The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our local stretch.
The honest truth is, the next 16 days are a bit of a flat spell for Laguna Beach. We've got a long stretch of nothing much happening, with the first real chance of a wave not showing up until Monday the 20th, and even then it's marginal. We're looking at a solid week of clean skies but very little surf energy to work with.
Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th are write-offs. The water is a touch warmer than usual at 69°, but with swell coming in at just 2ft from the SW and a very long period of 18 seconds, there's no power behind it. The combined energy is weak (252), and that light cross-onshore wind is just messing with the surface. You're better off saving the petrol.
Monday 20th sees a slight bump. The morning swell picks up to 4ft from the SSW with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy rises to a moderate 322. It's still a marginal call, but it's the first hint of something. The wind is light and onshore, so don't expect perfection.
Tuesday 21st through to Thursday 24th is more of the same. Swell stays in the 2ft to 3ft range, mostly from the SSW. The wind stays light, but it's always cross-onshore or onshore, keeping the surf a bit grovelly. The combined energy fluctuates but never gets exciting. The biggest day for energy in this period is Saturday the 25th, with a combined energy of 967 on the morning, but the swell is still only 3ft and the period is a very long 21 seconds. That kind of long period groundswell on a reef point like Laguna Beach? It might just wrap in and offer a clean, lined-up wave, but it's a gamble. The light cross-onshore wind might just be light enough to keep it glassy.
Sunday 26th and Monday 27th are similar, with combined energy around 900 and swell around 3ft to 3ft. The wind is still light, and the period is still long (18-19 seconds). This is all marginal, but it's the best we've got this far out. It's one of those periods where you need to be watching the forecasts closely.
Then we hit a dead zone. Friday 31st July through Saturday 1st August shows zero swell. A complete flat spell.
Sunday 2nd August gives a final gasp, with a 4ft SSW swell and a short period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is a moderate 296, but the wind is light and cross-onshore. It's another marginal one.
So, to be straight with you, there's no standout session in this 16-day window. The only real candidate for a paddle is going to be the Monday 27th July morning, if you're keen to chase a clean, long-period wave. The swell is 3ft from the SSW, the period is a very long 19 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 868. The wind is light and cross-onshore, but if it stays glassy, that long period swell could offer some nicely lined-up sets on the reef. It's not going to be pumping, but it's the closest thing to a decent wave we've got.
For the rest of it, keep the board in the car and the wax in the bag. The wind is just too light and variable, and the swell is just too small and long-period to make anything of it. The water is a touch warmer than usual, but that's about the only positive.
Rusty out.
