Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get the lowdown on West Pier (Port Alfred) in good old feet and knots.
The water’s a touch chilly at 65°, a bit below what we’d expect for this time of year.
The first chance to paddle out is Saturday morning. We’ve got a 8-foot SE swell, 12-second period, cross-off wind, and a solid wave energy reading (2018). But the call is marginal – it’s not gonna be a classic. Sunday mornings and afternoons look far better: clean skies, light cross-off winds, and the swell drops from 5ft to 5ft, both out of the SE. Nice and clean for an intermediate surfer, but nothing special.
Monday gets smaller – 3ft in the morning from the SW, clean but a bit weak (415 energy). Afternoon picks up to 4ft but gets crossed up. If you’re itching, Sunday’s the pick of the early days.
Tuesday and Wednesday are sketchy. Tuesday has 5ft of SSW swell with a 12 mph wind putting chop on it. Lumpy. Wednesday gets ugly with 22 mph winds and the same size – the cross-chop will be bad. Thursday the 9th is the first true standout. Thursday morning brings a solid 10ft SSW swell with a 14-second period, and the wind is light (6 mph) and cross from the ENE. Wave energy is massive (3553), but the forecast says it’s probably too big for this break – that’s expert-only territory. Thursday afternoon is still heavy at 8ft.
After that, Friday the 10th stays big (8ft, SSW) but the wind turns onshore. Saturday the 11th is a total write-off with 22-25 mph winds.
The second week quiets down. Sunday the 12th morning shows 5ft and clean, but wind picks up later. Monday the 13th drops to 3ft, clean but tiny – longboard or foamie weather. That little lull persists until Wednesday the 15th, when we see a clean 4ft SSW swell with a strong 16 mph offshore wind from the NNW. That’s a nice, clean morning session.
But the absolute highlight? Friday the 17th of July. A monster 13ft SSW swell, 12-second period, and a light cross-off wind from the west. The wave energy is off the charts (4258). You’d need to be a real expert, and again, it might be too big for the break, but for the chargers, that’s the day. Saturday the 18th is still huge (12ft to 10ft) with clean offshore winds – another big-wave day. Sunday the 19th turns into a gale with 34 mph winds – stay home.
Best on offer for the average surfer: Sunday morning the 5th. For the big-wave crew: Thursday morning the 9th and Friday the 17th – both are proper, heavy days.
Rusty.
