The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Let’s be honest—North Bar is looking pretty flat and forgettable for the first week and a half. You’re looking at about a 10-day gap with hardly any real surf to get excited about.
The first faint pulse arrives on the 19th of July: a 4ft south swell with a short 6-second period, combined energy of 103 (moderate). The wind is cross-on in the morning, but the afternoon cleans up with a light cross-off. Still, it’s a poor wave. Not worth paddling out for.
On the 21st of July afternoon, the swell jumps to 6ft from the south, period 8 seconds, energy 429 (strong). The wind is cross-off and clean, but the call is marginal—so it’s a maybe.
The real standout is the 28th of July. Tuesday morning brings a 6ft south swell with an 8-second period, energy 536 (strong), and a light offshore wind from the WSW. Clean, solid, and punchy. Tuesday afternoon holds at 6ft, still offshore, energy up to 931 (strong). This is the best window of the whole 16 days. For beginners, 6ft is right on the edge, but intermediates will be stoked.
The 26th of July afternoon is also a good one: 5ft south swell, 7-second period, energy 306 (strong), with a moderate offshore wind. Clean and fun.
The 29th of July afternoon serves up another 6ft south swell, 9-second period, energy 504 (strong), and a moderate offshore wind. Good, clean waves again.
Water temperature here is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
North Bar is a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed, and crowds can pop up sometimes. The best swell direction is east, but these south swells will still work with the winds on offer.
The 30th of July morning finishes strong: 6ft south swell, 8-second period, energy 460 (strong), with a light cross-off wind and clean conditions.
So, if you’re keen, the last week of July is where the action is. The first ten days? Not much to talk about.
Rusty.
