Table - best surf conditions forecast for Chicahauk over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for Chicahauk.
First thing you need to know: the surf is going to be a real struggle for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long, patchy run of small, weak, and mostly blown-out conditions. There’s no standout session in the whole 16-day window, so keep your expectations low.
The first sign of anything rideable comes on the morning of Thursday, July 9th. We’re looking at a tiny 2ft NE swell with a period of just 7 seconds. The wind is a light SSW breeze, cross-off, so it’ll be clean. But the combined wave energy is a weak 79, and the swell is short-period and small. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. The water is a warm 82°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
After that, we drop off into a real flat spell. From Friday, July 10th right through to the 19th, it’s mostly 0.7ft to 2ft, with a lot of onshore wind and hardly any energy. There are a few mornings with offshore wind, like Friday the 10th and Wednesday the 15th, but the swell is so tiny it’s barely worth paddling out for. The energy readings are often in the 20s and 30s, which is just weak.
The next bit of size comes on Monday, July 13th, but it’s a mess. A 5ft ENE swell rolls in with a 7-second period, and the wind is a fresh NE onshore at 19 mph. There’s a risk of thunderstorms. The energy jumps to 302 (moderate), but the conditions are poor—lumpy, cross-onshore, and not clean. That theme continues through Tuesday, July 14th, with the swell holding around 4ft to 5ft, but the wind stays fresh and onshore. It’s a no-go for a paddle surfer unless you’re into a choppy battle.
The only real bump in the second week comes on Monday, July 20th, with a 4ft NE swell, but the wind is cross-onshore again. Then on Tuesday, July 21st, we get a bigger 6ft NE swell with a 6-second period, combined energy of 247 to 263 (moderate), but it’s all onshore wind. That’s a bit of size, but with the short period and onshore wind, it’s going to be lumpy and messy. This is really only for the hardcore or someone who doesn’t mind a beatdown.
The best of a bad bunch? Honestly, if you’re desperate, the Thursday morning, July 9th session is the cleanest, with that light cross-off wind and 2ft swell. It’s small, but it’s the only time you’ll get a clean look. The bigger swells on the 21st are too wind-affected. For a beginner, anything over 5ft is too much, and the 6ft on the 21st is only for experts.
There’s a long gap of really poor surf from the 10th to the 19th, with very little to recommend. This is a spot that can be inconsistent, and this run is a perfect example. It’s a fairly consistent break overall, so it won’t stay this bad forever, but for now, the forecast is what it is.
Rusty.
