The Lowdown

Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. Looking at this 16-day window, it’s gonna be a grind for most of it. We’ve got a long stretch of small, wind-affected surf that’s going to test your patience more than your paddle strength. The keys are gonna be patience and picking the absolute right moments, because they are few and far between.

We’re looking at a solid run of days with no real surf on offer. From now until at least the morning of Monday the 24th, it’s looking pretty grim. Small southwest swells, mostly in the 1ft to 2ft range, with a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind. You’d be fighting a bumpy, weak ocean for nothing. The energy is minimal, with the combined energy values mostly sitting below 200, which is weak. Don’t waste your petrol.

The first faint glimmer of hope shows up on Monday morning the 24th at Laguna Beach (Laguna-Beach). The swell ticks up slightly to 2ft from the SSW with a period of 14 seconds, and the energy climbs a bit to 333. It’s still marginal, and the forecast is questionable, but it’s the first sign of life. The wind is light and offshore though, which will keep it clean. If you’re desperate, that’s your window, but keep your expectations in check.

The following days up to the 27th are more of the same—weak, messy, and unappealing.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. The models are showing something with a bit more push for the end of the month. The real standout in this whole period looks to be the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. We see the swell jump to a clean 3ft from the SSW with a period of 17 seconds, and the combined energy surges to a strong 675. This is a proper groundswell. The wind is light and offshore, which is exactly what we want. This is your best bet for a proper surf. The waves will have some push, but it’s not too big for the intermediates out there.

The morning of Sunday the 30th also has potential, with a 3ft SSW swell and a period of 15 seconds. The energy is still strong at 464, but the wind will be cross-onshore, so it won’t be as clean as Saturday. It’ll still be worth a look, but Saturday morning is the pick.

From there, we slide back into another lull. The first week of September looks like a holding pattern with not much on offer. There are some pulses of energy here and there, like the afternoon of the 3rd of September seeing 370 on the board with a 2ft SSW swell, but the poor surf conditions just keep killing it. The winds stay tricky. The morning of the 4th of September has a 3ft SSW swell with 393 energy, but again, the wind is cross-onshore, messing up the potential.

Bottom line: don’t hold your breath for the next week. Wait for that Saturday the 29th morning window. That’s the one. It’s got the size, the period, and most importantly, the offshore wind to make it glassy and clean. It’s a promise of better things to come.

Stay patient, keep your board waxed, and I’ll see you out there when it turns on.

Rusty.
