The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the first solid recommendation we’ve got doesn’t kick in until the 29th of August. Before that, it’s a whole lot of not much – small, choppy, and poor conditions through the 23rd to the 28th. The water’s running about 71° right now, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus for the body, but the waves just aren’t there.
The first real chance to get wet comes on the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. Huntington Cliffs is looking at a 0.9m (3ft) SSW swell, with a long period of 17 seconds (groundswell), and the wind is light and *on* from the SW. That offshore breeze should keep the surface clean. The combined swell energy is moderate (577). It’s a fairly consistent beginner spot, and this setup looks like a quiet, glassy morning session – just be aware it can get crowded here, so you might have some company. It’s marginal, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a while.
Sunday the 30th of August morning is similar, with a 1.0m (3ft) SSW swell, 15-second period, and a near-slight breeze from the SSW. The energy is still moderate (542), and it’s another morning that could clean up nicely. Not a standout, but a decent option.
Now, let’s talk about the end of the run. The 3rd of September morning sees a 0.7m (2ft) SW swell with a very long 19-second period, and the wind is light but cross-on from the W. The energy is moderate (634). That’s a long period, so the waves will have proper shape, but at a beach break like this, it can break a bit too straight. Worth a look if you’re a patient surfer.
The best of the whole forecast, if it holds, is the morning of the 5th of September. Huntington Cliffs has a 1.2m (4ft) SSW swell, 17-second period, with a light cross-on breeze from the SSW. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1359. That’s real energy in the water. The swell direction is a good match for the spot’s optimum (WSW), and the wind is light enough that it’ll be clean. For a beginner spot, 1.2m (4ft) is a fun size, but with that power, it’s getting a bit more serious. This is the standout window – promising, but it’s over a week away, so keep your fingers crossed.
The 6th of September morning pushes up to 1.5m (5ft) from the S with a 14-second period and a cross-on SSE breeze. The energy is strong (1381). That’s getting into the size where it’s not ideal for learners, and the wind is onshore-ish, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. The afternoon of the 6th has a 1.7m (6ft) S swell with a clean *on* wind from the SW – that’s the best wind of the day, but 1.7m (6ft) is getting into expert territory for this break.
The 7th of September morning has a 1.7m (6ft) S swell again, but it’s cross-on with a moderate breeze, so it’ll be choppy. Not the best end to the run.
Overall, it’s a slow start, but the first week of September has some real potential, especially that 5th. Stay patient.
