The Lowdown
Alright, I’m Rusty, and I’m looking at the surf ahead for the next couple of weeks at Chicahauk. Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t a classic run. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf with pretty ordinary conditions. The water’s sitting at a warm 83°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re just going for a dip.
The first real hope I can see doesn’t pop up until Wednesday, the 26th of August. The morning shows a little 2ft swell from the NE, with a short period of 5 seconds, and light cross-offshore winds. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The combined energy is only 42 (weak), so don’t expect much push.
Then we’ve got a gap with nothing really worth paddling out for until Friday the 28th of August. That morning, we’ve got 1ft from the ESE, 9-second period, with a moderate offshore wind from the SW. The energy is a bit better at 52 (still weak), and it’s clean, but it’s still just small and ordinary.
The next real standout, and the best on offer, is looking like Sunday the 30th of August. The morning sees 4ft from the NE, with a short 6-second period, but the wind is cross-offshore from the SSW giving clean conditions. The combined energy jumps to 243 (moderate), so there’s some actual weight behind it. The afternoon picks up a touch more at 5ft from the NE, same short period, energy at 283 (moderate), and still clean. This is your best window for the whole forecast – it’s the biggest swell, and with the clean wind, it’ll be the most fun. But remember, with that short period, it’ll be a bit crumbly, and the swell direction is from the NE, while Chicahauk is best with an E swell, so it’s not an ideal angle.
After that, Monday the 31st of August drops back to 4ft from the ENE, but the wind turns cross-onshore from the NNE, making it choppy and messy. The energy is still moderate (202), but the quality drops right off.
The rest of the run into early September stays small, with poor surf conditions and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. The energy climbs a bit on the 1st and 2nd of September (up to 276), but the wind is all wrong – NE winds creating chop and poor shape.
So, to sum it up: the window around Sunday the 30th of August is your best bet for a surf, but it’s not a classic. The rest of the time is flat or messy. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a bit of a quiet spell, but it’ll turn around eventually.
Rusty.
