The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the next 16 days for our local zone. The short story is: we’ve got a long stretch of flat to poor conditions before a late-period window shows some promise. There’s a big gap of days with no real surf to get excited about, so patience is the name of the game.
We start off on Monday, July 13, with a weak, small SSW swell pushing in at about 3ft. The period is 13 seconds, which is decent, but the energy is on the low side (276). The water is sitting at 68°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The wind is light and cross-shore, but the whole thing is rated as marginal – the waves just aren’t breaking with any punch. Honestly, it’s a bit of a flat, disappointing start.
From Tuesday, July 14, right through to the end of the following week, the surf drops off a cliff. We’re talking days of tiny dribble, 1ft to 2ft, mostly with onshore or cross-onshore winds. The swell periods are all over the place, but the energy is weak (often in the 100-200 range). The model is basically telling us it’s poor conditions – nothing worth paddling out for. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a dry spell, but it happens.
There’s a glimmer of hope on Sunday, July 19, in the afternoon. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the SW, with a 17-second period, and the energy jumps to 568. The wind is light and cross-shore, which could clean it up. But it’s still only rated as marginal – the tide or something else is probably messing with the shape. Still, it’s the first sign of life.
The real standout, and the only time I’d get my hopes up, is Monday morning, July 27. That’s 14 days away, so it’s a long-range promise, but it looks good. The swell is 2ft from the SW, with a 19-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The waves might be a bit straight for a beach break, but Corona Del Mar Jetty is a breakwater, so the long period could actually wrap in nicely. The kicker is the wind: glassy. Slight air, no wind. That’s the cleanest we’ll see all forecast. The energy is solid at 493. It’s a small wave, but with that period and glass, it’ll be fun and clean. The crowd factor is “often” here, so expect company, but for a morning session with those conditions, it’s worth it.
Tuesday, July 28, swings back to onshore wind and poor surf, so the window is narrow.
The pick of the period is definitely Corona Del Mar Jetty on Monday morning, July 27. Small but clean, with a long-period groundswell. If you’ve got a longboard, that’s your session.
