The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We've got one spot on the radar, North Bar, but it's a tale of very slim pickings. The water temp is sitting right around the average for this time of year, 72°, so at least the rubber isn't a must.
Looking at the whole 16-day stretch, the surf diary is mostly empty pages. We've got a short window of small, rideable waves early on, and then a long stretch of nothing but onshores and tiny lumps. The first real chance is on Monday the 18th. Tuesday morning the 18th is your best bet, with a clean, glassy 3ft of S swell. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's rideable. The combined energy is weak, so don't expect much push. The afternoon cleans up with a light offshore, but it drops to 2.5ft.
Wednesday the 19th drops off fast to a gutless 2ft. From Thursday the 20th through to the following week, we're looking at a proper dry spell. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross, and there's nothing worth suiting up for. We're talking about a solid week of flat, blown-out conditions at North Bar. The only thing that even gets my heart rate up is the end of the month, around Thursday the 27th. There's a pulse of longer-period SE swell, but it's still only 2-2.5ft, and it comes with a strong offshore wind. The energy picks up a bit, but that wind makes it a battle just to get out, even for the intermediates this place suits.
The bottom line is, if you're desperate for a wave, Tuesday morning the 18th is the pick of a bad bunch. Anything after that until the 27th isn't worth your time. If you have to get wet, it's more of a kite-surfing week than a wave-riding one.
