The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a tricky run ahead at Bruces Beauties. This exposed reef setup needs the right combo of easterly swell and offshore wind, and for most of the next fortnight the stars just aren’t aligning. The good news? The first bit and the tail end show some genuine promise, with a couple of standouts that’ll get you frothing.
We kick off on Monday 17 August with a solid little push. Monday morning is the pick: 3ft of east swell rolling in at a nice 11-second period – that’s proper groundswell for the reef, giving it shape and power. Combined wave energy is moderate at 229, and the wind’s blowing light offshore from the southwest, keeping it clean. Water temp is a chilly 56°, a massive 10° colder than average, so you’ll want a thick suit. This is the one to aim for. Monday afternoon drops a touch to 3ft but stays clean with a WSW offshore – surfable, but the morning session is the stand.
Tuesday 18th sees the swell fade to 2ft, with a cross-offshore wind that makes it a bit ordinary. The rest of the week from Wednesday to Saturday the 22nd is small and weak – waves dropping to 1.0ft or 0.7ft, energy figures in the teens or single digits (13 to 17). That’s a stretch of six days with hardly a ripple. Sunday 23rd afternoon brings a sudden shift: 2ft from the south-southwest, but with a 15-second period and 231 energy – that’s long-period groundswell for reef points. Wind is light cross-off, so it could be clean, but it’s a short-lived window.
Monday 24th morning keeps that vibe with 3ft from the SSW and the same 15-second period, 256 energy, and light offshore wind. That’s another solid session, though by afternoon it’s dead again. Then we hit another dry spell from the 25th through to the 28th – mostly under 1.0ft, with one blip on the 26th where 5ft of east swell shows up but it’s onshore wind and choppy, poor conditions.
Now, for the true standouts: look to Saturday 29 August morning. That’s over a week away, so not locked in, but the forecast is exciting. 6ft of south-southwest swell, period a very long 14 seconds, and combined energy roaring to 1519 – that’s strong to very strong. The wind is cross-offshore from the west-southwest, so it should be reasonably clean on the reef. This is the biggest, punchiest swell of the whole run. It’s expert territory at that size, and Bruces is an advanced reef that’s inconsistent and can be crowded sometimes. If you’re skilled and can handle it, this is the session to circle. Sunday 30 August afternoon also offers a decent 3ft from the east with 307 energy and offshore wind, but it’s a comedown after that Saturday morning juice.
For the rest of the last days into September, it’s back to small, weak surf (1.0ft to 1ft) with onshore or cross-onshore winds – not worth paddling for.
The biggest highlight is that Monday 17 August morning with clean 3ft east swell, and the longer-range Saturday 29 August morning with that 6ft south-southwest groundswell on a long period – that’s the one for the experts, promising but keep an eye on it as it gets closer.
Stay patient and get out there when it’s good.
