Table - best surf conditions forecast for Racetrack over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Racetrack. The next fortnight is all about this one spot, and it’s a ripper when it lines up. We've got a solid run of swell, so don't expect any flat spells.
The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, nothing weird there.
The week kicks off on Thursday the 9th of July with a strong groundswell, 7ft from the SSW and a long 15 second period. The combined energy is pumping at 2136 (strong to very strong). That’s a lot of water moving, and with a fresh offshore breeze from the ESE at 19 mph, the faces will be clean. But look, it’s a big one – over 7ft – so this is really only for the experts at Racetrack. Friday the 10th holds similar size, still 6ft and a touch longer period at 16 seconds, but with rain showers around. Still offshore, still powerful, still for experienced surfers only.
Saturday the 11th of July sees the swell drop a little to 5ft in the morning, easing to 5ft by the afternoon. The period shortens up to 14 seconds. That afternoon session is where it gets really interesting: the guidance calls it excellent for experienced surfers, with a moderate offshore breeze. The combined energy is still moderate to strong at 1208.
Sunday the 12th through Monday the 13th morning, the swell backs right off to under 3ft. The energy drops to around 400 (weak to moderate). It’s clean and offshore, but small. Then Monday afternoon throws a curveball – the swell only comes up to 3ft, but the period jumps to a very long 21 seconds. That’s pure groundswell. At Racetrack, being a reef and point, that long period will wrap in beautifully. The energy bumps up again to 1162 (moderate to strong). Still clean with a moderate offshore. That Monday afternoon could be a sneaky standout for the savvy surfer.
Tuesday the 14th of July brings the size back up, 6ft building to 6ft with 17-18 second periods. The combined energy rockets to 2504 (very strong) in the afternoon. The wind stays offshore, but it’s a fresh breeze at 19 mph. It’s powerful, raw, and again, only for the experts.
Through the middle of the week and into the next weekend (16th to 19th July), we see a pattern of 5ft to 6ft SSW swell, with periods mostly in the 13-15 second range. The wind holds offshore from the ESE, generally moderate. The conditions are clean and the guidance is rating these as very good to excellent for experienced surfers. Saturday the 18th afternoon and Sunday the 19th are particularly solid, with 5ft and 5ft swell, moderate breeze, and clean conditions.
Now, looking into the second week, the trend continues. Monday the 20th of July has a punchy 6ft SSW swell with a long 18 second period and fresh offshore wind – combined energy at 2541 (very strong). Tuesday the 21st sees the biggest wave heights of the run, 7ft to 8ft, again with strong energy (2441). That’s solid, solid groundswell, and the wind is offshore but moderate. Expert territory.
Wednesday the 22nd drops back to 5ft in the morning, but the afternoon picks up to 6ft from the SSW. Energy is high at 1557 and 1230. Clean and offshore. Thursday the 23rd the wind shifts a little to the SSE at 9 mph, going cross-offshore. Swell hangs around 4-5ft. Still clean, but not the classic offshore groom. Friday the 24th of July finishes the outlook strong, with 4ft SSW swell, a long 16 second period, and a moderate offshore ESE breeze. Combined energy at 1194 (moderate to strong). Excellent conditions dialled in.
The Standout: If I had to pick, I’d say the combination of size, long period, and offshore wind makes Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of July the true highlights. Consistent 5ft to 6ft SSW swell, clean, and with a moderate offshore wind. But don’t sleep on Monday the 13th afternoon – that 21-second period at a point break like Racetrack is pure magic.
For the rest, it’s a consistent run, but remember Racetrack is always crowded and it’s advanced-only when it gets over 5ft. The July 9th, 10th, 14th and 21st sessions are well over 7ft – that’s big, heavy, expert-only water.
Stay safe, keep an eye on the tides, and I’ll see you in the lineup.
Rusty.
