The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Chicahauk has cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
I gotta be honest, the start is a real bummer. From Saturday the 22nd right through the end of August, it’s flat city. The swell is tiny, mostly 1 ft to 2 ft, and the wind is all over the place. We get a few glassy moments on the 24th, 26th, and 27th, but the wave energy is so weak it’s barely a ripple. The combined energy tops out at 65 on the 27th morning – that’s weak. You’d be drifting. The water temp is a highlight though: 84° on the 22nd, and that anomaly of 5°F means it’s much warmer than normal. Good for a float, not a surf.
The first sign of life pops up on Monday the 31st of August. The swell starts to build, but it’s a messy 3 ft windswell from the NE with a period of 6 seconds. The energy jumps to 149, but it’s still poor conditions with onshore wind. Not worth the paddle.
Now, here’s the one true standout. Circle Tuesday, September 1st. The morning brings a solid 5 ft swell from the ENE, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is a proper 455 – that’s moderate and punchy. The wind is offshore from the SW at 12 mph, which is a major positive. This is your best window. It’s clean and rideable. The afternoon gets bigger, with a 6 ft swell from the E, a long period of 13 seconds, and the energy rockets to 1390 – that’s very strong. But the wind swings cross-off from the S at 19 mph, which is a lot. For experienced surfers, that morning session is the pick.
Wednesday the 2nd of September still has some life, with a 2 ft ESE groundswell at 11 seconds and 242 energy in the morning, with offshore winds (SW at 16 mph). That’s a clean, fun follow-up, but it’s not the top call.
After that, it’s a slow fade. The energy drops, and we’re back to small, choppy, and onshore conditions through the end of the forecast. The 3rd has a clean morning with 2 ft and 77 energy, but it’s barely a ripple.
So, the bottom line: the first week and a half is a no-go. The best surf of the entire outlook is the morning of Tuesday, September 1st. That 5 ft ENE swell with offshore wind is your one and only clear winner. A few days around it are marginal, but that Tuesday morning is the one to wake up for.
Rusty.
