The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the menu at Corona Del Mar Jetty. We've got a slow start, so don't be in a rush to grab your board. The water's sitting at 72°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a nice little bonus if you do get in.
The first few days are a tough watch. Monday afternoon kicks things off with a weak 3ft SSW swell, but it's bumpy with a cross-shore wind and the combined energy is a pretty weak 332. It’s just poor out there. Tuesday through to the end of the first week are mostly marginal at best—tiny waves in the 1ft to 2ft range and mostly onshore or cross-onshore breezes. The combined energy readings are all under 200, barely a ripple. You're better off doing something else.
We hit a bit of a lull until Wednesday the 26th of August. That morning, the stars almost align. We’ve got a tiny 2ft SW groundswell (16-second period), but the wind goes glassy. That’s a major positive and will make it look clean, but the size is still tiny. The energy is still only moderate at 280. It's a window for a longboard or a foiler, but nothing to write home about.
The real story, and the only true standout in this 16-day window, starts to build late in the month. Check out Saturday the 29th of August. A solid 4ft SSW groundswell is on the cards, with a long 18-second period. The combined energy jumps right up to 931—that’s strong energy! The wind is onshore in the morning, but by the afternoon it lightens up to a light cross-onshore breeze. Sunday the 30th keeps that momentum going with a similar 4ft SSW swell, period dropping to 16 seconds, and the energy still a strong 882. The wind stays a light cross-onshore.
The downside is the onshore component, so the waves won't be perfect, but the size and energy are there. For a breakwater spot like Corona Del Mar Jetty that's fairly exposed to a SSW swell, this is the best we've got. The swell direction matches the optimum, and those long periods should deliver some decent shape. It's not for beginners at that size, and expect some company—the crowds are listed as 'often' here. Friday the 28th shows a jump in energy, but with onshore wind, it's a write-off.
After that, the swell fades into the first of September, dropping back down to unremarkable, weak surf. So, to put it simply: don't bother this week. Keep your eyes on Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August. That’s your window for the best waves on offer, even with a little bump on the surface.
Stay salty.
Rusty.
