The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here.
First up, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first real chance to wet a line is Tuesday the 14th at Bruces Beauties. This is a reef break, exposed to the ESE, and it’s an inconsistent spot, so when it does show, you’ve got to pay attention. Tuesday morning sees a clean 5 ft of ESE swell, with a moderate cross-off breeze from the west. The water is sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year – nothing wild there. The wave energy is moderate (481). It’s not a huge day, but it’s clean and the wind is working with us. Tuesday afternoon looks even better as the wind swings to the WSW and goes offshore, with 5 ft of ESE swell, still clean. The energy drops a touch (414), but that offshore wind is a major positive. This is the best on offer in the early part of the outlook.
Wednesday the 15th drops off a bit. Morning sees 4 ft from the east, but it’s a cross-off wind, and the energy is weaker (257). The afternoon is smaller at 3 ft, and the conditions are just average. Thursday the 16th is tiny – 3 ft in the morning with a cross-on wind, not worth the paddle. The afternoon is a bit better at 3 ft with a cross-off wind, but it’s very ordinary.
Friday the 17th is flat and weak. The morning has 2 ft and the energy is down to 104. The afternoon is the same size, but with a light offshore wind, so it’s clean, but gutless. Saturday the 18th sees a jump in size – 7 ft from the south in the morning, with a period of 12 seconds, but the wind is onshore and poor. The energy is very strong (1366), but the quality is junk. This is only for experts if you’re desperate, and honestly, with that onshore wind, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddling. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 6 ft, but still onshore.
Sunday the 19th is cleaner. The morning has 5 ft from the SSE with a cross-off wind, moderate energy (518). The afternoon is better, with a 4 ft SSE swell and a nice offshore wind, producing clean, moderate surf. It’s not a standout, but it’s a solid session.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday the 20th is flat again, with 2 ft and cross-on winds. Don’t bother. But Tuesday the 21st – that’s a big one. The morning sees 7 ft from the SSW with an 11-second period, and a clean cross-off wind. The energy is very strong (1704). This is a serious swell, but it’s pushing 8 ft in the afternoon, with a 14-second period and a cross-on wind. That’s a long-period groundswell, and at a reef break like this, it could be very good, but the wind is a letdown. The morning is the pick, but it’s big – only for experienced surfers.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are tiny, with 1 ft and 2 ft swells, not worth a mention. The afternoon of the 23rd has a 2 ft swell with a 15-second period – that’s a very long period, but the size is just too small to do anything with.
Friday the 24th has a 5 ft SSW swell in the morning, but the wind is cross-on and choppy. The energy is strong (886), but the quality is poor. Saturday the 25th is the real standout of the second week. The afternoon has a massive 13 ft SSW swell, with a 14-second period, and a light cross-shore wind. The energy is extreme (5329). This is a huge, long-period groundswell. At a reef break, it could be absolutely firing, but it is enormous. This is for experts only, and even then, it’s a serious, serious wave. The morning is flat, so the afternoon is the window.
Sunday the 26th still has size, with 6 ft in the morning, but the wind is cross-on, and the energy is strong (1077). The afternoon gets even worse with a 35 km/h cross-on wind. The rest of the outlook from the 27th to the 29th is all small, weak, and poor quality, with swells under 3 ft and onshore or cross-on winds. Not worth your time.
So, the real standouts are the Tuesday the 14th afternoon session with clean offshore winds and 5 ft, and the Saturday the 25th afternoon for the big-wave crew, if they can handle that 13 ft beast. The Tuesday the 21st morning is also a solid option for advanced surfers. Keep an eye on that 25th though – it’s a long way out, so it’s promising but not locked in.
Rusty.
