The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again with the imperial read on Corona Del Mar Jetty.

Over the next couple weeks, don’t plan your life around it just yet. The water is running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 69°F. The first several days are a struggle. From Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got tiny 1ft swell from the southwest with a long 18-second period, but the wind is light and onshore or cross, leaving the ocean bumpy and uninviting. Combined energy is only around 151, which is weak to moderate. “Poor surf conditions” is the call. Thursday and Friday stay just as small and messy.

There’s a solid four-day stretch with no real action. Saturday the 18th sees energy climb to 346-477, but with onshore and cross-onshore wind, the waves are messy little bumps around 2ft.

Light finally appears at the end of the tunnel. Sunday the 19th, we get 4ft swell from the south, lighter cross-onshore wind, and combined energy up to 697-784. Still called “marginal surf,” but you might find a few rideable ones if you’re patient. Monday and Tuesday the 20th and 21st hold around 2-3ft with light cross-shore breeze – still not clean, but better.

Wednesday the 22nd brings 3-3ft with very light cross-onshore wind. Still marginal. Thursday morning the 23rd gets up to 5ft from the south with very light onshore wind, but it’s a messy one. Combined energy is 843 – solid moderate.

Now, the clear winner – Saturday the 25th morning. It’s glassy. Wind is just a whisper at 3 mi/h from the west-southwest. Swell is 5ft from the south-southwest at 13 seconds, and the combined energy is a strong 1189. Forecast calls for “very good surf conditions.” That’s the one to chase. Crowds are likely at the Jetty, so dawn patrol it. Beginners should be careful with the size.

After that, Sunday the 26th drops back to 3-3ft with light onshore wind, and the rest of the week fades into small, marginal surf through the end of July. The second week is pretty flat.

No kite surfing here with these tiny waves and fickle winds – just paddle surfing if you’re keen.

Rusty.
