The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
First up, Terra Mar is a point break that’s rated for beginners, fairly consistent, and exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting at 72°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a real treat, feels like a late summer gift.
Right now, we’re in a bit of a flat spell. From Saturday the 22nd right through to Tuesday the 25th, the surf is tiny – mostly 2ft to 2ft. The winds are light and mostly cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s not doing us any favours. The combined energy is weak, mostly in the 192 to 357 range, and the wave quality is poor. It’s a waiting game.
Wednesday the 26th brings a noticeable change. The swell jumps to 5ft in the morning, bumping to 6ft by afternoon, coming from the S with a period of 14-15 seconds. That’s a solid groundswell. The combined energy rockets up to 1306-1589, which is strong. Winds are light and from the SSW, so it’s clean with offshore conditions. The surf is still a bit marginal for the best shape, but it’s the first real pulse we’ve seen. The size is getting into the intermediate zone, so beginners might find it a bit much.
Thursday the 27th drops back to 4ft to 4ft, still S swell, but the period shortens to 11-12 seconds. Winds stay light and offshore, so it’s clean but smaller. The energy is moderate – around 487 to 660. Not a standout, but still a decent window for a longboard or a fun log.
From Friday the 28th through to Sunday the 30th, we hover around 2ft to 4ft, mostly from the SSW. The winds are light but cross-onshore, so the texture isn’t perfect. The combined energy sits in the moderate range, 566 to 787. It’s surfable, but nothing to get too excited about.
Then we hit a lull. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September, the swell drops to 2ft to 3ft, with poor conditions and choppy winds. The energy drops back to 275-384. Not much happening.
The real spark comes in the second week. Wednesday the 3rd of September, we see a SSW swell building to 3ft in the afternoon, with a very long period of 20 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy hits 765. Winds are light and cross-onshore, but it’s a promising sign.
Thursday the 4th and into Friday the 5th, the swell really kicks in. Thursday morning sees 5ft from the SSW, period 19 seconds, and massive combined energy of 1735 – that’s strong. Winds are light and offshore, so the setup is clean. By Friday afternoon, we’re still at 4ft to 5ft, with similar energy. This is the best window of the whole outlook. The long period suits a point break like Terra Mar, with longer gaps between sets making the paddle out easier. The size is still manageable for intermediates, but it’s getting solid.
Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th keep the momentum, with 6ft to 6ft from the S and SSW, periods around 14-15 seconds, and energy in the 1361-1572 range. Winds stay light and offshore, so it’s clean. This is big enough that only experienced surfers will be comfortable, but for those in the know, it’s the real deal.
The standout window is the 4th to the 7th of September – the swell is solid, the winds are clean, and the energy is pumping. If you can wait, that’s where the magic is.
Rusty.
