The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Laguna Beach. This reef break is exposed to a WNW swell, but the outlook is mostly a dud for the next week and a half. The water is running a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, at 68°F, but that’s about the only good news.
We’re looking at a long, flat spell from now until the 21st of July. The combined wave energy is weak, the wind is either cross or onshore, and the swell is small, under 3ft from the SSW. It’s all poor conditions, so don’t bother paddling out. The crowds are often here, too, so it’s not a fun wait.
The first chance of a wave comes on the morning of Monday, the 21st of July. The swell comes in at 3ft from the SSW, with a period of 16 seconds—that’s a solid groundswell. The combined energy hits 428 (moderate), and the wind is a light cross-onshore breeze. It’s only marginal, but it’s something. The long period at a reef should give you some clean lines, but expect other surfers in the water.
The real standout is Monday morning, the 27th of July. The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the SSW. The swell is a clean 2ft from the SW, with a very long period of 18 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 493 (moderate). It’s small, but it’s smooth. That long period will make the waves fat and slow, perfect for a log. The crowds are often there, so be ready to share. The afternoon turns onshore, so hit it early.
The 25th of July brings a bigger 4ft SSW swell, but it’s ruined by a moderate cross-onshore wind, making it choppy. That’s a kite-surfing day, not a clean paddle session.
Bottom line: the glassy morning of the 27th is your only real winner. For the rest of the 16 days, it’s a lot of waiting.
