The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s in store for Bruces Beauties.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a long stretch of flat, frustrating conditions. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the month, there’s just nothing worthwhile happening. The swell is tiny and the wind is all over the shop, mostly cross or cross-off. Monday the 26th even sees some big, messy wind swell with a fresh easterly, but it’s blown out and lumpy, not worth paddling out for. You’re looking at nearly a full week of almost no surf.
Things finally start to turn around on the morning of Tuesday, the 5th of September. That’s the real standout. We’re looking at a solid 20ft swell from the SSW, with a long period of 14 seconds and a moderate cross-off breeze. The water is clean, and the combined energy is massive at 14,235. This is big, powerful groundswell. Because it’s over 8ft, this one is strictly for experts. This reef breaks best with swell from the ESE, so this southerly direction isn’t quite optimal, but with that size and period, it’ll still be a wild ride.
The following afternoon, the 5th, it’s still cooking. The swell drops to a still substantial 12ft from the S, with a gentle offshore wind. It’s exceptional for experts, with energy at 5,476. The crowd factor here is “sometimes,” so if you’re skilled, you might just have it reasonably uncrowded.
Moving into the 6th, the swell backs down a bit. The Sunday morning has a 6ft S swell but a strong cross-off breeze that keeps it clean, though the energy is down and the conditions are marginal. The afternoon is similar with a 7ft S swell and a strong offshore wind, which is clean but hard to paddle into.
Then on Monday the 7th, we’ve got a nice morning option. The swell is 6ft from the SSE, a solid long-period groundswell of 13 seconds, and a light offshore from the SSW. The combined energy is 1,077, and it’s glassy clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and that offshore wind is a major positive. The afternoon sees a big jump back up to 15ft from the SSW, but with a cross shore wind, making it tricky.
So overall, after a miserable first week, the second week delivers one absolute standout on the 5th of September, with another good window on the morning of the 7th. If you can wait, it’ll be worth the patience.
Rusty.
