The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a look at the charts for Laguna Beach and honestly, it’s a bit of a flat spell. This reef break is usually fairly consistent, but the next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet. The water is sitting at 69°F – a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which would be nice if there was any energy to go with it.
Right off the bat, Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th – nothing doing. Tiny 1 ft to 2 ft SW swell, mostly cross or onshore breezes, and the wave comment is poor. Not worth paddling out. Monday the 20th shows a marginal 3 ft swell in the morning with light onshore wind, but still only just clinging to life. Tuesday the 21st morning bumps up to 4 ft from the SSW, period 12 seconds – that’s the biggest we see early on, but the wind swings westerly and it’s cross-onshore by afternoon. Combined energy hits 757 (moderate), but the wind kills it. Not a stand-out.
The pattern stays poor through Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd – small swell, onshore wind, poor conditions. Then Friday the 24th morning has a long-period 2 ft SW groundswell (24 seconds) but again poor surf conditions – that sort of period needs a clean offshore to really link up, and here it’s just cross-onshore.
The best chance in the whole window pops up around Saturday the 25th through Monday the 27th. Saturday morning the 25th shows 3 ft SSW swell with light cross-onshore, combined energy 992 (strong moderate), and the wave comment is marginal. Sunday the 26th morning has 3 ft SW, 19 seconds, energy 950 – still marginal but the winds are light. Monday the 27th afternoon sees the highest energy of the period at 1182, with 4 ft SSW at 19 seconds, light cross-onshore. That’s probably the pick, but it’s still only marginal. Swell direction is SSW, while this reef really wants WNW – so it won’t wrap in perfectly. And with the crowds here often, even a tiny window won’t be empty.
Tuesday the 28th onward fades back to poor or marginal at best, with heights dropping to 3 ft and energy dwindling. By August 1st we’re back to tiny 2 ft and no love.
So, to be straight with you – there’s no true standout session in this 16-day run. The closest is maybe the morning of July 27th (Monday) with that 4 ft SSW swell and light wind, but it’s a gamble. If you’re desperate, wait for that window. Otherwise, keep an eye on the forecast – it never stays this flat for long. I’m Rusty.
