The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the one spot we’ve got, Bruces Beauties. This is a tricky reef set-up, only fires up when everything lines up, and it’s inconsistent as they come. We’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands, but there’s a real standout session brewing if you’ve got the patience.
Right now, there’s not much doing. The first few days are a write-off thanks to moderate cross-off winds and pretty average swell. For Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, we’re looking at 4 ft to 4 ft of S/SE swell, but the wind is a cross-off breeze at 12 mph, and the wave energy is weak to moderate (438 down to 207). It’s not the kind of thing that’ll get you out of bed.
We’ve got a blank stretch coming up, with a few days of nothing special. Monday the 20th has a bit of clean 4 ft SE swell but the wind is cross, and the energy is moderate (423). Not a total loss, but not a standout. Tuesday the 21st morning is where things start to get interesting – glassy conditions, 4 ft SE swell, moderate energy (286). That’s a window to get a few clean ones, but the swell is still a bit small.
Then, Tuesday afternoon sees a jump: 7 ft from the SSW, with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is strong (1902). The wind is cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but that size is getting into expert territory. It’s a good session, but the real prize is coming.
The standout is Friday the 24th of July. Morning breaks are going to be absolutely firing. We’ve got a 13 ft SSW groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds, and the combined energy is massive (7591). That’s a serious amount of water moving. The wind is glassy – dead calm. For a reef break like this, that long-period swell is a dream, but it’s expert-only. This is the one to circle on the calendar. The afternoon flattens out, so get out there early.
After that, the swell drops right off until Sunday the 26th. That morning brings back 10 ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and strong energy (4969), but the wind is a fresh cross-off (19 mph), so it’s going to be a bit wild. The afternoon sees a moderate offshore, which is cleaner, but the size is still big.
The rest of the forecast into the second week is a mess. Monday the 27th has strong cross-onshore winds and messy conditions, and the swell is all over the place. There’s a period of solid swell but poor wind, and it’s not worth it unless you’re a kite surfer. The energy stays high (over 3500) but the wind wrecks it.
A few smaller windows exist, like Tuesday the 28th morning, but the wind is onshore and the quality is poor. The last week is mostly a dead loss with tiny, weak swell and strong winds. The final weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August has a little 5 ft SSW pulse, but the wind is onshore and the energy is moderate. Not worth chasing.
The bottom line: Bruces Beauties is a fickle wave. It’s inconsistent, but when it’s on, it’s on. The real standout is the morning of Friday the 24th of July – glassy, huge, and long-period. That’s the one. For the rest, pick your windows carefully. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
