The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the surf window at Trestles (Lowers) for the next couple of weeks.
The first few days are a struggle. From Friday the 21st of August through the middle of the following week, it’s small and messy. A lot of light cross-onshore breezes are putting a bit of texture on the surface, making it choppy and lumpy. The swell is tiny, mostly 2 feet to 2 feet, and the energy is weak to moderate. Friday morning is the only real possibility, with a light breeze and an offshore wind, bringing 2 feet of SSW swell at 13 seconds. The combined energy is only 247 – it’s marginal, but at least it’s clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Tuesday the 25th has a bit more energy, with the combined swell energy hitting 414 in the morning and 455 in the afternoon, but the cross-on wind is still there, and the waves are still only 2 feet to 2 feet. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
The first real standout is the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. The swell picks up to a solid 5 feet from the S, with a period of 13 seconds. The combined energy is a moderate 948, and the wind is light and offshore, making for clean conditions. It won’t be huge, but it’ll be clean and lined up.
Thursday the 27th afternoon is another one to circle. We get 5 feet of SSW swell with a 14-second period, and the combined energy climbs to 965. The wind is light and offshore again, so the surface will be glassy. This is a proper session for the advanced crew, as the size is just over the beginner-friendly mark.
The rest of the first week and into the second week is a bit of a lull. The swell drops back to 3 feet to 4 feet from Tuesday the 1st of September, but the wind stays mostly light and offshore, keeping it clean. The energy is moderate, bouncing around 300 to 500. It’s not great, but it’s not terrible.
The absolute highlight of the entire 16-day window is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. This is the one. The swell is 3 feet from the S at 16 seconds, and the wind is glassy – completely flat, offshore, no ripples. The combined energy is a strong 944. This is going to be perfect. The crowd profile at Trestles is always crowded, so you’ll want to be out there early.
The final day, Saturday the 5th of September morning, brings the biggest swell of the forecast: 6 feet from the S at 14 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 1386. The wind is light and offshore, keeping it clean, but the size is pushing into expert territory. For the experienced surfer, this is a fantastic way to end the run.
So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly a wash. The clear standout is the morning of Friday the 4th of September for the glassy perfection, and the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August for the bigger, clean swell. Don’t count on much else.
Rusty.
