The Lowdown
Right. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next stretch.
Honestly, this run is a tough one. The only spot with any real potential in the whole 16-day window is Bruces Beauties, a reef break that’s inconsistent and exposed to the swell. It’s an advanced wave, and it doesn’t fire often. The guidance suggests it needs an ESE swell to be at its best, but we’re not really seeing that line up. The first few days are a total write-off – from the 20th through to the 24th, there’s just nothing doing. Tiny, weak swell and poor conditions dominate. The water temperature is sitting at 58°, which is a whopping 8° colder than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The first glimmer of something appears on the afternoon of the 24th (Monday). We get a 0.6ft SSW groundswell with a 15-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 181. The wind is offshore from the WSW, which is a major positive, keeping it clean. It’s surfable, but only just. Not a standout.
Then on the 25th (Tuesday), things get interesting but messy. The morning shows a 5ft SSW swell with a very long 18-second period – that’s a lot of energy (1118 combined) – but the wind is cross-onshore from the ENE at 12 mph, making it choppy. This is a reef break, so the long period could work, but the wind is a killer. The afternoon pumps up to 6ft from the same direction, but with a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore, it’s lumpy and messy. Only for experts if you’re desperate, but it’s not good.
The 26th (Wednesday) is similar – 5ft SSW swell, moderate energy, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore. Not clean.
The 27th (Thursday) afternoon is the best call in the first week. The swell drops to 3ft from the S, with a period of 11 seconds, and we get a gentle offshore wind from the WSW. The combined energy is 341, and the conditions are clean. It’s a small, clean, lined-up reef wave. That’s where I’d be.
The rest of the month and into early September is mostly poor or small. The 31st (Monday) morning brings a 8ft SSW swell with 13-second period and strong energy (1867), but the wind is cross-offshore from the W at 19 mph. It’s clean, but over 8ft, that’s expert-only territory. The afternoon of the 31st is the real standout of the whole outlook: 7ft SSW swell, 12-second period, 1506 combined energy, and a clean offshore wind from the WSW at 12 mph. The data says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” – that’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Into September, the 1st (Tuesday) afternoon has a 6ft E swell, but the period is a short 9 seconds, and the energy is moderate. Offshore wind from the WSW keeps it clean, but it’s not the same quality as the 31st. The 2nd (Wednesday) morning has a 4ft E swell, 10-second period, with light WNW winds – clean, but weak.
The standout sessions are the afternoon of the 27th of August for a small, clean reef wave, and the afternoon of the 31st of August for a proper, powerful, clean swell for experienced surfers. The rest is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
