The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks for Lecount Hollow.
It’s a tough start. There’s a long spell of poor conditions from now until the end of August. The swell is tiny, with combined energy readings barely reaching 83, and most of the time we’re fighting onshore or cross-shore breezes that just turn the surface into a mess.
The only session that really qualifies in the first week is Saturday afternoon, August 22. It’s a weak 3ft of short-period east swell with a combined energy of just 74. The reason to look at it is that the wind goes glassy out of the north. That’s your only window of truly clean, rideable small waves. The water temp is 69°, right around where it should be for the season.
Then we hit a real dry spell. No real recommendations from the 23rd all the way through the 3rd of September. That’s a solid week-plus of flat, choppy junk. A blank run like this is pretty normal for the area when the patterns stall out.
Finally, things start heating up for the big kids. On Friday, September 4, the swell starts building. Mornings see 5ft of east-southeast swell with light onshore wind and energy climbing to 243. By the afternoon, that energy jumps to 474 with the same size. Conditions are uncertain, but the power is getting serious.
The real gem, though, is Saturday morning, September 5. The swell hits 6ft at a 7-second period out of the east-northeast, with a combined energy of 313. The wind goes glassy. Dead calm. That’s the kind of morning where Lecount Hollow can fire for the experienced crew. At that size, it’s definitely not one for the beginners.
The wind shifts onshore that afternoon and ruins it, so make sure you’re on it first thing. Sunday drops off fast, so your best bet is that early morning window.
Hang tight, keep your wetsuit dry, and I’ll catch you out there.
Rusty.
