The Lowdown
Yo, it's Rusty here. Let's be straight with you about the surf at Corona Del Mar Jetty. The next 16 days are looking pretty flat, and honestly, a bit of a struggle. We've got a long stretch of poor surf conditions, so don't be expecting to charge. The water is running at 69°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing your toes off.
The first few days, Thursday the 16th through Saturday the 18th, are a write-off. We're looking at tiny 1ft to 2ft of weak, long-period SW swell. The combined wave energy is weak to moderate (128 to 364), and it's mostly onshore or cross-onshore, even if it's light. The wave comment is "poor surf conditions" across the board. Not worth paddling out for.
Now, things start to look a little more interesting on Sunday, July 19th. We get a bump in size to 5ft, with a longer period of 14 seconds from the S. The combined energy jumps to 1200, which is solid. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSW, so it's not perfect, but it's rideable. The wave comment only says "marginal" though, so manage expectations. This swell hangs around through Monday and Tuesday with 5ft to 5ft, but the wind stays cross-onshore, keeping it a bit choppy. This is the best you're going to get in the first week, but it's not a standout.
The swell drops back to 3ft by Wednesday the 22nd, and the wind gets uglier with a moderate cross-shore. The rest of the week is back to the poor stuff.
The second week shows a bit of a pulse again. Friday the 24th sees a new S swell at 5ft with 14-second periods, and the combined energy is strong at 1205. But again, the wind is cross-shore and there are rain showers, making it messy. Saturday the 25th offers 5ft to 4ft with light onshore winds, which is cleaner, but still only marginal.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the period from Sunday the 26th to Tuesday the 28th. The swell hangs around 3ft to 4ft, but the period is a very long 18-19 seconds from the SW and SSW. That's proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong (868 to 1052). The wind is light and cross-onshore or even cross-shore, which should keep the surface clean. For a jetty, that long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely, offering some decent shape. This is your best bet in the whole 16-day window, but it's still a long-range call, so stay flexible.
After that, the swell fades quickly into the end of the month, with the last day of July showing only 2ft and a weak energy.
So, to sum it up: the surf is poor for the first several days, then marginal through the end of the first week. The highlight is the long-period groundswell from the 26th to the 28th, which is your best chance for a clean, fun session. It's nothing epic, but it's the best we've got.
Rusty.
