The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Corona Del Mar Jetty.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next several days are pretty flat and messy. We’re looking at a rough start. From Saturday the 22nd of August right through to Monday the 24th, the surf is poor. Small, weak swells, mostly cross or cross-onshore winds, and the wave energy is just not there. It’s a bit of a write-off.

Then we get a little glimmer on Tuesday morning the 25th. The wind goes glassy, and the swell is a clean 2 ft from the SW, with a period of 16 seconds. That’s some proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is moderate at 243. It’s small, but for a quiet, clean session it could be worth a paddle. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The rest of that week, from Wednesday the 26th right through to Sunday the 31st of August, is a mix of marginal and poor conditions. The swell picks up a bit – 4 ft to 4 ft from the S and SSW – but we’re getting onshore winds and a lot of cross-chop. The energy gets into the moderate range (between 271 and 785), but the wind just ruins the shape. Not worth getting excited about.

Now, we jump into September. The first couple of days are still poor. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell from the W jumps to 4 ft–4 ft, but the period drops to 8 seconds – that’s short-period windswell, and it’s cross-onshore. Not great.

The real standout comes later in the forecast. Friday the 4th of September through to Sunday the 6th looks like the best window. The swell builds nicely, with a peak on Saturday the 5th of September: 4 ft–5 ft from the SSE and S, with a period of 16 seconds. That’s long-period groundswell, and the combined energy is strong, hitting 1397 on Saturday morning and 1664 on Saturday afternoon. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but there’s real power in the water. The morning of Sunday the 6th holds 5 ft from the SSE, again with a solid 15-second period and energy at 1477. This is the pick of the fortnight. It’s still marginal in the forecast, but for size and energy, this is where you want to be. Keep in mind, with that long period, the waves might be a bit lined up and straight for a beach break, but the jetty structure can help focus it.

So, if you’re waiting for something decent, hang tight until that first weekend of September. The beginning of the outlook is a total dud, but the end has some real promise. That’s your window.

Rusty.
