The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
We're looking at Oiso Jetty, and the first thing I gotta tell you is that the surf window kicks off on Tuesday the 4th of August, but it's a real mixed bag, and things don't really fire up until later in the week. The water temp is sitting at 82°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the wetsuit can stay in the car.
The first session to look at is Tuesday morning. We've got a clean 5 ft swell coming from the SE with a solid 17-second period. That's a proper groundswell, and it's packing some serious energy. The wind is a cross-off from the NE at 16 mph, which should keep the surface glassy. The jetty can handle a long-period SE swell, and with the water being warm, it's a decent start. But the quality is only marginal, and crowds are possible at this spot.
Wednesday morning is the real standout here. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the SSE, period still a long 16 seconds, and the energy is pumping. The wind is a cross-off from the NNE at 16 mph, keeping those waves clean. This is the best on offer in the whole run. It's a sizeable groundswell, pushing past 5 ft, so it's not for beginners, but for an intermediate surfer with a bit of bottle, this is the session to paddle out for. The jetty is fairly exposed to that SSE direction, so you'll get the sets.
The rest of the week is a slow fade. Thursday and Friday still have decent size, around 7 ft to 7 ft, but the winds turn more cross-on and onshore, making it choppy. The energy stays high, but the quality drops off. By Saturday morning, it's down to 5 ft and the winds are light cross-onshore, just making it a bit messy.
Then we hit a long dry spell. From Sunday the 9th onwards, the swell drops steadily. We get a few days of clean, cross-off winds in the middle of the second week, but the swell is tiny, only 3 ft to 2 ft. The energy is weak. There's just not enough push to make it worthwhile. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during those light wind days. The forecast stays flat right through to the 19th of August, with no real surfable waves on offer. So, a bit of a bummer for the long run, but that Wednesday morning is the one to circle.
Rusty.
