The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at this, my fellow surfers. North Bar is in a bit of a dry spell, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The first week and a half is a total bust. You’ll be staring at a flat ocean. From the 19th of August right through to the 29th, it’s just not happening. The swell is tiny, like 1 to 2 feet, with short periods, and the wave energy is weak, often in the low double digits. The wind is a mixed bag, but it doesn’t matter because there’s nothing to ride.
The water temp is about 72°, which is normal for the season, so at least you won’t freeze.
Then, on the 30th of August, Sunday, there’s a flicker of hope. The wave energy picks up to 92 (moderate), and the wind goes light. The swell is still small, about 2 feet from the SE with an 8-second period. It’s clean, but it’s just “surfable,” not epic.
The real window, the only one worth talking about, is the 31st of August, Monday. That’s your best shot. The morning kicks off with 2 to 3 feet from the SSE, a 9-second period, and a light offshore wind from the SW. The energy is 116 (moderate). Then the afternoon is even better: 3 to 4 feet from the SE, still 9 seconds, with a moderate offshore breeze. The energy bumps up to 206 (moderate). The offshore wind is the key here—it’ll keep the faces clean. The swell is coming from the SE, but the break likes an E swell, so it’s a bit off. Still, for an intermediate surfer, it’s the best you’re gonna get in this 16-day stretch. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might see a few others out there.
After Monday, it all goes pear-shaped again. Early September brings onshore winds and choppy, lumpy conditions, even if the energy readings are moderate. The wind just ruins it.
So, mark your calendar for the 31st of August. That’s your day. The rest of the forecast is a write-off. Don’t count on anything else.
