The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk surf.
We’ve got a solid run starting Sunday morning and going for days. The standout is Racetrack, a reef and point that loves a south-west swell. Water temp is 78°, a bit cooler than usual.
Sunday morning brings 6ft SSW swell, 15 seconds, clean offshore wind at 16 mph. That’s excellent for experienced surfers, with moderate to strong energy (1986). Sunday afternoon is similar, energy a bit higher (2256). Monday and Tuesday keep the quality – 6–6ft SSW, 15–16 seconds, clean offshore winds. This is the sweet spot.
Wednesday drops a touch to 5ft, still clean. Thursday afternoon is a gem – 4ft swell with a 20-second period, 2876 energy. Long, powerful groundswell and a light offshore. Friday 28 August morning is the biggest – 8ft SSW, 16 seconds, 3731 energy. That’s strong. Offshore in the morning, but strictly for experts.
Saturday 29 August still has 6ft and clean conditions. The following week sees size drop but plenty of clean windows. Monday 31 August has 3ft swell with a 19-second period – super long-period groundswell, best on the point. Early September brings another pulse of 6–7ft SW swell with 16–17 seconds and consistent offshore winds.
There’s a lull around Thursday 3 September afternoon into Friday with smaller 4–5ft swell and cross-off winds. The energy picks up again Sunday 6 September with a 7ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-off.
Best of the bunch: Sunday 23 August morning for that first clean, long-period groundswell, and Friday 28 August morning for the biggest, most powerful swell. Crowds are always heavy at Racetrack, so be early.
Rusty.
