The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about Newport Point.

Look, I'm gonna be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet around here. We’ve got a long stretch of small, underwhelming swell and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. It’s not the kind of period that gets you jumping out of bed, but there are a few moments where things might just come together for a session.

For the first several days, from Monday the 3rd through to the end of the first week, we’re looking at tiny swells. Nothing over 3 ft, mostly from the SW or SSW. The period is a mixed bag, some longer 16-19 second groundswell pulses, but the energy is weak – mostly in the 81 to 330 range. The problem is, the wind is often on it or cross-onshore, so the surface is just not clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual to report.

The real stand-out, the best window we’ve got, is actually on Saturday afternoon, August 8th. The swell bumps up to 2 ft from the SSW, with a period of 16 seconds. The combined energy hits 314, which is still moderate but the best we’ll see for a while. The winds go light and onshore, which is a major positive – it’ll be glassy. This is the one moment where the conditions are described as "marginal" rather than "poor." It’s your best shot for a small but clean wave. Newport Point is a point break, so that longer period (16s) should wrap in pretty nicely along the reef. It’s an advanced spot and it’s often crowded, so expect company.

The following week, from the 11th onwards, stays pretty similar. The swell stays small, between 2 ft and 3 ft, with a lot of cross-onshore wind. The energy picks up a bit on Friday the 14th with a 410 reading, but it comes with a 12 mph cross-onshore wind from the W, making it choppy. Not worth a paddle.

Bottom line: if you’re keen, clear your Saturday afternoon of the 8th. It’s the only real window of clean, small waves we’ve got. For the rest of the 16 days, it’s a long, drawn-out flat spell. It won’t stay poor forever, but for now, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
