The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Laguna Beach has on the cards for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a bit of a slow start with small background energy, but there's a glimmer of something better further down the line if you’re patient.

Right off the bat, the water temp is sitting at a warm 71°, which is 4° warmer than usual for this time of year—so that’s noticeably toasty for your first paddle out. That initial energy we have on Tuesday the 18th is a tiny 2ft of swell coming from the SSW, but with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s the kind of groundswell that needs a focused break to wrap into. Problem is the combined energy is weak (331), the winds are light onshore, and conditions are poor. The reef here needs direction to line up, and this isn’t it for now.

We cruise Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th with more of the same: small wave heights around 2–3ft, long periods still, but mostly messy with cross-onshore winds and even smaller energy readings. Nothing worth paddling for. We see that poor quality persist right through the weekend and into the following week. A lot of days are a write-off with constant on or cross-shore breezes and a whole heap of micro-swell that’s just not enough to push through cleanly.

There is a gap of poor to marginal surf until we reach Saturday the 29th. That’s when we finally see a wee pulse of life. On Saturday morning, the swell bumps up to 4ft from the SSW with a period of 17 seconds and combined energy climbing to a moderate 614. The breeze is cross-onshore, but the winds are only light, which could still offer some clean-ish lines. Saturday afternoon looks similar with 4ft and energy up to 626, winds becoming light onshore. This is the standout for the whole outlook—still not perfect, but by far the best energy in the window and the most hope for a few walls on the reef.

Sunday the 30th holds on with similar 4ft swell, still solid period at 15 seconds, and energy in the 400–500 range. Winds are light cross-shore in the morning then light onshore later. That is probably your second-best chance.

After that, it fades back to small, marginal slop into the start of September. No big standout beyond the 29th and 30th.

So if you’re keen, pencil in Saturday the 29th for a look. It’s not pumping, but it’s the most promising stretch we’ve got. The reef might just hold some shape if those winds stay light. Otherwise, it’s a few more weeks of waiting.

Rusty.
