The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let me be straight with you – this 16-day outlook for the Santa Ana River Jetties is a tough one. We've got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, so temper your expectations.
Starting now and running through the entire period, the story is pretty much the same. The swell is tiny, ranging from 1ft to 4ft, and it's coming from the SSW and S directions, but the real killer is the wind. For the first several days, it's onshore or cross-onshore, continuously chopping up what little wave energy there is. The combined swell energy is weak, mostly under 300 (783 on the 29th morning, dropping to 95 by the 2nd of August), so there's just no power in the water. The period is generally long, between 12 and 19 seconds, which would normally be a positive sign of groundswell, but with such small heights and poor wind, it's just not doing anything for us here at this sheltered river-mouth spot.
On Wednesday the 29th, you're looking at a 3ft to 4ft SSW swell with a long 16-second period, but the cross-onshore wind will have it looking messy. Thursday the 30th shows a slightly better 4ft S swell in the morning, but again, onshore wind ruins the party. The rest of the first week and into the second week is more of the same: tiny 1ft to 2ft swells with onshore and cross-onshore winds. The water temperature is 72° with a whopping 6° anomaly – that's much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a weird bit of trivia, but it's not making the surf any better.
There's a slight tick up in energy around the 9th of August, with the combined energy hitting 343 in the afternoon, and the swell bumping to 3ft. But it's still cross-onshore and choppy. The best of a bad bunch might be the 10th of August (Monday) afternoon, with a light onshore wind (Slight air, 3 mph from the SW) and a 2ft SSW swell. It's not good, but it's the calmest wind we see.
Honestly, there are no standout sessions here. The consistent onshore flow and tiny swell mean that for the entire 16 days, paddling out is a waste of energy. With the small, weak swell and persistent onshore wind, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
That's the picture from here. Stay tuned, forecasts can change.
