The Lowdown
Alright, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – Chicahauk is looking pretty flat and uninspiring for the next week and a half. The water’s sitting at 83°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s really standing out. There’s a long stretch of tiny, weak swell – mostly under 2ft – and the combined energy is barely flickering, with values like 15, 33, and 80. That’s just not enough to get excited about. The wind is all over the shop too, with onshore and cross-onshore breezes messing up what little wave there is.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t pop up until Wednesday, August 26th, on the morning session. There’s a pulse of east swell at about 2ft with a period of 15 seconds. That long period means the waves will have some shape and push, but the size is still tiny. The combined energy is moderate at 184, and with a light west wind providing clean, cross-off conditions, it’s actually surfable – just don’t expect any barrels. The afternoon goes back to poor with onshore wind.
After that, we’ve got another few days of messy, wind-affected junk. The swell does build a bit from the 28th, but the period drops and the wind stays fresh and cross-onshore, making it lumpy and choppy. By Saturday, August 29th, the swell is pushing 5ft to 6ft, but the period is a short 6 seconds – that’s windswell, and it’s messy. The winds are strong and cross, so this is more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
The one standout in the whole 16-day window is Monday, August 31st, in the morning. Chicahauk gets a clean 5ft of northeast swell, period of 7 seconds, and glassy conditions with a light north wind. The combined energy is moderate at 206. The swell direction is east-northeast, which is a bit off the optimum east, but the clean conditions make it worth a look. The short period means it’ll be a bit crumbly on the sandbar, but for a beach break, there’ll be some fun little waves. It’s a good option for intermediates, but the size is manageable for beginners too. Just be aware that crowds are possible here.
After that, the swell fades again and the wind turns messy. So, if you’re keen, circle Monday the 31st. The rest of the run is a bit of a write-off, but that’s not unusual for this area during a quiet spell.
