The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Terra Mar has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the overall pattern. We’ve got a stretch of pretty quiet, unimpressive surf kicking things off, with the first real chance of a wave showing up later on. The water temp here is sitting at 72°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s notable, making for a pleasant paddle.
Things start on Friday, 21 August, but honestly, it’s a scratch session with poor conditions and almost no energy (199). That carries through the weekend and into early next week. The swell is tiny, between 2ft and 2ft, and the wind is light but cross-on, leaving the surface a bit bumpy. It’s pretty frustrating, with combined energy barely cracking 400 most days.
We finally see a flicker of life on Tuesday, 25 August, with the afternoon showing marginal surf and energy hitting 373. Still, with a 2ft SSW swell and cross-on wind, it’s hardly worth paddling out for.
The first proper standout doesn’t arrive until Wednesday, 26 August. The morning sees a jump to 5ft from the south at 14 seconds, with energy climbing to 1377. It’s a moderate energy swell, but the wind is a gentle cross-on breeze, keeping things a little choppy. The afternoon gets even better, with the swell pushing 6ft at 14 seconds and a light cross-on breeze making it more manageable. This is the best on offer for the first week – a borderline big day for the average surfer, but the cross-on wind stops it from being perfect.
After that, the surf settles back into the 3ft to 4ft range through the end of August. The winds stay light and mostly cross-on, so conditions are average at best. The energy levels are moderate, hitting 844 on Saturday afternoon, 29 August, but nothing really jumps out.
Looking into the first week of September, we hit a bit of a lull. From Monday, 31 August through Wednesday, 2 September, the surf drops back to 2ft to 4ft, with mostly onshore wind and poor to marginal conditions. It’s a quiet few days.
The second standout, and the real one to watch, starts cranking up on Thursday, 3 September. The morning brings 3ft from the south at 14 seconds, but it’s the energy that’s climbing fast – 608. By the afternoon, we’re at 3ft but with energy at 857, and the wind is light and onshore, so it’s glassy and clean.
Friday, 4 September, looks promising, with the morning offering 4ft S swell at 15 seconds and energy up to 1223. The wind is a gentle onshore breeze, but the real highlight is Friday afternoon – 5ft from the south at 15 seconds, with a massive energy reading of 1525. The wind is light and onshore, meaning it should be clean. This is getting into expert territory, but with that long period, it’s going to have proper power and shape. A point break like Terra Mar should handle this beautifully.
The biggest swell of the whole window lands on Saturday, 5 September. We’re talking 7ft to 7ft from the south, with a period of 14 seconds and energy readings of 2018 and 2049. That’s strong wave energy, and the wind is light and onshore both morning and afternoon, keeping the surface clean. This is definitely expert-only territory, though – it’s going to be a beast. If you’ve got the skill, this is your day.
So, to sum it up: Wednesday, 26 August afternoon gives us a decent 6ft bump, but the true standouts are Friday, 4 September afternoon (5ft, clean, high energy) and Saturday, 5 September (7-7ft, light wind, massive energy). Crowds at Terra Mar are noted as *sometimes* an issue, so on these best days, you can expect a few others around.
Rusty.
