The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here, taking a look at Fence (Port Elizabeth) for the next couple weeks. This break is an advanced player, very consistent and wide open to the ocean, so we’ve got wave action coming in waves.
It all kicks off Thursday, July 16th. The water’s at 63.1°, that’s about 3.8° colder than what’s normal for this time of year – it’s definitely chilly, you’ll want a thick wetsuit. We have a 5.2ft groundswell from the SSW at 14 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 1147. A cross-off breeze keeps it clean. Not the biggest, but it’s a solid start.
Friday the 17th holds steady. Morning is a clean 5.6ft SSW swell with a 12-second period, offshore wind, and energy down slightly to 950. Still very good. Afternoon is a 5.2ft swell with a cross-off wind, still surfable.
Saturday the 18th is a little smaller but clean. Morning has a 3.9ft south swell at 12 seconds, offshore, energy of 497. Fun for the experienced. Afternoon stays similar at 4.3ft with cross-off, still fine.
Sunday the 19th morning brings glassy 3.3ft from the SSE, period short at 9 seconds, energy 375. It’s clean but small. Afternoon goes bad – a stiff 18 mph cross-off from the SW wrecks the 4.6ft short-period swell. Messy.
Monday the 20th bounces back. Morning is a clean 5.9ft SSW groundswell at 12 seconds with offshore wind, energy roaring back to 1309. Very good. Afternoon drops to 5.2ft with a light cross-shore breeze but marginal conditions due to tide.
Tuesday the 21st is mixed. Morning sees a small 3.6ft swell with a very long 15-second period, light onshore cross. Energy of 999. Long-period swells can be tricky at beach breaks. Afternoon is onshore with a 4.9ft swell. Not great.
Now, the real stuff kicks in. Wednesday the 22nd morning is a clean 8.2ft SSW swell at 13 seconds, offshore wind, energy at 2182. That’s expert-level size. Good conditions. Afternoon holds at 8.2ft with cross-off, still excellent.
Thursday the 23rd charges. Morning gives a clean 9.8ft SSW groundswell, 14-second period, offshore wind, energy at 3299. Expert territory. Afternoon is still at 9.8ft with cross-shore wind, but still high quality.
Friday the 24th morning is excellent with a clean 5.6ft SSW swell, long 16-second period, offshore wind, and energy of 2877. Afternoon picks up to 7.9ft, still clean and long period. Good for strong surfers.
Saturday the 25th is for experts only. Morning has 7.5ft from the south, massive 19-second period, onshore cross, energy at 5025. Afternoon is 9.8ft onshore with ENE winds. Huge but messy.
Sunday the 26th is the big one. Morning features a clean 8.2ft SSW swell, 16-second period, cross-off wind, energy at 5389. That’s excellent and big. Afternoon is even bigger – 9.8ft from the south, 19-second period, cross-off, and energy absolutely exploding at 11085. That’s a monster swell.
Monday the 27th morning is a clean 6.6ft S swell, 15-second period, energy 3067. Excellent. Afternoon turns into an onshore easterly mess at 15 mph. Call it early.
Tuesday the 28th offers a
