The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks.

We’ve got a solid run of surf on the cards, starting this Thursday morning and rolling through for a good stretch. The first few days are the real standout, so let’s get into it.

First up, Racetrack. This is a reef and point setup, exposed to the swell, and it’s a very consistent spot. The water temperature is sitting at 78°, which is about normal for this time of year, so nothing wild there.

Thursday morning kicks things off with a clean 8ft swell from the SW, with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The wind is offshore from the ESE at 12 mph, keeping things clean. The combined energy is strong at 3737. This is serious surf for advanced surfers only – over 8ft, so it’s expert territory. The crowd factor is always an issue here, so be prepared for a lineup.

Thursday afternoon holds similar energy, with a 8ft SW swell, still offshore at 16 mph, and energy at 3094. Still excellent.

Friday morning drops a touch to 5ft from the SSW, but the period is even longer at 18 seconds. The wind stays offshore. The energy is still strong at 2588. Friday afternoon picks back up to 8ft, with the same clean conditions and energy at 3289.

Saturday and Sunday stay solid. Saturday morning has 7ft SSW swell, offshore wind, and energy at 2417. Sunday morning sees a slight drop to 6ft, but still with gentle offshore wind and clean conditions. The energy is 1986. Sunday afternoon the wind goes cross-offshore, but the swell holds.

This first week from Thursday through to Tuesday is the best of the bunch. The swell is consistent, the wind is favourable, and the quality is excellent for experienced surfers. The long period means the waves will have real shape and power, but at a point and reef like Racetrack, that’s a good thing – it’ll line up nicely.

After that, the second week, from around Wednesday the 27th, the energy drops a bit. Thursday morning has a smaller 4ft swell with cross-offshore winds, but Thursday afternoon surprises with a 3ft swell from the SSW and a very long period of 19 seconds, giving an energy of 1563. The wind is still cross-off, but it’s clean.

Then we get a return of bigger swell on Friday the 28th morning, with a 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and energy of 3313. Winds are light and cross-offshore. That’s a strong one, but it’s a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.

The following Tuesday, the 1st of September, looks like a real highlight. Morning sees an 8ft SW swell with an 18-second period, gentle offshore wind, and energy at 4546. That’s a powerful, clean setup. The afternoon holds similar size and offshore wind. This is definitely a standout for the second week, though it’s further out, so treat it as promising but not locked in.

The rest of the second week, from Wednesday the 2nd onward, stays in the 5ft to 7ft range, with mostly offshore or cross-offshore winds. The energy stays moderate to strong, but nothing that matches the earlier peaks.

Overall, the best windows are the first few days from Thursday 20th to Tuesday 25th, and then that Tuesday the 1st of September. Racetrack is a spot that rarely lets you down when the swell hits, and with the wind playing ball, you’re in for a treat.

Rusty.
