Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a hard look at what’s ahead for Terra Mar.
Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough run. The overall pattern is a long stretch of marginal to poor conditions, with hardly a window of clean, rideable surf. The swell is hanging around in the 1ft to 4ft range, mostly from the SSW, but the wind is almost constantly cross-on or onshore, which keeps things choppy and messy. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 68°.
The first few days (Sunday 5th through to Wednesday 8th) see a bit of a pulse. Swell heights bump up to about 2ft to 4ft from the SSW, with a long period of 16 to 18 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. The trouble is the wind. Sunday afternoon has a 15 km/h cross-on from the W, giving poor surf. Monday through Wednesday morning, the wind is still cross-on or onshore from the WSW or SW, even though the energy builds to a moderate 899 in the combined energy (moderate wave energy). These are not the clean waves we want. The afternoon of Wednesday 8th is the closest we get to a decent look, with a 4ft SSW swell, a 16-second period, and a light 10 km/h onshore wind from the SW. It’s still marginal, but it’s the best of a bad bunch early on. The combined energy here is 716 (moderate).
After that, from Thursday 9th right through to the end of the 16-day window, it’s a long, grinding slog of poor surf. The swell drops back to 1ft to 3ft, the period shortens, and the wind rarely lets up. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Thursday 16th with a 3ft swell from the W, but it’s a short-period 8-second windswell, and the wind is onshore at 10 km/h. That’s a no-go. The energy drops to a weak 178 for some of the afternoons.
The only standout, if you can call it that, is the afternoon of Wednesday 8th July. It’s the single best option in the whole 16-day run. The swell is 4ft from the SSW, period 16 seconds, and the wind is light onshore at 10 km/h from the SW. It’s a point break, so it can handle that long-period groundswell, and the combined energy of 716 (moderate) is the highest we’ll see with anything close to a clean look. Don’t expect miracles, but it’s the only session worth paddling out for.
For a beginner, those 4ft waves are manageable, but the lack of clean conditions makes it a tough call. There’s a gap of about 10 days from the 9th onwards where it’s really not worth looking at the ocean. The rest of the window is genuinely poor.
Rusty.
