The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Bruces Beauties.
This place is a reef set-up, and it’s a tricky one. It’s inconsistent, so it doesn’t fire often, and when it does, it’s for the advanced crew only. The water’s sitting at 61°F, which is *much* colder than normal for this time of year – a proper anomaly of 5°F colder, so you’ll be wanting a thick wetsuit.
The next few days are a bit of a write-off. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are flat with almost no energy (combined energy of all swells is just 2). Don’t bother.
Then, things start to look up. Monday afternoon (24th) we see a jump to 3ft of SSW swell with a very long 15-second period. The energy is moderate (415). The wind is light offshore from the SW, so it’ll be clean. It’s a start.
Now, Tuesday the 25th morning is the real standout. This is the best session on offer. We’re looking at 5ft of SSW swell, with a 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell, long lines. The energy is strong (1158). The wind is offshore from the WSW at 9 mph, so it’ll be clean and lined up. This is for experienced surfers only, as the size is on the limit. The swell direction from the SSW matches the optimum direction for this break (ESE) reasonably well, but the long period means it might be a bit straight at a reef break. Still, it’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Tuesday afternoon drops right back to nothing.
Wednesday the 26th is a write-off. The swell is big (8ft to 10ft) with huge energy (3833 and 4302), but the wind is howling onshore from the east at 18-25 mph. It’ll be a messy, lumpy, blown-out zone. Not for surfing.
Thursday the 27th is interesting. The morning is a bit iffy with a light cross-on wind, but the afternoon turns glassy. The swell is 6ft from the SSW with a 12-second period, energy is strong (1569). With glassy conditions, this is another top session for experienced surfers. The swell is still a solid size, so it’s not for the faint-hearted.
After that, the quality drops. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th have cross-on winds and smaller, weaker swell. Not worth paddling out.
Sunday the 30th sees a return of clean conditions with moderate offshore winds from the WSW, but the swell is small (3ft to 4ft) with weak energy (254 to 365). Surfable, but ordinary.
The first week of September is a bit of a gap. From the 31st of August through to the 7th of September, there’s nothing worth getting excited about. Swell heights are tiny (1.0ft to 3ft), energy is low, and the wind is often cross-off or onshore. There are a couple of glassy moments on the 2nd of September morning, but the swell is only 2ft and weak. It’s a long, quiet stretch.
So, to sum it up: your best bet is Tuesday the 25th morning, with Thursday the 27th afternoon as a close second. Get on it while it’s good, because this spot doesn’t fire often.
Rusty.
