The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this stretch of coastline is going through a long, flat spell. The next week and a half is mostly a write-off for decent waves, so don’t be fooled by the calendar. We’ve got a 16-day window, but the first real glimmer of something rideable doesn’t show up until Thursday the 23rd, and even then it’s a marginal call. There’s a long gap of very small or poor conditions before that.
The overall pattern is weak, short-period swell from the southeast, with fresh breezes messing up the surface most days. The combine swell energy is tiny, a lot of it under 100, barely registering. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the only faint hope falls on Thursday the 23rd morning at Deveraux Beach (reef). We’ve got a 2ft swell from the ESE, period around 10 seconds – that’s a bit of groundswell in there, so the energy is moderate (100). The wind is light and cross-offshore from the ENE, which means the surface will be clean. It’s not going to be pumping, but it’s the cleanest and most likely to offer a few small, workable waves. This is a beginner-friendly spot, and the water is normal for this time of year at 66°, nothing unusual there.
After that, we slide back into small, choppy, cross-on conditions for days. There’s another brief flicker on Wednesday the 29th afternoon with a 4ft swell from the east, but the period is a weak 6 seconds, so it’ll be lumpy. The wind is light cross-off, so it’s clean but the wave quality is just ordinary. The combined energy pushes up a bit (111), but it’s not a standout.
The only other time the swell gets above 5ft is on Tuesday the 28th afternoon, when a 6ft ENE swell hits with a short 7-second period. That’s a lot of water moving fast, and combined energy jumps to 249 – moderate to strong. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean, but the short period means it’s going to be a bit of a mess. That’s a session for experienced surfers only, as it’s too big for beginners. It might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than for a paddle board, given the power and the beach setup.
Honestly, if you’re looking for the best on offer, it’s Thursday the 23rd morning. Keep your expectations low, and you might get a few small, clean ones. The rest of the period is a waiting game.
Rusty.
