Alright, let’s get into it.
We’ve got a solid window of surf coming up at Fence (Port Elizabeth). This spot is a proper advanced wave, very consistent and fairly exposed to the swell. The water is sitting at about 64°, which is roughly 3° colder than normal for this time of year – that’s a fair bite, so you’ll want a decent steamer.
The action kicks off Tuesday morning, July 7th. It’s not big, with 4ft from the SW, but the period is a long 13 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. Winds are light offshore from the WSW, so the surface is going to be clean. The combined energy is moderate at 480. It’s a good, clean start to the window.
Wednesday morning, July 8th, things step up. The swell lifts to 5ft from the SSW, still with a 13-second period. Offshore winds again from the WSW, making for very good conditions. The energy jumps to 766. This is a really nice session for an advanced surfer – solid, clean, and consistent.
Now, Thursday morning, July 9th, the swell pumps up to 10ft from the SSW. That’s big, expert-level waves. The period holds at 13 seconds, but the energy is a massive 5753 – strong to very strong. However, the wind is cross-offshore from the WSW at 18 mph, which can make it tricky. This is for the experienced crew only; it’s going to be a handful.
The real standout is Friday morning, July 10th. The swell is still 10ft, but now from the S with a 14-second period, and the energy is 3490. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore from the WSW at 9 mph. The conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the best on offer – big, powerful, clean waves with a long period for that extra punch. If you’re skilled, this is the morning to be out.
Saturday morning, July 11th, it drops back to a more manageable 6ft from the SSW. The wind goes light offshore from the W, making it clean again. A good, fun size for advanced surfing after the big stuff.
Sunday morning, July 12th, forget it. The swell is 6ft from the SE, but the period is a short 7 seconds – weak, choppy. The wind is cross-onshore with rain showers. Poor conditions.
There’s a gap of poor to marginal surf until Monday morning, July 13th, when a 7ft ESE swell with 10-second period arrives, and the wind is light offshore. That’s a decent reset.
Saturday morning, July 18th, brings another clean session with 6ft from the SSW and a light offshore wind.
Then, the next real standout is Sunday morning, July 19th. The swell surges to 12ft from the SSE, but the period is shorter at 9 seconds. The wind is dead calm – just 3 mph offshore. The energy is 3160. This is another big day for experts, and the glassy conditions will make it world-class.
Finally, the biggest call of the whole forecast is Tuesday morning, July 21st. The swell hits 13ft from the SSE, with an 11-second period and a massive energy reading of 4566. The wind is moderate offshore from the W. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – the biggest, most powerful swell of the period. If you’re charging, that’s the morning to circle.
After that, it drops quickly back to 6ft on Wednesday, July 22nd, with clean offshore winds again.
So, overall: Friday the 10th for the clean, powerful groundswell, and Tuesday the 21st for the biggest, most raw swell of the bunch. Both require expert skills. The wave energy is strong throughout the big days.
