Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Well, I’ve got to be straight with you – this 16-day run for Trestles (Lowers) is a tough one to call. It’s a classic spot, a beach and reef setup that’s very consistent and exposed to the SW, and when it’s on, it’s world-class. But right now, we’re looking at a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions. The water’s sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real glimmer of anything rideable doesn’t pop up until Tuesday, July 7th. Things are pretty grim before that – July 3rd through the 6th is just a write-off, with small, weak swell and cross-onshore breezes ruining any chance of a clean wave. The combined energy is barely climbing past 650 on the 6th, which is only in the moderate range.
So, for Tuesday, July 7th, we finally get a bit of a pulse. The morning sees a 4 ft SSW swell, with a very long period of 18 seconds, and the wind goes light and offshore from the SSW. The wave energy is moderate, sitting at 822. That long 18-second period groundswell means the waves will have real shape and power, and the light offshore will keep ‘em clean. It’s still a marginal call – a 2 out of 10 in the guidance – because the swell size isn’t huge, and long period swells can sometimes be a bit tricky on a beach-break setup like this, mostly wanting to stand up and dump. Still, if you’re keen and you know the lineup, this is the pick of the whole forecast. The afternoon holds similar conditions with a light cross-onshore.
Wednesday, July 8th follows a similar pattern. The morning gives us a 4 ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and light offshore from the SW. The energy is moderate (873). It’s still just on the edge of being good, but Tuesday morning has the cleaner window.
After that, it’s back into the doldrums. From July 9th right through to July 18th, it’s a long, flat, and windy grind. The swell drops under 3 ft, periods shorten, and the wind stays mostly cross-onshore. The wave energy falls into the weak to moderate range, with many days below 300. The best you can hope for in that second week is a marginal session on July 18th (Saturday), with a 3 ft SW swell and a light cross-onshore, but the energy is still moderate. It’s a lot of paddling for not much reward.
To be honest, this is a period where you’d be better off finding something else to do. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing if the wind picks up. For the rest of us, keep your eyes on Tuesday, July 7th – it’s the only real standout, and even then, it’s a marginal one.
Rusty.
