The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down the next couple of weeks. It’s a slow start, so don’t rush.
We’re talking about Bruces Beauties (a reef setup), and it’s an inconsistent spot, so it doesn’t fire often. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 2° cooler than average, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The first real chance to paddle out comes on Friday the 17th, but it’s nothing to get excited about. Tiny 2ft swell from the east, with a weak combined energy of just 87. The wind is a light cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but it’s really small and ordinary. Not a standout.
The 18th and 19th are a write-off. The swell pushes up to 4ft, but the wind is strong and gusty from the west (25-45 km/h), making for poor conditions. The scoring reflects that.
Then there’s a window on Monday the 20th morning. The wind drops to nothing – glassy, calm conditions. The swell is 4ft from the southeast with a period of 11 seconds, a moderate energy of 396. It’s clean, but the swell direction isn’t optimum for this break (it wants ESE), so the waves aren’t likely to be the best shape. Still, it’s the glassiest it’ll be all week.
The rest of that week into the 25th is a flat spell. Swell drops to 1ft, energy falls into the 20s and 30s. It’s just not happening.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. On Sunday the 26th, a big pulse arrives. The afternoon shows a solid 8ft southwest swell, with a very long period of 17 seconds and a beastly combined energy of 5810. That’s strong to very strong energy. The wind is a moderate cross-off, so it’ll be clean. But this is a reef break, and with a long period groundswell, expect it to be powerful and straight – best left for experienced surfers only. This is the first true standout of the outlook.
The 27th and 28th still hold size, with 6ft to 8ft SSW swell, but the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, making it lumpy. The energy is still high (around 2000 to 4000), but the conditions are marginal.
Then, look at Thursday the 30th afternoon. The swell is 8ft from the east, period 10 seconds, with a combined energy of 1160. The wind is a clean cross-off from the northwest, and the report says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. The swell direction (E) is a good match for what this break wants (ESE). This is the second standout – a proper, clean, powerful session for the crew who can handle it.
The 31st July and into August 1st, the swell drops back to 5ft to 7ft, and the wind picks up again, making it a bit of a mess.
So, the best on offer is Sunday the 26th afternoon for the big, clean groundswell (only for experts), and Thursday the 30th afternoon for a more manageable, cleaner east swell. The rest is small, windy, or flat.
