The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Deveraux Beach. I’ve been watching this forecast and, honestly, there’s not a single decent surf session in the whole 16-day window. Zero. Nada. The reef here is usually fairly consistent, but this run is a total dud. For a beginner-friendly spot like this, it’s a bummer – but these things happen. The water temp is sitting at 66°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re staring at flat lines.
We start Saturday July 18 with a tiny 0.3ft bump from the east, but a southerly breeze at 12 mph keeps it messy. That afternoon a bit more size (3ft) but with a 4-second period and 19 mph from the south – no thanks. Sunday July 19 morning sees a bit of cross-offshore from the north-west, but only 1.0ft and 6-second period, so still nothing worth paddling for. The whole first week is plagued by onshore or cross-onshore winds and small, weak swell. Even when the energy picks up a bit – like Wednesday July 22 morning with 5ft and a combined energy of 179 (moderate) – the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. Afternoon brings 4ft with a 9-second period and 192 energy, but still cross-shore and messy. No clean sets.
The second week doesn’t get any better. Thursday July 23 morning has a brief window of clean cross-offshore from the north-east, but only 2ft at 8 seconds. That’s about as good as it gets, and it’s still poor. Friday July 24 morning is glassy with a light north-easterly, but again just 2ft. By Saturday July 25, the wind swings back onshore. The last few days of July and into August show nothing but tiny, short-period swell with onshore winds. Even the occasional glassy moment – like Tuesday July 28 morning with 0.7ft – is too small to ride. The entire period is a washout.
So what’s the takeaway? Don’t bother checking the tide charts for Deveraux Beach over the next two weeks. Forecasts can change, and this spot is known to fire up when the wind and swell align, but right now it’s as flat and ugly as a parking lot. I’d keep an eye on the longer-range outlook, but for now, save your wax.
