The Lowdown
Alright mates, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s cooking at Bruces Beauties for the next couple of weeks. This is a reef break, it’s inconsistent, so you need to be patient and pick your windows. The water’s running a bit colder than usual at 64°, so a thicker wetsuit is the call.
The first action comes in on Sunday the 19th of July. It’s a slow start, but there’s a clean 5ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period. The wind is blowing offshore from the WSW at 15 mph, so the surface will be clean. The combined energy is moderate at 400 (moderate wave energy). It’s a solid start, nothing mind-blowing, but a good chance to get the knees wet.
Monday the 20th of July looks better. The swell holds at 4ft from the SE, but the period stretches to 12 seconds, giving it more shape. The wind is offshore from the WSW at 12 mph, and the energy is strong at 646 (strong wave energy). This is a genuine standout for the first week—clean, manageable, and with some push.
Tuesday the 21st of July sees a big jump in size. The afternoon brings an 8ft swell from the SSW with a 14-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, which is great for this reef. The combined energy is huge at 2661 (strong wave energy), but the wind is cross-on from the E at 9 mph, making it a bit lumpy. This one is for experienced surfers only; beginners should stay well clear.
The rest of the week from Wednesday the 22nd through to Saturday the 25th of July is a write-off. The swell drops to tiny, and the wind is either too strong or onshore. There’s a gap of about four days with nothing worthwhile.
The next real standout is Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning session is glassy with a 15ft swell from the ESE at 10 seconds. The wind is a light NE at 3 mph, and the energy is massive at 5354 (very strong wave energy). This is an expert-only wave—huge, powerful, and clean. The afternoon sees a similar 15ft swell from the E at 11 seconds, with a light cross-shore breeze. The energy jumps to 8788 (very strong wave energy). This is the best of the entire forecast, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
Thursday the 30th of July is a solid follow-up. There’s a 5ft swell from the SSW with a 13-second period, clean cross-off winds from the WSW at 3 mph, and strong energy at 1969 (strong wave energy). It’s smaller, but the quality is there for experienced surfers.
The first of August (Saturday) brings a 10ft swell from the SSW with an 8-second period—short period, so it’ll be a bit crumbly. The wind goes offshore from the WSW at 12 mph in the afternoon, making it clean. The energy is 1722 (strong wave energy). This is another solid option for the crew who can handle the size.
The rest of the run into early August is messy. The swell is there, but the wind is strong and the periods are short. It’s not worth chasing until the forecast improves.
The standout of the whole outlook is Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning glass-off with a 15ft groundswell is the pick of the period. It’s inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for the sets, but when they come, it’ll be special.
Rusty.
