The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the next 16 days for Trestles (Lowers). It's a bit of a slow burner, but there's a promising pulse of bigger swell on the horizon if you're willing to wait.
Right now, the water is a balmy 70°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus, but the surf? It’s pretty flat and weak. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at small, weak southwest swells, mostly under 3 ft, with a combined energy reading barely cracking 200-300 at times. The wind is a bit of a bummer, too – it’s cross-on, mostly from the south or west, which is going to keep things a little choppy. The wave comment is "poor" or "marginal" for nearly every session. Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet stretch.
We see a bit of a bump on the morning of Sunday, July 19th, with 4 ft from the S at a 12-second period. The energy jumps to 812 (moderate), and the wind is light from the WSW. It’s still a "marginal" call, but it’s the first sign of life. Then Monday, July 20th through Tuesday, July 22nd, we’re stuck back in the 3 ft to 4 ft range with the same cross-on wind issues. The consistency is very good here, but the quality just isn't there.
The real standout window starts to show up on Friday, July 24th. The swell is finally building. By the morning, we’re looking at 6 ft from the S with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1384 (strong). The wave comment is still "marginal" due to a light cross-on breeze, but we’re getting closer.
The best bet on offer, if you’re an expert, is the morning of Saturday, July 25th. That’s the one. The swell peaks at 8 ft from the S, with a period of 14 seconds. The energy is a massive 2897 (strong). That’s proper groundswell power. But, and it’s a big but, it’s over 8 ft, so this is expert territory only. The wind is a cross-on from the west at 9 mph, which will put some chop on the face. For a wave that big at a beach-and-reef setup, it’s going to be a bit of a wrestle. The period is a solid 14 seconds, so it’ll have some push, but that cross-on breeze might make it less than perfect. Also, keep in mind that this place is "always" crowded, so on a Saturday with a solid swell, expect a full lineup.
The swell drops quickly after that. By Sunday, July 26th, we’re back to 3 ft from the SSW, but the period jumps to 19 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The energy is still strong at 1251. The wind is light onshore in the morning. That long period will make the waves peel nicely at a point like Trestles, but it’ll also mean long lulls between sets.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off. The standout is the morning of Saturday, July 25th, for the biggest swell of the run, but it’s only for experts and the wind isn't ideal. If you’re looking for cleaner conditions, the morning of Sunday, July 26th, offers a better chance with light winds and that long-period groundswell, even if it’s smaller.
Rusty.
