The Lowdown

Right. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Corona Del Mar Jetty.

Alright, it’s a bit of a slow start, I’m not gonna lie. For the first few days, into Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd, we’re looking at really small, weak stuff. Swell is only around 1ft to 2ft, and the wind is all cross or cross-onshore, messing up what little energy there is. The combined wave energy is low, between 131 and 193, so there’s just not much push. It’s poor conditions, and not worth paddling out for.

Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a similar story. The swell stays tiny, under 2ft, and the wind continues to be a problem. It’s not until Tuesday the 25th that we start to see a slight improvement. The swell bumps up a little to 2ft, but it’s still marginal. The wind is light and cross-shore, which is a help, but the wave energy is still only moderate (around 376). It’s not great, but it’s getting closer.

Now, the real potential starts to show towards the end of the first week and into the second. From Wednesday the 26th, the swell picks up. By Thursday the 27th afternoon, we’re looking at 5ft of SSW groundswell, with a period of 13 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 668. The wind is light cross-onshore, which is a bit of a shame, but it’s not too bad. That’s the best of the first week, but it’s still only a 2 out of 10 on the quality scale.

The standouts, the ones that have me a little excited, are the very end of the forecast. Looking out to Friday the 4th of September, the swell is building nicely. By Friday morning, we’ve got 4ft of SSE swell at 16 seconds, and the energy is strong at 1119. The wind is light and onshore, but the period is long. That’s a bit of a caveat for a setup like this – it’s a breakwater, so a long period swell can make it a bit tricky, but it also means more power. The wind looks better Friday afternoon, going light and cross-shore.

Then, Saturday the 5th of September, this is the best on offer. We’re looking at 6ft of S swell at 14 seconds, with a very strong combined energy of 1400. The wind is a light cross-onshore, which is pretty clean. That’s a decent size, edging towards expert territory, but for the experienced crew, that’s the one to circle. It’s a long way out, so it’s a promising call, but definitely not a sure thing this far ahead.

Overall, the first week is a bit of a write-off for quality waves. The second week, especially the last few days, has some real potential. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
