The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Fence (Port Elizabeth). We’ve got a decent run of surf on the horizon, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag with some real gems and some periods you’ll want to dodge.

The overall pattern shows a solid start, a bit of a lull mid-week, then a proper pulse of energy building towards the end of the week and into the start of August. The water temperature is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want the thick rubber.

We kick off on Saturday the 18th with some bumps in the water. It’s a bit messy with a cross-off wind, swell around 5ft from the SSW, and moderate energy (919). Not the best, but it’s something.

Sunday morning the 19th is where it starts to look better. Clean lines with a light offshore wind off the W, and a smaller 4ft swell from the SE. The combined energy is moderate (420). It’s a small, clean morning.

Monday the 20th is the first real standout. Morning glassy conditions with a light cross-off – the swell is 4ft from the SE with a nice long period of 12 seconds, giving it some proper push. The combined energy is solid (834). This is a great window for a session. The afternoon stays clean with a 4ft SE swell, still packing that long period. This is your best bet early on.

Things get tricky from the 21st. The wind swings onshore and the swell, while having some size, gets messy. You’ll want to skip Tuesday through to Thursday morning.

Now, hold onto your board. Friday the 24th of July is a big one. We’re looking at a 10ft SSW swell with a very long period of 16 seconds rolling in on Friday morning. The combined energy is massive (4176). This is only for experienced surfers, and with a moderate offshore wind, it’s going to be a powerful, clean session. The Saturday morning the 25th is also a standout, with a 7ft SSW swell, a 14-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is still very strong (1746). This is your call for a clean, heavy wave.

After that, the wind and swell get messy again from the 26th until the 30th. The wind is cross-onshore and the quality drops right off.

Then, we get a long-range gem. On Sunday the 2nd of August, it’s looking very promising. An 12ft swell from the ESE with an 11-second period, glassy conditions, and a massive combined energy (4410). This is a big, clean swell for experienced surfers again. The afternoon hangs in there with a 10ft ESE swell and glassy conditions (3510). These are the days to circle on the calendar, but remember, it’s a long way out so keep an eye on the forecasts.

Overall, the standout windows are Monday the 20th, Friday the 24th morning, Saturday the 25th morning, and the early August window. The rest of the time you’ll be fighting the wind.

Rusty.
