The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a bit of a quiet stretch ahead. The first real chance to get wet won't be until Thursday the 27th of August, and even then it's a slow start. The overall pattern is small, and we're looking at a long gap of nothing much before that. From now until Thursday morning, there's nothing worth paddling out for – just tiny, weak surf with poor conditions.
Thursday the 27th of August is where we finally see something. At Chicahauk, the morning will bring in a tiny 1 ft swell from the ESE with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 51, so it's not going to get your heart pumping. The wind is light from the S, keeping it clean and cross-off. It's surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon turns ugly with 35 km/h winds from the SSW and moderate rain, so it's a morning-only window.
Friday the 28th of August morning is probably the best of the first week. The swell is still small at 2 ft from the E, but the period drops to 9 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 52. The real positive here is a 15 km/h offshore wind from the WSW, giving you a gentle offshore and clean conditions. It's not going to be a day of barrels, but it will be the cleanest, most user-friendly wave of the early period. Afternoon gets messy with a cross-off breeze and risk of storms.
The following week actually shows a bit more promise. Monday the 31st of August into the start of September sees a noticeable increase in swell energy. The afternoon of the 31st has a 1 ft swell from the ESE, but the period jumps to 18 seconds, a very long-period groundswell. The combined energy hits a moderate 121. The wind is a clean offshore from the WSW, so it will be tidy. That long period means the waves will have more shape and power, but for a sandbar break like Chicahauk, it might break a bit too straight. Still, it's the most interesting window.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning continues the trend with a 2 ft ESE swell, 14-second period, and a combined energy of 157 (moderate). The wind is light cross-off from the NW, keeping it clean. This is a solid option for a glassy, long-period groundswell session.
The standout in the whole forecast is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning has a 2 ft ESE swell with a 12-second period and a combined energy of 172 (moderate). The wind is light from the S, giving you a clean cross-off. This is the best combination of swell size, period, and wind we see in the entire 16 days. It's the one to circle on the calendar. The afternoon holds up similarly with a 2 ft swell and a gentle cross-off breeze.
After that, it fades out. Thursday the 3rd of September drops off to a 2 ft swell with a combined energy of 80, and then the rest of the forecast into the second week of September is a mix of tiny, weak, and wind-affected surf. The only real spike is on Saturday the 5th of September afternoon, when a 4 ft swell from the N appears, but it's a short-period 6 second wind swell with a combined energy of 124, and the wind is a fresh 35 km/h cross-onshore. That means lumpy, choppy conditions. It's probably more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.
So, to sum it up: the first few days are a write-off. The best window is from the afternoon of the 31st of August through the morning of the 2nd of September. Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is the clear standout. Get out there then.
Rusty, signing off.
