Table - best surf conditions forecast for Corona Del Mar Jetty over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the table for our stretch of coast. To be straight with you, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and forgettable. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell and less-than-ideal wind, so most days are going to be a write-off for a proper paddle. The real interest doesn't show up until the very end of the month, and that's the one to circle on the calendar.
Let’s start with Corona Del Mar Jetty (Newport Beach). The water is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus. But for the next several days, it’s a grind. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are basically no-go with poor surf conditions and a light cross-onshore breeze messing up what little is there. The swell is tiny, around 2ft to 3ft, and the combined energy is weak (295 to 647). That’s just not enough push.
Monday the 20th through to the end of the week is a dead zone. We’re looking at waves that are marginal at best, with the swell staying under 4ft. The wind is light and cross or cross-on, which is about the only positive, but the energy is still low (342 to 489). This is a stretch where you’d be better off doing something else. The whole week from the 18th to the 24th is just a blank run for any decent surf. The crowds are often around here, but honestly, nobody is going to be fighting for these scraps.
Now, hold on. The one thing that has my attention is Friday the 31st of July. The swell finally kicks up with a solid 6ft from the south with a 15-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 1509. That’s the kind of number that gets your heart pumping. The wind is looking light and cross, which should keep things clean. This is a standout for the whole forecast. It’s a bit of a wait, and it’s a long-range call, so we’ll need to keep an eye on it, but this is the one to get excited about. The 6ft is getting into expert territory, so it’s not for the groms.
Saturday the 1st of August still has some decent leftover swell at 6ft, and the wind stays light, but the period drops a bit. It’s still a good option, but the Friday is the real prize.
So, to sum it up: things are dead quiet for a solid week and a half, then the end of July and start of August bring the only real swell window. The setup at the Jetty with a south swell and light wind is about as good as it gets around here. Stay patient.
Rusty.
