The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our little corner of the world. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up, but there’s a real monster lurking in the second week if you’ve got the skill and the patience.
The next week or so is pretty lackluster, to be honest. We’ve got a run of days with small, weak swell and just average conditions. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than what we usually get this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
Let’s break it down. The first real sniff of action is on Tuesday the 14th at Bruces Beauties. It’s a tricky reef setup, inconsistent, and it only works when the swell is from the ESE. That afternoon, we’ve got a 5ft ESE swell with a moderate 9-second period, clean under a light offshore wind. The wave energy is moderate (414). It’s a small window, but it’s the best we’ve got for a few days.
Wednesday the 15th through to Monday the 20th is a real slog. The swell drops off, with heights between 2ft and 4ft. The winds are mostly cross-offshore, which keeps the surface clean, but the energy is low and the wave comment is poor. Thursday the 18th afternoon has a moment of glassy conditions with a 4ft S swell, which will be clean, but the size is tiny and the period is short. It’s a skunk session waiting to happen.
Then, things get interesting. Tuesday the 21st of July is the standout. And I mean, *the* standout. The swell jacks up to a massive 13ft early, then 16ft in the afternoon from the SSW. The period climbs to 15-16 seconds, which is a very long-period groundswell. The wave energy is off the charts – 7261 in the morning, and a staggering 12546 in the afternoon. This is expert territory only. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the face will be clean. Because it’s such a long period, this powerful reef break should handle it beautifully, but you’ll need to be on your A-game. The crowd factor is there, but on a day this size, the lineup will thin out.
After that one-day pulse, it’s flat. Wednesday the 22nd through to the end of the month is a wasteland. The swell drops to nothing, with heights of 1ft, 1ft, and even flat days. The wind is often strong, sometimes onshore, making it choppy and messy. There’s nothing to recommend for surfing at all.
So, to wrap it up: the next 7 days are a write-off unless you’re desperate for a gutless 3ft wave. Your only real shot at something memorable is Tuesday the 21st at Bruces Beauties. If you’re an expert and you’re free, that’s the day. Otherwise, sit tight and wait for the next pulse.
Rusty.
