from the west, so the morning session will be clean and glassy, but it’s only small. The combined energy is moderate (402). Not a day to rush for, but you’ll get a few if you’re keen.
Thursday July 16th is where it starts to pick up. A proper SSW groundswell rolls in, 5.6ft with a 14-second period – that’s long-period energy, meaning better shaped waves and longer lulls between sets. The morning is clean with a light offshore (402? No, the energy is 1317 – strong, moderate). This is a good day. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-offshore breeze, waves 5.2ft. Worth a paddle.
Friday July 17th holds the same quality. Morning has a 5.6ft SSW swell, 13-second period, light offshore wind. The afternoon goes glassy – 5.2ft, 12 seconds, zero wind. That’s as clean as it gets. The energy is still strong (1047 and 740). This is the best of the first week.
Saturday July 18th is a step down. The morning has a cross-onshore breeze, small wind ripples, and a 4.6ft S swell. The afternoon cleans up with a cross-offshore and a 3.6ft SSE swell, but it’s inconsistent. Not a standout.
Sunday July 19th morning is clean again, 4.3ft SSE swell, gentle offshore. The afternoon gets a 5.6ft SW swell but the wind picks up to 30 km/h cross-offshore, which makes it less appealing. The period also drops to 8 seconds – short-period, less shape.
Monday July 20th is pretty average. Light cross-shore winds, small swell (4.3ft), energy dropping. Not worth a special trip.
Tuesday July 21st – now we’re talking. The morning is glassy, no wind, with a 7.9ft SSW groundswell at 13 seconds. The energy is massive (1927). This is big, clean, and powerful – only for experienced surfers. The afternoon though… the swell jumps to 19.7ft from the SW, 14 seconds, with a cross-shore breeze. The energy is 20308 – that’s extreme. This is more of a big-wave event, not for the average surfer, and the wind is light cross-shore, so it might be a bit lumpy. Still, for the crew that can handle it, that’s a serious session.
Wednesday July 22nd morning keeps the size at 7.9ft, 14-second SSW groundswell, clean cross-offshore wind. Energy is 2283. Still excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon drops to 7.2ft but the wind picks up to 25 km/h, making it less clean.
Thursday July 23rd morning is 11.5ft, 13 seconds, but the wind is 25 km/h cross-offshore – that’s a bit wild. The afternoon drops to 9.8ft, 14 seconds, with lighter wind (15 km/h) and clean. That’s a solid window for experts.
Friday July 24th sees a 8.2ft SSW swell, 15-second period – very long period, which means it will be better at a reef or point than a beach break. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not perfect. The afternoon is cross-onshore, 7.9ft, still big but messy.
Saturday July 25th the swell drops to 5.9ft, but the wind is mixed. The afternoon is cleaner with a cross-offshore breeze.
Sunday July 26th starts with a 4.9ft SSW swell, 14 seconds, but the wind is 25 km/h cross-offshore. The afternoon is lighter (10 km/h) and clean, with 4.9ft and 14 seconds – a nice end to the week.
Monday July 27th morning is glassy, 4.3ft, 14 seconds. Clean and fun. The afternoon goes onshore, so that’s it.
Tuesday July 28th has a 5.9ft SSW swell, 16-second period – very long period. The wind is 20-25 km/h cross-offshore, so it’s clean but energetic. Not for beginners.
Wednesday July 29th and Thursday July 30th are poor. Onshore winds, lumpy, choppy. The swell is still there, but the quality is shot. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
The best on offer is Friday July 17th afternoon – glassy, 5.2ft, clean, and good energy. The absolute standout is Tuesday July 21st morning – 7.9ft, glassy,
