The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at North Bar. To be honest, it’s a pretty patchy run ahead. There’s a long dry spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up. Most of the next week and a half is just small, weak, and messy, with a lot of onshore or cross-shore rubbish. The water is running a bit colder than usual for July, about 68°, so you’ll want a good steamer.
First real chance comes Monday morning, July 20th. Glassy conditions early with a light 3 mph ENE breeze, and a small 3 ft south swell pushing through at 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (106), but it’s not exactly gonna light your world on fire. Still, it’s rideable and clean, and that’s the best we’ve seen so far. The afternoon holds similar with a clean cross-off breeze.
The standout in the whole window is Wednesday morning, July 22nd. This one’s got some punch. A solid 7 ft south swell, 8-second period, with a fresh offshore WSW wind at 22 mph. That’s clean, powerful, and the combined energy jumps right up to 657. That’s serious grunt for North Bar. But look, at 7 ft, it’s getting into territory where beginners might wanna sit this one out—it’s more for the experienced crew. The afternoon gets even bigger at 8 ft with energy over 1000, but the wind swings cross-off and it’s a bit raw. Still, Wednesday morning is the pick of the bunch.
Thursday morning, July 23rd, drops back to 6 ft south swell with a clean cross-off breeze—still fun, but not the peak. After that, it’s a slow fade into tiny, weak surf for the rest of the month. The first day of August shows a little bump: Saturday morning, August 1st, with a 3 ft south swell, 7-second period, and a moderate offshore breeze. The energy is 103, so it’s just about surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
Overall, if you’re keen, aim for the 22nd and 23rd. The rest is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
