The Lowdown
G'day, surfers. Rusty here with a look at the next couple of weeks around Trestles (Lowers). To be honest, it's a slow start, and we've got a bit of a wait on our hands before things get interesting. We're looking at a solid week of small, messy surf before a more promising window opens up later on.
The water temp is sitting at a nice 71°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won't need a thick suit.
We kick off Thursday the 20th, and it's pretty grim. Swell is tiny, around 3ft from the SSW, with a cross-on breeze making it choppy. The wave energy is a weak 289, and honestly, it's not worth paddling out. This sort of poor quality continues right through the week. From Friday the 21st through to Tuesday the 26th, the swell stays under 3ft, with cross-onshore winds pretty much all session. There are a few sessions early on the 26th where the swell bumps up to 4ft, but it's still marred by that cross-on wind and a short, weak period. It's a real test of patience.
The first real glimmer of hope comes mid-week, on Wednesday the 27th of August. The swell pushes up to 5ft from the SSW, and the wind turns light and offshore from the SW. The wave energy jumps to a moderate 1037. The conditions are still a bit marginal with questionable tide, but it's the first time we've got a clean, offshore window and some size. For the advanced crew, this is the first session to circle. The following morning, Thursday the 28th, still has a bit of size at 5ft, but the wind goes back to a cross-on, which is a shame.
Then we get a bit of a run of marginal conditions, with small, cross-on swell through the end of August and into the start of September. There's a notable jump in period on the 29th, with a 3ft swell from the SSW, but a 17-second period. That's a long-period groundswell, and at a spot like Trestles, those long lines can be a bit finicky, often breaking too straight on the beach. It's something to be aware of.
The real standout, and the one that's got me a little excited, is looking like the first few days of September. Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th show a building swell. On the 3rd, we're looking at 2ft from the SSW, but with a very long period of 21 seconds! The wind is light and offshore, or very light cross-on. The wave energy is a moderate 623. The next day, the 4th, the swell builds to 4ft from the SSW, still with a long 18-second period, and the energy is cranking up to 928. The wind is light from the WNW, keeping things clean. For the advanced lads and ladies, this is the one to watch. The long period will be a dream for the point and reef sections at Trestles, giving those waves real shape and punch. Keep in mind, this is a long-range call, so it's promising but not locked in yet.
All in all, a frustrating week ahead, but the light at the end of the tunnel is a solid, clean swell window around the 3rd and 4th of September. Don't bother with the early stuff; save your energy for that.
Rusty.
