Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s see what we’ve got for the next couple of weeks at Whangamoa.
Overall, it’s a pretty grim run, to be honest. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor conditions kicking off right away, with a chunk of nothing days in the middle. The only real hope is a potential window around the 16th of July, but even that has its issues.
We start off this Sunday morning, the 5th of July, with a bit of a tease. There’s a 5ft swell pushing in from the NNW, but it’s wrapping up from the NW which isn’t the optimum direction for this sandbar. The water’s sitting at 57°F, which is about average for the time of year. The wave energy is moderate at 491, but it’s sloppy with onshore wind. That pretty much fizzles out by the afternoon, with smaller 4ft swell and cross-shore wind killing any real quality.
Then we hit a massive, painful lull. From Monday the 6th of July all the way through to the morning of Wednesday the 15th of July, there’s really nothing worth paddling out for. The swell either disappears completely, or it’s tiny and wind-battered. Thursday the 16th of July shows a flicker of life, with a clean, glassy morning and a building 4ft NNW swell. The energy is solid at 206, and those light WNW winds would have it looking clean. But it’s a sandbar, and the groundswell potential is there. The problem is, by the afternoon it’s onshore and messy, and the following days aren’t much better.
Forget the rest of that week into the 20th. There’s some small swell, but it’s lumpy, onshore, or just ordinary.
The Best Bet: If you’re desperate and have the patience of a saint, your only real window is the morning of Thursday, July 16th. That early glassy session with 5ft from the NNW is the standout. It’s not huge, and it’s a sandbar, but it’s the best looking thing in a forecast full of nothing. Just don't expect much else after that.
Rusty.
