The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a bit of a quiet stretch ahead for Chicahauk, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board.
Right now and for the next several days, the surf is really struggling. We’re looking at tiny, weak waves around 1 foot from the ESE with a short period of 8-9 seconds, and the combined swell energy is barely registering (30). The water is sitting at 83°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s nice for a swim but not for a proper surf. The wind is light and offshore Wednesday morning, but the waves are just too small to get excited about. This poor run of tiny surf and ordinary conditions will last through the rest of the week and into the weekend.
There’s a bit of a pulse coming in on Sunday the 19th. The morning sees some clouds and a 3-foot swell from the SE, with a moderate offshore wind from the SW cleaning things up. The combined energy bumps up to 97, so it’s still weak, but it’s a step up. The best bet, and the only true standout in this whole 16-day window, is Tuesday morning, July 21st. That’s your window. We’ll have a 5-foot swell from the S, with a moderate offshore wind from the SW again. The combined energy hits 253 (moderate), and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the one to aim for. The wind will be clean, and the size will be fun for intermediate surfers. Just keep in mind that the swell period is short (8 seconds), so it’ll be a bit peaky and won’t have the punch of a groundswell. Crowds are possible here at Chicahauk, so get there early.
After that, the forecast drops off again. The next couple of weeks are mostly filled with onshore winds, small waves, and poor conditions. Tuesday morning, July 30th, offers a glimmer with a glassy 1-foot wave from the ENE and a longer period of 10 seconds (78 combined energy), but it’s really just a small, clean bump. It’s surfable, but ordinary.
So, to sum it up: the next week is a write-off until Tuesday the 21st. That morning is your best shot at a decent session. After that, it’s back to small, messy conditions for a while. Stick with it – it’s a fairly consistent spot, so it won’t stay flat forever.
Rusty.
