The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Bruces Beauties. It’s a bit of a waiting game, but there’s a couple of moments that’ll get the heart rate up.
The overall pattern is a long, slow start. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing to begin with – the first real surfable window doesn’t show up until Monday afternoon, August 24th. Before that, it’s just tiny, wind-affected slop not worth paddling out for. The gap from now until Monday afternoon is a full four days of flat-to-poor conditions.
So, Monday afternoon, August 24th, we finally see a pulse. A 3ft swell from the SSW at 15 seconds, with a moderate offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy is moderate (309). The water is a very unusual 60°F, which is a massive 6°F colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a real shock to the system, so bring a thick suit. It’s clean, but not a standout.
The real standout window is Tuesday afternoon, August 25th. We’re looking at a 5ft swell from the SSW, but with a period of 16 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The combined energy jumps up to strong (988). The wind is light and cross-offshore from the south, making it clean. This is the pick of the early window. It’s an advanced reef break, and it’s inconsistent, so be patient. That long period will make it peel nicely down the reef, but it might be a bit too straight for a beach break – not that this is a beach break.
Wednesday morning, August 26th, sees a bigger pulse but it’s ruined by a fresh cross-onshore wind from the east at 22 mph. The swell hits 6ft, but the quality is poor. It stays messy and blown out through Wednesday and Thursday, with a 10ft swell on Wednesday afternoon getting completely torn apart by 25 mph cross-onshore winds. That’s kiteboarding territory, not paddle surfing. The combined energy is very strong (2887 and 2082), but it’s useless for us.
Friday morning, August 28th, is another standout. The swell drops to 6ft from the east at 10 seconds, with glassy conditions and a light ENE breeze. That’s “excellent surf for experienced surfers” – it’s a 6ft wave, so it’s solid and best left to the advanced crew. The combined energy is very strong (1360). This is the best of the lot for the whole run.
After that, it gets poor again for a long stretch, with cross-shore and onshore winds through the weekend and into early September. The next glimmer shows up on Wednesday, September 2nd. The afternoon brings a 4ft swell from the SSW with a 17-second period, combined with a gentle offshore wind from the WSW. The combined energy is strong (1073). That’s a clean, powerful groundswell setup for the reef.
Finally, on Sunday, September 6th, we get a late pulse. A 8ft south swell at 14 seconds, with a gentle cross-offshore wind from the WNW, giving a combined energy of 3371. That’s very strong, but it’s an 8ft wave – experts only. The wind is clean, but it’s a lot of water moving.
So, to wrap it up: the best bets are Friday morning, August 28th for the glassy, solid east swell, and Tuesday afternoon, August 25th for the clean, long-period SSW groundswell. The long-range Sunday, September 6th call is promising but less certain. Otherwise, it’s a lot of waiting for those few moments of magic.
Rusty.
