The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the 16-day window for Oceanside Beach, and I gotta be straight with ya – it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is pretty flat and messy, so don’t get your hopes up for any pumping sessions. The water is sitting at 73°F, which is a solid 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a real standout, almost like a summer holdover, but unfortunately the waves aren’t matching that energy.
The first real chance to get a wet suit on is Tuesday the 8th of September, but it’s a weak one. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the SSW, with a short 10-second period and moderate combined energy (539). The wind is cross-on from the WNW at 9 mph, so it’s gonna be choppy and a bit of a battle. The comment says “marginal surf” and I’d agree – it’s not great, but it’s the only game in town for the start. The afternoon gets worse as the wind jumps to 19 mph, turning it into a lumpy mess.
The rest of the first week is a write-off. Wednesday and Thursday see the swell drop to 2ft to 3ft, but the wind stays cross-on, and the periods are weirdly long – 16 to 17 seconds – which for a beach break like this means the waves will be weak and straight, not much shape. The combined energy hovers around 375 to 634, which is moderate at best, but the surf quality is poor. Friday through Sunday of the first week is all “poor surf conditions” with tiny waves around 2ft to 3ft and light cross-on winds. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out.
There’s a bit of a gap of several days with no real recommendations. The second week, from the 14th of September (Monday) onward, stays stubbornly small. The swell direction shifts to the SW and W, but the heights barely hit 2ft to 3ft, and the periods are all over the place – from 8 seconds up to 20 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (214 to 632), but the wind is either cross-on or light onshore, and the “poor surf conditions” tag keeps popping up. The best of the worst might be Monday the 21st of September, where we see a 3ft SW swell with a 17-second period and light cross-on wind at 6 mph, giving moderate energy (632). It’s still marginal, but if you’re desperate and the tide lines up, it might offer a few workable walls.
Bottom line: this is a blank run for Oceanside Beach. The swell is too small, the wind is never cleanly offshore, and the long periods just don’t suit the exposed beach setup. It’s a tough time – don’t expect much, and if you’re a beginner, the 4ft on Tuesday is manageable but messy. For the experts, there’s nothing to get excited about. Keep an eye on the long-range, but forecasts can change – it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
