The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards.
First off, for the next week and a bit, it’s a real mixed bag but mostly pretty grim. The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 60°F (much colder than normal) for this time of year, so you’ll be wanting a good thick wetsuit.
The only spot with any real chance to get some waves through the whole run is Bruces Beauties. It’s a reef break, so it needs the right tide and swell, and it’s unfortunately inconsistent. The first couple of days, right through the weekend and into Monday, are a total write-off – don’t even bother.
The first half-hearted pulse shows up on Monday afternoon the 24th of August. The combined wave energy is only moderate (128), with a 2ft SSW groundswell at a long 15 seconds. The wind is offshore WSW at 16 mph, so it’ll clean the faces up, but it’s only surfable waves in very ordinary conditions. Nothing to get excited about.
Tuesday the 25th has a bigger pulse of energy (457), with 3ft SSW swell at 16 seconds, but the wind swings onshore and cross, making it choppy and messy. Not worth it.
Things get serious Wednesday the 26th but in the worst way – the swell jumps to 6ft in the morning, building to 8ft by the afternoon, with fresh to strong onshore winds. That’s a lot of power but totally unsurfable, just lumpy, messy and blown out. That big energy is strong (2391 and 2152) but it’s a kite surfer’s day, not for paddling.
Now, the standout of the entire outlook is Friday the 4th of September. That morning you’ve got a massive 15ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16 seconds, and combined energy is a towering 10383. That’s a serious deep ocean swell. The wind is onshore from the ENE, but the forecast is for marginal but questionable conditions with a quality rating that actually warrants a bigger mention. For an advanced reef like Bruces, with a direction that most closely matches what it loves from the ESE... that is a huge, powerful swell. It’s going to be very, very big and only for experts. Because it’s over 8ft, beginners and intermediates stay well out of it. Also, those really long 16-second periods at a beach or open coast would make it close out, but being a reef, it has a much better chance of holding the shape. Expect crowds to be possible as word gets out.
The second best option would be Saturday morning the 5th of September. That 5ft SSW swell has bumped down, but you get glassy conditions with a light wind from the east. Combined energy is moderate (609). It’s clean, the wind is perfect, and the size is far more manageable. That will be the pick for people who don’t want a 15ft bomb.
All in all, Bruces Beauties is your only option. It’s a typically inconsistent spot, so a run like this is fairly normal for the area. Don’t hold your breath for most of the first week, but hold out for that huge pulse on the 4th of September as a real standout, though it’s a long way off and less certain.
Stay stoked, Rusty.
