The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Blouberg. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, and while there’s some proper grunt in the ocean, it’s a mixed bag of timing and conditions. The standout period is going to be around the middle of next week, but we’ll get to that.
The water is sitting at 56°, which is a good 4° cooler than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thicker wetsuit. The first real action doesn’t kick off until Saturday, the 8th of August. The morning starts with some clouds and a light 3 mph northerly wind, keeping it cross-off. We’ve got a 8 ft SW swell, with a period of 13 seconds. That’s a pretty solid groundswell, and the combined energy is a massive 2221 (strong), but at this size, it’s strictly for the experienced crew. It’s way too big for beginners.
Saturday afternoon, the wind swings to the WSW at 6 mph, blowing onshore, and the swell jumps to 12 ft. That’s expert-only territory, and the wind is going to mess it up. Sunday is a write-off with 22 mph cross-shore winds and a massive 12 ft SW swell. The morning has rain, and the afternoon is clear but still blown out. The combined energy is over 3100 (very strong), but it’s just not worth it for a paddle.
Monday, the 10th, the swell drops to 8 ft from the SSW, but the wind is still a moderate 16-19 mph cross-off, and the quality is marginal. Not great.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday the 11th of August has a beautiful morning. Light 6 mph ESE cross-off wind, a clean 7 ft SSW swell at 12 seconds. Combined energy is 1228 (moderate-strong). The afternoon drops to 5 ft with the same clean conditions. It’s a genuine contender for a good session.
But the real standout is Wednesday the 12th of August. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Morning brings a 6 ft WSW swell with a very long 19-second period, combined energy of 2066 (strong), and a 9 mph offshore wind from the ENE. The afternoon is even better, 6 ft SW swell, 18-second period, offshore 6 mph ENE breeze. That’s long-period, clean groundswell hitting a point break setup. It’s going to be excellent for experienced surfers, and the offshore wind will make it glassy. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have some company, but it’ll be worth it.
Thursday the 13th holds good energy with 8 ft and 7 ft swells, still clean with cross-off winds, but the morning is a bit bigger. Friday the 14th is still clean in the morning at 6 ft, but the afternoon gets a moderate breeze and becomes marginal.
The following weekend, the 15th and 16th, is more marginal with cross-shore and onshore winds, though the 16th morning has a clean 5 ft swell. Then Monday the 17th of August brings a massive 10 ft SSW swell at 16 seconds, combined energy 4670 (very strong), with glassy conditions in the morning. That’s for experts only, but if you can handle it, the morning glass-off will be magic. Tuesday the 18th is also glassy in the morning with a more manageable 7 ft swell.
The end of the window, from the 20th onwards, gets messy again. Big 12 ft to 15 ft swells with strong onshore and cross-shore winds, combined energy hitting 7866 (very strong). That’s kite-surfing conditions, not for a paddle. The 22nd and 23rd have some cleaner, smaller swell, but it’s mostly marginal.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re experienced, the absolute best on offer is Wednesday the 12th of August with that long-period, offshore cleaned-up groundswell. Tuesday the 11th and Thursday the 13th are also solid. For the brave, the glassy mornings on the 17th and 18th are worth a look, but it’s big. The rest of the period is a mix of wind and size issues.
