The Lowdown
Alright, let’s size this up in feet. The next 16 days at Chicahauk are pretty grim overall. You’ve got a good four or five days at the start with barely a ripple, and the first time you could even think about paddling out is Thursday morning August 27th. That’s a 1ft ESE swell with glassy conditions, but it’s weak and short-period—just barely surfable.
The week drags on with similar knee-high junk until Monday August 31st when a long-period groundswell rolls in: 18 seconds from the east, 1ft, combined energy 135 (moderate). Offshore wind from the WSW at 12 mph keeps it clean, but that tiny size with such a long period means it’ll be fat and hard to catch on a sandbar.
Best of the whole stretch is Tuesday afternoon September 1st. Swell bumps to 2ft from the east, period 14 seconds, combined energy 247 (solid moderate), and the wind goes glassy—just 3 mph from the west. That’s a magic window: clean, small, and workable on a longboard. Water temp is about 83°F, a touch warmer than normal. That afternoon is the standout.
Thursday morning September 3rd has another clean window: 3ft ESE swell with a 12-second period, combined energy 342, and a stiff 12 mph offshore from the WSW. Clean face, decent push—probably the biggest clean wave of the period.
After that, Saturday September 5th sees the biggest swell of the run at 4ft from the ESE with 530 combined energy (strong), but the wind is cross-onshore from the SE at 12 mph, so it’ll be choppy and hard to enjoy. Sunday the 6th is smaller and wind-affected.
Second week ends with Monday September 7th: 2ft ENE swell, glassy from a light north wind, but combined energy only 80—very weak.
Bottom line: if you want the cleanest, prettiest little wave, aim for Tuesday afternoon September 1st at Chicahauk. Otherwise, this is a long, flat, ordinary stretch, and that’s just how it goes here sometimes. Forecasts can change, but right now there’s not much to rave about.
