The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for this stretch at Poche Beach. To be honest, the outlook is pretty flat and uninspiring for the first week and a half. We’ve got a long stretch of weak, short-period windswell with messy cross-onshore winds, so don’t expect much to get excited about until the very end of the run.

The first real chance of anything decent comes in the second week. On Monday, September 21st, we start to see a little bump. The morning has a 3ft swell from the southwest, with a period of 17 seconds – that’s a proper long-period groundswell, which brings real energy. The combined swell energy is moderate at 607. The wind is light and variable from the SSW, turning onshore, so it should be clean. That afternoon, the swell picks up to 3ft with the same 17-second period, and the energy ticks up to 673. The wind stays light from the SW, so conditions should be glassy. This is the best on offer for the whole 16 days.

Then on Tuesday, September 22nd, the morning holds 3ft from the southwest, 16-second period, with moderate energy (444). The wind is light from the WSW, giving a clean light cross-onshore. After that, conditions slip back into choppier, cross-onshore wind.

The last real standout is Friday, September 25th in the afternoon. A 2ft southwest swell, but with a very long 20-second period. That’s a serious groundswell pulse. The energy is a moderate 524. The wind is light and onshore from the WSW, so it’ll be clean. For a beach-and-reef setup like this, that long period will shape up nicely, though it might be a bit too straight for the beach section. Keep an eye on it.

Water temperature is 70°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

Overall, the first week is a write-off. The best windows are those two afternoons on the 21st and 25th of September. Not a lot of size, but with those long periods and light winds, it’ll be worth a paddle if you’re keen. Crowds are often around here, so be ready for company.

Rusty.
