The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. I gotta be straight with you – looking at the next couple of weeks, the surf around here is a total write-off. We’ve got a solid 16-day run on the cards, and not a single session worth paddling out for. It’s a real bummer, but sometimes the ocean just goes flat like this, especially around this part of the year.
Alright, let’s walk through it. We start off on Wednesday the 19th of August with tiny 0.4m (1 ft) swell from the ESE, period a weak 7 seconds, and combined energy at a pathetic 24. Morning has a light SSE breeze, but the waves are just rubbish. The afternoon goes glassy with a 5 km/h (3 mph) southerly, but the swell is still only 0.5m (2 ft) and the period drops to 6 seconds – barely enough to stand up on.
Thursday the 20th is more of the same: 0.4m (1 ft), 8-second period in the morning under glassy WNW winds, but still zero quality. Friday the 21st gives us a brief clean look with a light ENE breeze, but the wave height stays at 0.4m (1 ft) and the period is 8 seconds. The afternoon gets chopped up by a 20 km/h (12 mph) SE wind.
Every single day follows this pattern. Saturday the 22nd, Sunday the 23rd, Monday the 24th – all tiny 0.2m (0.7 ft) to 0.5m (2 ft) waves from the ESE or SE, periods never cracking 12 seconds in any meaningful way, and the combined energy stays below 100 the whole time. Even when we get some clean, glassy conditions on the 25th with a SSW breeze, the swell is a mere 0.2m (0.7 ft) at 11 seconds with energy of just 16 – basically a lake.
We get a couple of afternoons late in the run, like the 28th of August afternoon, where the ESE swell bumps up to 0.6m (2 ft) with a 9-second period, energy hits 65, and it’s clean under a NE cross-off breeze. But “poor surf conditions” is stamped all over it. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The only break on offer is Deveraux Beach, a beginner-friendly reef break that’s fairly consistent but has poor exposure to this weak angled swell. It’s an ENE optimum, and we’re getting ESE and SE slop that just doesn’t line up. Crowds are possible here, but honestly, nobody’s going to be out in this.
The long-range outlook doesn’t save us. Into the first week of September, we see a tiny 0.8m (3 ft) spike from the south on September 2nd morning, but with a period of only 4 seconds and a combined energy of 37, it’s a windswell dud. The rest is just 0.1m (0.3 ft) to 0.3m (1.0 ft) junk.
There are zero standout days. Zilch. Nada. This is a full 16-day flat spell, and while forecasts can always change, it looks like we hibernate for a while. If it stays this small and weak, the setup might interest kite surfers more than paddle surfers down the beach, but for now, it’s all quiet.
Better luck next window.
Rusty.
