The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what North Bar is serving up for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be honest, it’s a pretty lean stretch, with a lot of flat, wind-chewed days to sort through. The start of the period has the best look, but even then, it’s no hero.
We kick off on Tuesday, the 18th of August, with a small, clean window. The morning is glassy with a light NE breeze, and the water temp is about 72°, which is normal for this time of year. The swell is a modest 3ft out of the SSE, with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (102). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon cleans up with a gentle offshore from the SW, though the swell drops a little. It’s a longboard or funboard session, just to get a paddle in.
From Wednesday the 19th through to the end of the month, it’s a rough patch. The swell drops right off, the wind turns onshore or cross-shore, and we get a string of days with poor surf conditions. There’s a gap of over a week where you’re really not going to find anything worth paddling out for. The energy is weak, and the wave heights just can’t get it together.
The one real standout in this whole outlook sneaks in on Friday, the 28th of August. The afternoon session is the pick of the bunch. We’re looking at a clean 5ft swell out of the south, with a 9-second period. The wind goes light and offshore from the SSW, which is going to put some nice lines on it. The combined energy jumps up to a solid 390 (moderate-strong), giving it some real push. This is the best wave of the forecast period. It’s a solid intermediate level, so the bigger sets will be too much for beginners. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have a few others out, but with conditions this good, it’ll be worth sharing.
The following Saturday morning, the 29th, gets wrecked by a moderate cross-onshore wind, making it choppy and messy. The rest of the run into early September is a mix of onshore slop and small, inconsistent energy, with a few hints of very long-period, clean but tiny groundswell. Nothing to get excited about.
So, bottom line: if you’re keen, make the call for Friday the 28th afternoon. That’s your window. The rest is a bit of a write-off.
Rusty.
