The Lowdown
Alright, let’s chew through what’s on the table for Bruces Beauties. This wave is a reef setup that’s inconsistent, so it doesn’t fire often. The water’s at 18°, which is about 1° colder than normal for this time of year, so it’s a bit nippy.
The first real look is Tuesday 14 July. Tuesday morning, the swell is 5ft from the ESE with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind is a cross-off from the W at 12 mph. The energy is moderate at 487. The report says marginal surf with questionable tide. Tuesday afternoon, the wind swings offshore from the WSW at 16 mph, the swell drops to 5ft, still ESE, and the energy is 353. The afternoon is cleaner for wind, but the tide is still a concern.
Wednesday 15 July is smaller. Morning has 4ft from the E at 10 seconds, cross-off W wind at 16 mph, and energy of 257. The report calls it marginal. Afternoon drops to 3ft, energy climbs to 304, but the wave comments say poor conditions.
Thursday 16 July brings 3ft to 3ft ESE swell, periods of 10 to 11 seconds. Light cross-off to offshore winds. Energy is 138 to 189. The report says surfable but very ordinary.
Friday 17 July through Sunday 19 July is a dead zone of small, weak swells, mostly under 2ft, with energy dropping below 100 at times. The only bright spot is Saturday 18 July afternoon, where a S swell hits 4ft at 11 seconds with a light cross-off W wind and energy of 315, and the report says expect good surf conditions. It’s small but clean.
Then Monday 20 July kicks off a big change. Morning sees 8ft from the SSW at 11 seconds, with onshore NE wind at 12 mph. Energy is a big 1798. The report says marginal due to tide. The afternoon is 8ft from the SSW at 12 seconds, cross-on ENE wind, and energy of 2060. Still marginal. This is for advanced surfers only because of the size.
The absolute standout is Tuesday 21 July morning. Bruces gets 10ft from the SSW at a very long period of 16 seconds. The wind is a cross-off from the W at 16 mph, and the energy is a massive 4344. The report calls it marginal surf, but the score is the highest. This is a serious groundswell. That 16-second period means the waves will be powerful, well-shaped, and with long lulls between sets. The reef is perfect for this kind of long-period swell. The cross-off wind will keep it clean. It’s big – 10ft – so only for experienced surfers.
Tuesday afternoon collapses into a near gale from the WSW at 31 mph, with the swell dropping to 1ft – a complete write-off.
From Wednesday 22 July through Sunday 26 July, it’s mostly small, poor, or blown out. The swell is under 3ft, and energy is low. The exception is Friday 24 July, where the swell jumps to 6ft to 7ft from the SSE, but the period is a short 7 seconds, and the wind is cross-on from the N and E. The energy is 528 to 898, but short period and onshore wind make it messy.
Monday 27 July brings 7ft to 8ft from the E at 7 to 8 seconds, with cross-shore to cross-on winds. Energy is 363 to 680. The reports are poor to marginal.
The very end, Tuesday 28 July morning, shows another big pulse: 8ft from the SSW at 15 seconds, with onshore NNE wind at 12 mph, and energy of 3164. The report says marginal. The onshore wind kills it. The afternoon drops to 4ft from the E.
Wednesday 29 July is the last day, with a tiny 3ft from the E, glassy wind from the NNE at 3 mph, and energy of 95. The report says surfable but very ordinary.
The real standout is Tuesday 21 July morning. A 10ft, 16-second SSW groundswell with cross-off wind. That’s the one to circle. The rest is mostly small, weak, or windy. This is an inconsistent reef, so when it fires, you get on it.
Rusty.
