The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the forecast for Chicahauk, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. This is a sandbar setup, exposed to the east, and for the next week and a half, we’re just not getting the goods. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and when there is a little bump, the wind is usually stuffing it up or the conditions are just messy.
We start off on Tuesday the 14th with a tiny 3ft easterly swell, but it’s a weak onshore ENE breeze at 6 mph. The water is sitting at 84°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a bath. But the surf is just poor. That sets the tone. Wednesday and Thursday are flat with 1ft dribble, and while you get some clean, offshore mornings, there’s no power behind it. The wave energy is pathetic, barely hitting 30 (30). Friday and Saturday are even smaller, with 1ft and 0.7ft, and the wind is swinging around to a messy cross-shore. It’s a wasteland.
Then we get a bit of a pulse from Sunday the 19th through Tuesday the 22nd. Swell heights nudge up to 3ft, but it’s short-period stuff at 8 seconds. The energy jumps up a bit – you’ll see readings like 147 (147) on Sunday morning – but the quality is still “very ordinary.” You’ll get some clean windows with the WSW offshore wind, like Sunday morning and Monday morning, but the waves are weak and crumbly. It’s surfable, but it’s not exciting. The combined energy is moderate, but it’s just not translating into good shape.
After that, it’s back to tiny surf and bad wind. We get a few days of onshore NE and ENE wind, some rain, and even a risk of thunderstorms around the 24th and 25th. The swell picks up a little on Friday the 24th – 4ft to 4ft – but it’s from the ENE with a terrible period of 5-6 seconds, and the wind is onshore or cross-onshore. That’s a messy, choppy combo. The energy is moderate (114-140), but it’s not for paddle surfing; that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing.
There’s a long gap of no real quality. From the 14th all the way to the 19th is basically flat or poor. Then we get a few days of mediocrity, and then back to poor conditions from the 22nd onward. The only real standout, if you’re desperate, is Sunday the 19th morning at Chicahauk. It’s the best on offer – 3ft of SE swell, 8-second period, clean with a gentle offshore WSW wind at 9 mph. The energy is moderate (147). It’s not great, but it’s the cleanest and most surfable window in the whole 16 days. Don’t expect much.
The second week is a write-off. Tiny, weak, and messy. This is a tough run for Chicahauk. Usually, it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, the forecasts are looking pretty grim.
Stay patient, Rusty.
