The Lowdown
Alright, conditions at Laguna Beach are gonna be pretty slow for a spell. It's that time of year where the surf goes quiet, and that's exactly what we're looking at. The first week and a half are a total washout.
So here's the deal. Starting Thursday, August 20th, and running through the end of the month, it's flat and sad. We're looking at tiny, weak swell, mostly 1 to 2 feet. The wind is a messy cross or onshore breeze, and the word is just "poor surf conditions". The combined wave energy is weak, barely hitting triple digits. You'd be better off doing something else than sitting in the lineup.
Moving into the start of September, things get a bit more interesting, but not for surfing. On the 1st of September, a short-period swell bumps up to 3 or 4 feet from the West, but the wind is howling from the SSE at 15 mph, making it choppy and poor. This setup looks way more fun for a kite surfer than for someone with a paddle. The combined energy is moderate at best.
Then we hit another dry spell from the 2nd of September morning. It's back to tiny, weak surf from the SW.
But listen up. The standout session for the whole forecast is shaping up on Friday, the 4th of September. For the first time, we have a promising combo. A groundswell from the SSW at 3-4 feet with a very long period of 18 seconds will be wrapping into the reef here. The wind is forecast to be light from the SE, giving us a clean, off-shore breeze, and the word for the afternoon is "expect very good surf conditions" with "clean" conditions. The combined wave energy is strong (747). That long period will mean better-shaped, more powerful waves. The water temperature is around 70°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. Just be aware, the crowds are *often* here, so you won't be alone for this one.
After that, the forecast gets hazy again with only marginal calls, so that Friday the 4th is your target. Paddling out will be easier with the longer gaps between sets from that long-period groundswell.
Rusty.
