Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whangamoa over the next 16 days.
Right, the screen’s been flat for a while and honestly, it’s a pretty quiet picture for the next few days. We’re looking at a 16-day window, but there’s a real gap of small, weak conditions to start with. Nothing worth paddling out for until we get to the second week. Then things start to rumble.
Let’s talk about Whangamoa (sandbar). This spot is a fickle one, inconsistent and only really lights up when the swell direction plays ball with that NW optimum. The water temp is sitting at 57°, a touch warmer than typical for this time of year – just a slight anomaly, nothing crazy, but pleasant enough.
First proper bit of action lands on Tuesday, July 14th. The morning shows a 5ft swell from the NNW, period of 8 seconds. That’s not a long-period groundswell, but the combined energy is sitting at 334 – moderate wave energy that’ll feel punchy. Wind is light and cross-off from the SW, so the surface will be clean. Not a standout yet, but it’s a start.
The real standout, the one to circle the date for, is Monday, July 20th. That morning we’ve got a 5ft swell from the north, and the period jumps to 12 seconds – proper groundswell. Combined energy hits 586, strong wave energy. The wind is offshore from the SSE at 6 mph, keeping it clean and lined up. The afternoon stays similar, with 4ft from the north and a 11-second period, energy at 403. This is by far the best on offer. For a sandbar, that longer period might make it a bit straight, but with offshore wind, it’ll be classy.
On Sunday, July 19th, the morning has 4ft from the north, 10-second period, energy at 346, and clean offshore winds. It’s a solid warm-up for that Monday. For Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, there are only tiny bits of swell – 1ft to 2ft – glassy conditions but nothing to drive a plan for. Crowds at Whangamoa are listed as “never”, so you’ll have it to yourself even when it’s on.
So there you go. A bit of a wait, but that Monday July 20th is the one to set your alarm for. Keep your fingers crossed the long-range forecast holds.
