The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what we've got for the next couple of weeks.
First off, the honest truth: the surf window for Chicahauk is looking pretty bleak. We’re talking tiny, weak swells and a whole lot of flat spells. For the first few days, through the end of August and into the start of September, the waves are basically non-existent. There's a gap of several days where you'll be hard-pressed to find anything worth paddling out for. The water temperature is running about 3° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a bath, but that’s about the only highlight.
We do get a little flicker of life starting on Wednesday morning, September 2nd. The swell bumps up to 2 ft from the ESE with a 10-second period. The combined energy is still weak (65), but the wind finally plays ball with a clean, offshore breeze from the WSW. This is the only session in the entire 16-day run that gets any kind of recommendation, and even then, it's described as very ordinary. It’s surfable, but you'll be working for scraps.
On Friday morning, September 4th, there's another brief moment with a 2 ft swell from the ENE and a clean offshore wind from the SW, but the period drops to a short 6 seconds and the energy is low (36). It's a small, weak wave for a log or a longboard if you're desperate.
The bottom line? There’s nothing here that stands out as a good session. The swell is tiny, the energy is weak, and most days are plagued by onshore or cross-onshore winds. For the most part, the setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, with the cleanest winds often being too strong for the small waves. If you've got to get wet, keep your expectations on the floor and hope the forecasts change.
