The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a slow start. The first decent bit of surf we’re lookin’ at isn’t until Thursday, August 6th, and even then it’s only just enough to get wet. Conditions are clean though, so there’s a little hope.
We’ve got the whole run at Three Arch Bay. This is a classic point break setup, and it’s very consistent, so it’ll be working even when the swell is small. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
The best window in the whole 16-day stretch is shaping up around Saturday, August 15th. That’s the one to circle on your calendar. We’ve got a solid push of SSW groundswell rolling in, with heights around 3ft, a long period of 16 seconds, and the energy is strong (462 on the Saturday morning, 524 in the afternoon). The wind is light and blowing straight onshore from the SW, which is actually the optimum direction for this break, so it’ll be clean and lined up. The period is long enough to give you proper waves, but not so long that it’s too straight to be fun. This is the standout. It’s still a friendly size for intermediates, but there’s enough push to keep it interesting. Crowds are possible here sometimes, so get there early.
The Thursday and Friday before that (August 14th and 15th) are also showing some life with similar SSW swell, but the wind is a bit more cross-on, which will mess with the face a little. Still, you’ll get some rides.
After that standout Saturday, the swell drops off quickly. The rest of the second week is pretty small and choppy. By Tuesday, August 18th, we’re back to tiny 2ft to 3ft waves with a lot of cross-shore wind, so it’s not really worth paddling out for unless you’re on a longboard and just want to stretch your arms.
Overall, the pick is without a doubt Saturday, August 15th at Three Arch Bay. If you can only make one session, make it that one.
Rusty.
