Alright, let’s put it in feet and miles per hour. It's a flat spell around here, so don't go getting your hopes up too high. There's a long stretch coming where you'll be hard-pressed to find a wave worth paddling for. The forecast shows some small bumps, but nothing that’s going to get the heart racing.
The first real sniff of anything rideable crops up on Wednesday, July 8th over at Deveraux Beach – a reef setup that's fairly consistent, though it can get crowded sometimes. The water's sitting about average for the time of year, just a touch warmer than normal at 66°F. That morning we’re looking at a 4ft swell from the ESE (8 seconds period) with a gentle cross-shore wind around 9 mph. The combined swell energy is moderate (169). It’s not terrible, but it’s small and pretty ordinary – the kind of day you might get a few grovelly ones if you're desperate. The afternoon drops a little to 4ft, and the wind swings cross-onshore, chopping things up. Not great.
Thursday the 9th is a step down, with the swell dropping under 3ft all day. The wind is cross-onshore and it's a bit choppy. Combined energy is weak (73 and 57). You’d be better off doing something else.
By Friday the 10th, it’s gone. Swell down to 2ft and then 1ft. Clean in the morning with a light cross-offshore breeze, but there's just no push. The combined energy is pitiful (29 and 35).
From there, through the weekend and into the following week, it’s a brutal run of tiny, weak surf. From Saturday the 11th right through to Monday the 20th, we’re looking at waves mostly between 0.7ft and 2ft, with combined energy barely scraping 103 at one point. Winds are all over the place, but the swell just isn’t there. There’s a morning on Saturday the 18th with glassy conditions and 1ft from the SE – dead flat, but at least it'd be pretty to look at.
The best of a bad lot? Honestly, there isn't a standout. Wednesday morning, July 8th is the high point, and that's saying something. Low tide ripples on a reef with clean-ish wind. If you're a beginner, it's small enough to be safe, but don’t expect a wave you can really ride. For everyone else, it's a long blank period.
