The Lowdown

Alright, listen up. Terra Mar is a point, exposed to the swell, but it’s a tough one right now. The water is 71°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual. That’s way out of the ordinary.

The first real surf shows up Monday morning, July 13th, but it’s a joke. A 3ft swell from the SSW, 13-second period, with a cross-on wind from the W at 6 mph. The energy is moderate (342), but it’s bumpy and weak. The report says poor surf conditions, and it is. The afternoon is even smaller at 2ft.

The rest of the first week is flat. Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th are tiny, with 2ft and 1ft swell, and the wind is in the wrong direction. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are the same. Don’t bother.

We finally get a pulse on Saturday the 18th. Swell gets to 3ft from the SW, with a long 18-second period. Energy is up to 422 and 464 – solid moderate. The wind goes onshore, but it’s light. Still, it’s marked as poor. It’s cleaner, but the quality isn’t there.

Sunday the 19th is the best of the first week. Swell is 3ft to 3ft, 17-second period, and the energy is 586 in the morning, jumping to 823 in the afternoon. That’s a strong moderate push. But the wind is cross-on and choppy again. It’s marginal, not good.

The one true standout, the only day I’d really plan for, is Thursday the 23rd of July. That’s the day. We get a solid 6ft swell from the S, with a 14-second period. The energy is a beast – 1340 in the morning, strong to very strong. The wind is onshore from the WSW at only 6 mph, which is light and clean. At 6ft, it’s for the experienced crew, not beginners. The period is a bit short, so it might be a little crumbly, but for a point, it should work. The afternoon is still pumping at 6ft (1107 energy). That’s your window.

After that, Friday the 24th drops to 4ft, and the wind gets messy. The weekend of the 25th and 26th is back to poor conditions with cross-on wind and chop. The last couple of days, the 27th and 28th, are a fade-out with tiny swell.

So, the first week is a total washout. There’s a tiny window of marginal surf mid-week, and one proper day of solid swell on July 23rd. The rest is just frustration. The onshore and cross-on wind are the main problem. For a point break, you want that offshore wind. This setup, with the cross-on wind and moderate swell, might actually be more interesting for a kiter than a surfer on most days.
