The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have an honest look at what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta tell ya, it’s gonna be a long wait. There’s nothing worth paddling out for until around the 26th of August. That’s a solid ten days of flat or junk conditions. The wind is mostly cross-onshore from the south-east, the waves are tiny—nothing over 3 feet—and the energy in the water is pathetic, barely registering a whisper with combined swell energy readings mostly in the teens and twenties. It’s a tough stretch.
But, for those with patience, things finally start to stir on the 26th. We’ve got our one and only break on offer: Deveraux Beach (Marx). It’s a reef setup, fairly consistent, but usually only a beginner-friendly spot. Now, on the 26th of August, the swell picks up to 4 feet coming out of the northeast, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 159. That’s more like it. The water temp is about average for this time of year, sitting at 69°.
The problem? The wind on the 26th is a cross-on south-easterly at 19 mph. It’s gonna be lumpy. Not ideal. The period is only 6 seconds, so it’s a weak, short-period windswell. This isn’t the cleanest option, but it’s the most size we see.
A slightly better call might be the 27th. Swell holds at 4 feet from the northeast, combined energy is a strong 223—that’s real push. The wind clocks around to a cross-shore easterly, light at 6 mph, which will clean it up a bit. Still, with a 7-second period, it’s not a groundswell, but it’s the most sustained wave energy of the whole run.
Given the persistent poor conditions for the first nine days, and then the lumpy, short-period nature of the late-August pulse, nothing here is a true standout. The best of a bad bunch is Thursday 27th August at Deveraux Beach. If you absolutely need to get wet, aim for that afternoon session with the light cross-shore wind and 4 feet. Don’t expect perfection, but at least there’s something to push you around.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts. Things change.
Rusty.
