The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. I’ve chewed through the numbers for the next 16 days, and it’s a tough one for Richardson Beach. There’s no surf worth paddling out for in the entire outlook. The first bump shows up on the morning of Tuesday, 14 July, but it’s a bust. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the WSW with a short, weak 6-second period and a combined energy of 151 (moderate). The wind is a cross-on at 15 mph, so it’s choppy and messy. That afternoon, it gets worse – 6ft, still WSW, 7 seconds, 249 energy, but a fresh 19 mph cross-on wind making it lumpy. That’s more of a kite-surfing scene than a paddle.
From Wednesday, 15 July, things drop right off. The swell height crumbles to 1ft and 2ft, periods are pathetic at 4 to 5 seconds, and the combined energy barely registers (13 and 6). The wind does lighten up, with a cross-off breeze on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, but the swell is just too small to do anything with. Thursday, 16 July, has a 1.0ft, 2-second wave in the morning – that’s barely a ripple. The rest of the week is a dead zone. Friday, 17 July, morning is glassy but flat, with no swell at all. Saturday and Sunday, 18–19 July, are hopeless, with tiny 1.0ft waves and onshore or cross-onshore winds. The combined energy is 2 or 0.
From Monday, 20 July, right through to Wednesday, 29 July, it’s a full blank. No swell heights, no periods, zero combined energy. The wind is mostly light or moderate, occasionally glassy, but without any waves, it’s a lake. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual. Honestly, mate, there’s not a single standout or even a mediocre session in the whole 16-day window. The gap of no surf begins on the 15th of July and stretches all the way to the end of the forecast. This area can go quiet, and this is one of those stretches. Forecasts can change, but right now, leave the boards in the shed.
Rusty.
