The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and we’ve got a slow, bumpy road ahead at Bruces Beauties. This is a reef break that needs the right swell, and for most of the next two weeks, it’s not happening. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than average for this time of year.
Right now, through Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, there’s small, weak swell around 2ft to 3ft out of the east, but the wind is cross-offshore and messy. The combined energy is nothing to write home about (around 100-146), and the conditions are ordinary. Not worth paddling out.
Saturday the 18th sees a bump up to 4ft from the south, but the wind is still cross-off, and the energy is moderate (441 in the morning). Still, the forecast calls it marginal. Sunday the 19th drops back to 2-3ft, and the wind picks up strong, blowing 25 mph in the afternoon. Hard pass.
Now, Monday the 20th morning is a glimmer. The wind goes glassy out of the northeast at just 3 mph, and there’s a 4ft, 12-second groundswell from the southeast. The energy is moderate (333), and the wave comment says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the best of the first week – small but clean. But by afternoon the wind swings cross-onshore and ruins it.
Tuesday the 21st sees a big jump in size. Morning has 5ft from the SSW with a very long 15-second period and strong energy (1407). But the wind is cross-on. Then Tuesday afternoon is the first true standout: 7ft of SSW swell at 14 seconds, with offshore wind. The energy jumps to 2078, and the forecast says excellent for experienced surfers. This is solid, well-shaped reef surf, but at over 8ft it’s for experts only. The long period will hold the lines clean here.
We then hit a dead patch from Wednesday the 22nd right through to Friday the 24th morning. That’s about 9 days of mostly poor, tiny, or wind-affected surf.
But hold onto your board – Friday the 24th morning is a monster. Glassy wind from the WSW at 3 mph, and a massive 13ft SSW groundswell with a 15-second period. The combined energy is 6594 – very strong. This is exceptional for expert surfers, but only experienced crew should even look at this. The glass will make it look perfect, but that size on a reef is serious.
Saturday the 25th morning is even bigger: 15ft from the SSW with an 18-second period – that’s an extremely long, powerful groundswell. Energy is 12799. The wind is light and cross-on, which will put a wrinkle on it. Still, for the charging brigade, this is a world-class day. After that, it fades into small, onshore junk.
Sunday the 26th morning brings a brief reprieve with 3ft of short-period ENE swell (8 seconds) and light offshore wind, but it’s just surfable. After that, the wind picks up, and the rest of the month is mostly poor with onshore or strong cross-offshore winds.
Honestly, the standout days are Tuesday the 21st afternoon and Friday the 24th morning. Tuesday has the best combo of size, offshore wind, and expert-level power. Friday is cleaner but exponentially bigger – a true big-wave day. Everything else is a waiting game.
Rusty.
