The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with your 16-day look at Chicahauk. Let’s be honest, it’s a quiet stretch ahead, so don’t get your hopes up for anything firing. The water here’s sitting at 83°, which is a touch warmer than usual for the time of year.
We’re looking at swell under 3 ft for the entire run, with tiny, weak energy most days. The first week is pretty much a write-off. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Wednesday the 28th, it’s all poor surf conditions with waves only 1 ft to 1 ft. Combined energy is low, in the 20s and 30s (like 23 to 50). You’re not missing a thing.
Thursday the 27th morning and Friday the 28th morning are the closest we get to something rideable, with 2 ft of east swell, periods around 8-9 seconds, and a light offshore or cross-off breeze keeping things clean. But honestly, it's still very ordinary surf. The combined energy is a feeble 63 and 51.
The gap of proper fun surf continues through to the end of August. The morning of Monday the 31st sees a pulse of long-period 18-second energy from the east, but the wave height is only 1 ft. The combined energy bumps up to 81, but there’s just no size to work with.
We finally see a bit of life kick in as we move into September. On Tuesday the 1st, the swell picks up to 2 ft from the east with a 15-second period, and a light offshore wind from the west in the morning. The combined energy hits a moderate 197, and while it’s still just “ordinary,” it’s the best we’ve seen. That trend continues into Wednesday the 2nd, with 3 ft of east-southeast swell and a 12-second period. The morning is clean.
The standout window is definitely the morning of Tuesday, September 1st. It offers that little bit more size (2 ft), a nice long period groundswell (15 seconds), and light offshore wind. It’s the most promising session in this forecast, with combined energy at 197. That slight increase in size and the clean wind makes it the pick of the bunch.
Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th morning hold a little more size at 3 ft to 3 ft, but the winds go onshore or cross-on, killing the quality. The 267 combined energy on Saturday the 5th morning shows there’s some moderate energy, but it’s too lumpy and choppy. Honestly, that setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Beyond that, the 7th and 8th of September are just more small, blown-out junk with onshore winds. A pretty flat outlook, but forecasts can change. Keep an eye on that Tuesday the 1st.
Rusty.
