Alright, let’s talk about Chicahauk.
Look, straight up, this isn’t exactly a classic run of surf. We’ve got a few windows where it’s surfable, but it’s not gonna have you calling in sick. The overall pattern is small, with the swell barely ticking over, and the winds are gonna make things tricky more often than not. We’re looking at a real mixed bag of conditions.
The best bet, and I mean the only real standout here, is the morning of Friday, July 3rd. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the ESE, but the key is that offshore wind from the SW at just 6 mph. It’s clean, it’s glassy, and the water is 77°F – that’s pretty much right where it should be for this time of year. The energy is weak, only 44 (combined energy of all swells directed here), but for a longboard or a funboard, that morning session will be pure therapy. It's a sandbar break, so expect it to be a bit fat, but those light offshores will keep the face smooth. Crowds are a possibility here sometimes, but on a tiny morning like this, it’ll be mellow.
After that Friday morning, things go downhill fast. The rest of that day, and pretty much the entire weekend, are a write-off. The wind swings onshore and cross-shore, and the swell stays tiny and weak.
We get a few other mornings that are “surfable but very ordinary.” Tuesday, July 7th morning has a little 1ft ESE swell with a solid 12 mph offshore wind from the WSW. The swell period is 10 seconds, so there’s a bit of push for its size, but it’s still just knee-high at best. The combined energy is only 45. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to get excited about.
Thursday, July 9th morning is similar – 1ft with light offshore winds. Again, clean but tiny. The afternoon sees a bump to 2ft but the period drops to 7 seconds, so it’ll be weak and crumbly.
The best morning of the second week is probably Tuesday, July 14th. We’ve got 2ft from the SE with 9-second period and a gentle 9 mph offshore wind from the WSW. The combined energy is 81 – the highest of the whole run – but we’re still talking about waves that are barely waist-high on the sets. It’s clean, though.
After that, Friday, July 18th morning has 2ft with a moderate 16 mph offshore wind from the WSW. It’s clean, but the swell is still small and weak.
Honestly, for the rest of the period, the swell is just too small and the winds are mostly poor. There are long gaps of days where you wouldn’t even bother paddling out. If you’re desperate, the Friday morning and the Tuesday morning in the second week are your only real chances for a clean, if tiny, wave.
Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
