The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what North Bar has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it's looking pretty grim. We've got a long stretch of flat, weak conditions. From now through the 22nd of July, it's mostly tiny dribble with combined swell energy barely scraping into double digits (10-15). There's a fleeting pulse on the afternoon of Monday the 20th, with a 3ft south swell showing up, but it's only 8 seconds and the energy is still weak (107). The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year.
The first real sign of life comes on the afternoon of Wednesday the 22nd of July. A solid 8ft south swell rolls in, with a period of 9 seconds and the combined energy jumping to 992. That's a moderate to strong pulse. The wind is fresh offshore from the SSW, which will clean it right up. But, at 8ft, this is edging into expert territory—it's going to be a handful for the average punter. It's only a marginal call, so keep your expectations in check.
After that, it drops back down again. The 23rd of July morning has a 6ft south swell, but the wind is onshore from the NE, so it'll be a messy onshore mess. Not worth it.
We go through another long flat spell right through the end of July. The next chance of something surfable pops up on the morning of Friday, the 31st of July. There's a 5ft south-southeast swell, but the wind is a fresh onshore breeze from the NE at 19 mph, so it's a total write-off. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 6ft, but the wind is cross-onshore from the ENE, making it choppy. The combined energy is 217, so there's some power there, but it's just not clean.
The best of the bunch, and the only real standout in this whole murky outlook, is the morning of Saturday, the 1st of August. We get a 3ft south swell coming in with glassy conditions. It's small, but it'll be clean and rideable. The combined energy is 125, so it's got a little bit of push. It's not a big day, but glassy conditions on a small swell are a treat after this dry spell. Unfortunately, the swell period is only 6 seconds, so it'll be a bit weak and lumpy.
After that, it's back to tiny, weak windswell for the rest of the forecast period. The afternoon of the 2nd of August has a fresh offshore wind, but the swell is only 2ft, so it's barely a ripple.
So, to sum it up: a long flat spell, a big but gnarly pulse on the 22nd of July for experts only, and then a small, clean morning on the 1st of August that's the best bet for a few fun, small waves. Crowds are possible at North Bar, but with this outlook, you might have it mostly to yourself.
Rusty.
