The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve only got one spot on the radar for this stretch, and it’s Terra Mar, a point break that’s fairly consistent. Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow start.
We’re looking at a run of surf, but the first few days are a write-off. Saturday afternoon the 18th kicks off with some small 3ft SW swell, but it’s accompanied by poor surf conditions and a score that’s just not worth paddling out for. The water is a very unusual 72°F (much warmer than normal for this time of year), but that’s about the only positive.
Sunday and Monday the 19th and 20th stay marginal. The swell nudges up to 3ft from the SSW, but the wind is cross-onshore, keeping things a bit messy. We’re looking at weak wave energy in the hundreds (456-770), so nothing with any punch.
The pattern doesn’t really improve through the middle of the week. Tuesday the 21st through Thursday the 24th sees swell hovering around 3ft to 3ft, with periods dropping into the 13-16 second range. The wind is mostly onshore, and the comments are either “poor” or “marginal.” It’s going to be a frustrating wait. The energy is still moderate, sitting in the 400-600 range.
Now, Friday the 24th afternoon brings a spike to 4ft from the S, but the period drops to 13 seconds and the wind is on. It’s still not clean.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Saturday the 25th morning. We’ve got 3ft from the SW, but check out the period: 21 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 1055 (strong), and the wind is light and onshore. This is a point break, so it’ll handle that long period much better than a beach break, but it’s still a gamble with the onshore wind. It’s the first standout of the run, but it’s not perfect.
Sunday the 26th holds similar energy at 3ft, 19 seconds, but the wind is cross-onshore, making it “light cross-onshore with small wind ripples.”
Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th mornings are the best bets in the whole window. The swell bumps up to 4ft-4ft from the SW/SSW, periods are a solid 17-18 seconds, and the wind is light and onshore. The energy is strong (1104-1150). This is Terra Mar at its most promising. For a point break, that long period will give it some real shape and power, but the light onshore wind will keep the surface a little bumpy. It’s not glassy, but it’s the best we’ve got. Crowds are “sometimes” here, so you might have some company.
After that, it starts to fade. Wednesday the 29th gets a moderate cross-onshore breeze that chops it up. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st see the swell building to 6ft-6ft from the S, with periods dropping to 14 seconds. The energy is strong (1200-1300), but it’s marginal surf. That 6ft is getting into the “too big for beginners” territory, and the shorter period will make it a bit of a wall at a point.
The first week of August sees the swell drop back down to 4ft-5ft, with the period losing its steam (11-13 seconds). The energy drops back to moderate (500-800). It’s a slow fade to the end of the forecast.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th of July, with 4ft-4ft SW/SSW swell and long periods. It’s not a world-class window, but it’s the only real moment to get a proper wave at Terra Mar. The rest is a lot of waiting.
Rusty.
