The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. This is a tough one to call. We’re looking at a long, dry spell before anything even gets close to surfable.
For the first week and a half, it’s pretty much a write-off. From Sunday the 19th right through to the morning of Saturday the 1st of August, we’ve got next to nothing. The swell is tiny, the wind is all over the place, and most days the conditions are just plain poor. You’d be looking at a long stretch of flat-to-messy water. It’s the kind of window where you’d be better off checking the tides for a beach walk.
The first real hint of life comes on Monday the 27th of July. Chicahauk is your only option. Monday morning, the wind goes glassy, and the water is flat calm. The swell is a tiny 2ft from the ESE, with a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is weak (48). The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is about as generous as it gets. It’s not going to be a classic, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 82°F.
Then we get another gap. The next flicker of hope is on Thursday the 30th of July. The offshore wind is light, from the West at 10 km/h, and the swell is still only 2ft, but it’s clean. Again, the energy is weak (44). It’s the same story: "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions."
The last chance in the window is the morning of Saturday the 1st of August. It’s glassy, with a dead calm wind, but the swell is a paltry 2ft from the ENE with a period of only 5 seconds. The energy is weak (69). The comment is the same – "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions."
Honestly, there’s nothing here that screams "standout." The best on offer is the morning of the 27th of July and the 1st of August. If you’re a beginner, even the 5ft mark isn’t hit, so it’s safe, but it’s also not very exciting. The combined energy values are all in the double digits, so it’s weak everywhere. For a more experienced surfer, this is a period to sit out. The forecast can change, but right now, it’s a long wait for a very small reward.
