The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the menu for Dana Point over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the surf is gonna be pretty marginal most of the time. We’ve got a long stretch of small, mixed-up, and pretty average conditions. The first few days are tiny, with a lot of cross-onshore wind, and the models are calling it "poor" or "marginal" through the whole period. You’re not gonna find any of those perfect, glassy walls on the regular.
The water is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one small win.
The first real standout – and I mean the *only* one that gets my blood pumping – is on Friday, July 31st. We’ve got a solid 6 ft of south swell rolling in, with a clean offshore wind early in the morning (SW 3 mph). That’s glassy conditions, and the energy is strong (1325). The swell direction is right in the sweet spot for Dana Point’s optimum (WSW), and with a period of 14 seconds, it’s a proper groundswell. This is a decent setup for a point break, which is what Dana Point is. It’s a beginner-friendly break, but at 6 ft, it’s getting a little too big for true beginners. The afternoon stays clean with WSW wind, so you’ve got a good window. The only bummer is it’s a Friday, so expect the crowds to be likely.
The second-best window is the morning of Thursday, July 30th, with 5 ft of S swell, clean cross-onshore wind (SSW 10 mph), and strong energy (1467). It’s a bit smaller, and the wind isn’t perfect, but it’s the next best thing.
The rest of the run is a lot of 2 ft to 4 ft slop. The week of July 18th to the 24th is mostly small, choppy, and not worth rushing out for. The far end of the forecast, into early August, drops off fast – the swell fades to 3 ft by Sunday, August 2nd, with poor surf conditions.
So, bottom line: if you can wait, nail the morning of July 31st. It’s the cleanest, strongest swell in the whole 16-day window. The rest of it is mostly waiting for that.
Rusty, signing off.
