Alright, Rusty here, let's get into it.
Alright, look, if you’re hanging around the Newport Beach area, the next couple of weeks are going to be a real mixed bag. Mostly we're looking at a long, quiet spell before the ocean finally wakes up for a couple of sessions that are worth paddling out for.
The best bet on offer is going to be Corona Del Mar Jetty. It’s a breakwater setup that’s fairly exposed to the swell, and it can handle a south-southwest wrap when the conditions line up. Right now, the water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so a spring suit should be all you need.
We’ve got a lot of flat or poor conditions to get through first. From Monday the 6th through to the end of that first week, it’s mostly junk. The swell is small, inconsistent, and the wind is just never on our side. A lot of south-west winds that are either cross-on or directly onshore, messing the surface up. The few moments of glass or cross-off winds you get from the 12th onwards are paired with tiny waves that just don't have the energy. The combined swell energy is mostly in the two to three hundred range, which is weak.
There’s a real gap through the middle of July. From the 7th all the way through, the recommendations are basically zero for surfing. A lot of marginal conditions with poor surf quality. The energy levels stay low, under 300. It’s a frustrating stretch for sure, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Now, things start to look a bit more promising around Saturday the 18th. For the morning session, we’ve got a tidy clean setup with a WNW cross-off breeze, and the combined swell energy touches 319. It’s only 2 ft of south-west groundswell, with a solid 17-second period, so the waves will have some push to them. That longer period will make it a bit more lined up and easier to paddle out, though it’s not going to be a big day. The morning of the 18th is the standout – clean conditions, some shape. The afternoon is okay but the wind picks up. It can get busy there, "often" is the word, but with waves this clean and small, it might not be a zoo.
Then, fast forward to Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, we see a pulse of south swell. It’s still showing as marginal in the guidance, but the combined energy jumps into the 800s, which is moderate. The swell height is 4 ft to 5 ft coming from the south with a 14-second period. The wind is light, but from the south-southwest. On Monday, it's onshore. On Tuesday, it's a bit more side-on. It’s not perfect, but it’s the most size we’ll see in the whole outlook. This sort of height is manageable for most, but if you’re a beginner, that 5 ft day with that much energy might be a bit much.
For the week of the 13th and 14th, there’s not much to write home about. The waves are tiny, often under 2 ft, and the period drops to 12 seconds. The conditions are poor. Keep the board in the car and check the cam before you even think about a parking spot.
So, here’s the takeaway: the first two weeks are a write-off. Don't bother until Saturday the 18th morning for a clean, small wave session at Corona Del Mar Jetty. The real one to look at is Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st of July – that’s the best chance for something with a bit of push. It’s a long-range call, so be flexible, but the models are saying there’s finally some energy on the way.
Rusty.
