The Lowdown
Alright, let me break this down plain and simple. North Bar is looking pretty dead for the next couple weeks. Nothing worth cancelling plans over. You’ll get a small window to wet the board, but it’s not what I’d call a swell.
Your first real chance is Monday the 24th of August. In the morning, there’s a weak 4ft south swell with a short 7-second period. Combined energy is 134 – that’s only moderate. Wind is blowing cross-off from the west at 9 mph, so it’s okay but the waves are small and weak. By afternoon the wind turns offshore from the southwest at 12 mph, but the swell drops to 3ft and energy goes down to 105. Faces will be clean, but you’re lucky to get a proper ride. This is the best of a thin window.
After Monday, it’s mostly tiny. Near the end of the month and into early September, we get a couple long-period groundswells – like a 1ft, 14-second south-east swell on the 1st of September, and a 1ft, 18-second one on the 31st of August. Long periods mean they’ll wrap, but the size is so small you need a big board and low expectations. Most of these have energy under 100, so it’s a tease. Winds stay clean or light offshore at times, like on the 2nd of September with a 1ft south-east swell and a light cross-off breeze. That’s a “maybe” session, not a solid bet.
From the 6th of September on, it’s flat or trashy. A 2ft north-northwest swell with a 4-second period shows up, but the wind is blowing onshore from the north-east at 19 mph. That’s choppy, messy, and more for kite-surfing than paddling.
Bottom line: If you’re keen, Monday the 24th of August afternoon is your best shot for the cleanest, smallest wave on offer. Otherwise, it’s a pretty empty forecast. But who knows – forecasts change, and it won’t stay dead forever.
