The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a proper look at what’s coming our way.
Corona Del Mar Jetty is a breakwater setup that’s fairly exposed to the swell, and it likes swell from the SSW. Right now, we’ve got a run of pretty underwhelming conditions stretching out. The water is sitting at 72°, which is a solid 5° above the norm for this time of year – so it feels much warmer than usual for mid-August.
The first decent look doesn’t come until Sunday afternoon, August 16th. Swell is small, only 3 ft from the SSW with a nice long period of 15 seconds – proper groundswell. The combined energy is 356, so moderate, but the wind is cross at 9 mph, so there’s a bit of cross-chop. It’s surfable, but not clean. The rating only calls it poor surf conditions, so I wouldn’t rush.
Monday the 17th might offer a small window early morning with 3 ft SSW swell, 14-second period, and a light cross breeze (6 mph) – combined energy sits at 302. It’s marginal at best. Afternoon gets a little bumpier. Tuesday the 18th drops to 2 ft and stays marginal through the morning. That trend pretty much holds all the way to Thursday the 20th, where winds turn more onshore and the swell is still tiny – 2 ft and dropping.
We go through a flat spell from Friday the 21st all the way into the following week. From 2–1 ft, poor conditions, and very weak combined energy dropping to just 119 on Saturday the 22nd. There’s a slight flicker on Sunday the 23rd with 1 ft and a very long 19-second period, but that’s just a tease – still poor.
The next halfway decent chance comes on Tuesday the 25th morning: 2 ft from the SW with a 16-second period, combined energy 322, and a light cross breeze. That’s marginal, not standout, but probably the cleanest window in the second week. After that it fades again.
The end of the month – Saturday the 29th – brings a small push: 3 ft from the SSW, 17 seconds, and combined energy up to 476. The wind is light but onshore that morning, so it’s still marginal at best. Morning of Sunday the 30th has 3 ft again, 15 seconds, 364 energy, but again onshore wind.
There’s nothing here that I’d call a true standout. The best bet in the whole 16-day run is probably Tuesday morning, August 25th: 2 ft SSW groundswell with a 16-second period, cross breeze at 6 mph, and combined energy of 322. It’s clean-ish and the longer period means better shaped waves, but this break isn’t a point break – it’s a breakwater setup, so don’t expect perfection. Crowds are often a thing here. The water will still be warm and unusual for late August.
Otherwise, it’s a whole lot of waiting. This jetty is a fairly consistent spot, so it’s a bit of a bummer to see so many poor and marginal days stacked up. It won’t stay flat forever, but right now the forecast is a long, quiet run.
Stay patient, and keep checking back.
Rusty.
