The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what North Bar’s got in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, we’re looking at a pretty flat start to the period. The first few days are a write-off with tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. Wait until Wednesday the 22nd of July – that’s the first real glimmer of hope. Wednesday morning sees a 7ft south swell, period of 8 seconds, with a clean offshore wind from the WSW at 12 mph. The water’s sitting at 67°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year (3° cooler than average). The combined energy is moderate (572), so there’s some punch there. By Wednesday afternoon, the swell bumps up to 7ft, still from the south, period 9 seconds, and energy jumps to 747. The wind shifts to a cross-offshore, keeping it clean. This is the standout of the whole outlook – solid, clean waves for intermediate surfers. Beginners might find it a bit too much over 5ft, but experienced crew will be stoked.
Thursday the 23rd of July drops off. Morning has a 5ft south swell, but it’s blown out by onshore wind from the NE at 6 mph. Afternoon sees the swell shrink. Friday the 24th offers a little something in the afternoon – 3ft from the ESE, period 7 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze. It’s super ordinary, but you could get a few gutless ones. The weekend of the 25th and 26th remains small and messy.
The following week is mostly flat. There’s a slight uptick on Thursday the 30th of July with a 6ft east-northeast swell, but it’s only 6 seconds of period and the wind is cross-offshore, keeping it clean but weak. The energy is moderate (262). The real last chance for anything decent comes on Friday the 31st of July. Morning has a 6ft east-northeast swell, period 8 seconds, energy 385, with a cross-offshore breeze. The afternoon drops to 5ft east swell. The forecast says marginal – it’s worth a look if you’re desperate, but it’s not the Wednesday session.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak surf through the start of August. Monday the 3rd of August afternoon has a 4ft south-southeast swell, period 7 seconds, energy 138, with a clean offshore wind – surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Overall, the clear winner is Wednesday the 22nd of July. That’s the day to be in the water. The rest of the window is mostly small and forgettable, with a few ordinary days scattered in between.
Stay keen, Rusty.
