The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get real about Chicahauk.
First off, brace yourself for a long dry spell. From Wednesday the 15th right through to Saturday the 25th, it’s flat as a pancake. We’re looking at swell mostly around 1ft, with wave energy in the toilet (combined energy of all swells directed here as low as 12 to 88). The wind changes, but the swell is so small you can’t do a thing with it. Saturday the 18th is the worst, with a tiny 0.6ft and combined energy of all swells directed here at only 11. It’s a real waiting game.
Things get a little interesting on Sunday the 19th. A 3ft SSE swell shows up, but the wind is cross-on in the afternoon. The morning, with a light WSW offshore, is your only window. The combined energy of all swells directed here is still only 82. You might get a few lumpy ones, but don’t expect much.
The real action starts on Sunday the 26th of July. The swell jumps to 5ft from the SSE, with a solid offshore wind from the west. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits 255 – that’s real power. This is the standout. The wind is clean and offshore, so the waves will have some shape. At 5ft, it’s getting into the intermediate zone, and beginners might want to sit this one out.
Then, on Wednesday the 29th, we get the best of the whole forecast. The swell is 6ft from the SSE, with a light, clean offshore wind from the NW. The combined energy of all swells directed here is 345 – that’s the big one. The sandbar at Chicahauk should be firing with clean, lined-up waves. For the experienced crew, this is the session to circle on the calendar.
So, the long and short of it: sit through the flat spell. The 26th and 29th are your only real chances. The 29th is the top pick, with the biggest swell and the best wind. Just be warned, 6ft is not for the faint of heart, but for the guys who know what they’re doing, it’s going to be a proper day.
Rusty.
