Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. The outlook for Chicahauk is a tough one to start. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak surf with very ordinary conditions for the next week and a half. The first surf that’s even worth mentioning isn’t until Friday morning, July 10th, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. The wait is real, nearly eight days of hardly any push.
Right now, through the first week, it’s a sea of nothing. Tiny waves, messy winds, and low energy. The water temp is sitting at 77°F, which is about average for the time of year. Not a heater, not a chiller, just normal.
The first hint of something showing up is on Friday morning, July 10th. We’ve got a little pulse of swell coming from the SE at 3ft, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined swell energy is moderate at 114. The wind is offshore from the SW at 6 mph, so the morning session will be clean. This is the best on offer in the whole run, but it’s still just surfable, not epic. The set-up at Chicahauk is a sandbar, and with that short period, it’s not going to have much push.
As we move into Saturday morning, July 11th, the swell holds at 3ft from the SE, period 9 seconds, and light offshore wind from the WSW again. Energy is still moderate at 112. Another clean morning, but still just small.
Then we get a spike on Wednesday afternoon, July 15th. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the S, with a period of 7 seconds. The energy jumps to 177, still moderate, but the wind goes glassy. That’s a rare treat. But the period is short, so it’ll be a bit soft and lumpy on the face. Still, no wind is no wind.
The biggest swell of the outlook hits Thursday morning, July 16th. We’re looking at 6ft from the N with a period of just 6 seconds. The combined energy is strong at 247. The wind is offshore from the WSW at 6 mph, so technically clean. But here’s the thing – that’s a big bump in height and energy for a beach break, but with a period under 8 seconds, it’s going to be crumbly and a bit of a mess. The afternoon turns to junk with a strong cross-shore, so if you’re going, you have to be on it early. This is borderline for beginners at over 5ft, but the short period will make it tricky. For experienced surfers, there could be a few fun ones if you pick the right bank.
Honestly, the standout is Wednesday afternoon, July 15th. The glassy conditions on that 4ft S swell, even with the short period, will give you the cleanest, most user-friendly waves of the entire run. It’s not big, but it’s clean, and in a dry spell like this, that’s gold. Crowds are possible here at Chicahauk, but on a Wednesday afternoon with small swell, you might have it quiet.
So to cap it off: this is a period of waiting. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of it, except for that brief glassy window. Forecasts can change, but right now, we’re in a slump.
Rusty.
