The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one for Chicahauk. The data shows a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with the first real chance of anything decent not arriving until Wednesday the 22nd.
We’re looking at a lot of small, weak swell for the next several days. The waves are barely there, and the wind is all over the place. The best we can say for the early part is that Sunday the 19th might have a moment in the afternoon. You’ll see a small 2ft swell from the SSE with a short 8-second period, and the wind will swing light offshore from the west. That’s a clean, rideable wave, but it’s weak and the energy is low (47). It’s a summer knee-slapper, not a standout.
The real peak of the window comes on Wednesday the 22nd. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the SSE, still short period at 8 seconds, but the combined energy jumps to 217 (moderate). The wind is blowing fresh offshore from the SW, which will groom the surface nicely. This is the best session on offer, even though it’s not a classic. The afternoon holds the same quality, with a 4ft swell and clean cross-off winds. It’s still only rated as “poor” by the data, but it’s the best we’ve got.
After that, the wind goes onshore and the quality drops. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th have fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions, with swell heights around 3ft to 5ft. The period is short and the energy is dishwatered. The rest of the window into early August is a mix of onshore wind and small, weak swell, with nothing to write home about. The water temp is about 81°F, which is normal for the time of year.
So, to sum it up: if you’re desperate, hit Sunday morning the 19th for a clean but tiny wave. The real call is Wednesday the 22nd – get out there early for the best chance at a clean, offshore groomed wave. The rest is a long gap of nothing worth chasing.
Rusty.
