The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this outlook is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty flat and uninspiring for Devereaux Beach. There’s only one surf break in the mix, and it’s not delivering much.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Saturday, 22nd August, in the afternoon. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the east, but it’s a short-period 6 seconds, so it’s gonna be a bit fat and weak. The combined energy is only 142 (moderate), but the wind is offshore from the north at 12 mph, which will keep the face clean. The water is sitting at 69°, which is about normal for this time of year. A bit of a silver lining, but honestly, this is surfable waves with very ordinary conditions—nothing to get excited about. It’s a beginner-friendly reef break, but even then, it’s not a standout.
The rest of the forecast is a flat run. From Friday morning, 21st August, right through to Saturday, 5th September, it’s mostly tiny ankle-slappers or close-outs. The biggest other pulse is a 3ft swell from the southeast on Tuesday, 1st September, with a 5-second period—absolute dog food. Winds are all over the shop, mostly cross or cross-on, and the energy barely cracks 50 (weak). You’ll be fighting for a bump that’s not worth the paddle.
There’s a brief moment of glass on Wednesday morning, 2nd September, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft with a 9-second period. A long-period groundswell that’s too small to do anything. It’s clean, but you’d be floating on a pond.
The one standout? It’s gotta be Saturday afternoon, 22nd August. The offshore wind and the 4ft east swell are the only real combo worth a look. But don’t kid yourself—it’s not a world-beater. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out there, but with this quality, it won’t be packed.
The gap of no good surf is huge—basically from now until the 22nd, then again from the 23rd onward. A blank run like this is more normal for the area when the swell just doesn’t line up. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the shed.
Rusty.
