The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks at Terra Mar.
Alright, let’s be real. The first week and a half is a bit of a grind. We’ve got a long stretch of marginal surf, with the first couple of days being pretty lackluster. The water is a crazy 73°F, which is a solid 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, feels like a bath.
The real interest starts to build towards the end of the month. Sunday the 26th of July sees a bit of a pulse, with chest-high 3ft swell from the southwest and a solid 19-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, but with a long period like that, it’s gonna be better on the point. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 1046, and morning light offshore winds (10 km/h) should keep it clean. The crowd factor is "sometimes" here, so you might have some company.
The stand-out, though, is shaping up for Monday the 27th of July. The swell picks up to 4ft from the southwest, period drops to 18 seconds, but the energy jumps to 1132. Winds are light offshore from the SW at 10 km/h in the morning, promising glassy conditions. That’s the best call on offer. Terra Mar is a point break, and with that long-period SW groundswell hitting it, it should line up nicely. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but with the swell at 4ft, it’s still manageable for most.
The kicker comes later, though. On Friday the 31st of July, we see a bigger, more powerful swell. The afternoon brings a 7ft S swell with a 16-second period and a massive combined energy of 2088. That’s punchy. The wind is a cross-on 15 km/h from the W, which will put some texture on it. This is expert territory at that size. That same size rolls into Saturday the 1st of August, with a 7ft S swell, but the period drops to 13 seconds, and the energy is still strong at 1324. Morning winds are light offshore, so it could be a good, if heavy, session for the experienced crew.
After that, Sunday the 2nd of August, the energy drops off a cliff. The swell crumbles to 4ft with a short 9-second period, and the wind is messy. It’s a rapid fade-out into the first week of August with very little to recommend.
So, the best of the lot? Monday the 27th of July for the cleanest, most manageable waves. Friday the 31st of July for the big, powerful swell, but that’s for experts only.
Rusty.
