The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – looking out over this 16-day window for Devereaux Beach, it’s a tough stretch. The surf is pretty much flat or non-existent for the majority of it, with only a couple of moments that might get your heart rate up. There’s a long, dry gap right through until the tail end of the first week of September before anything even sniffs at being ridable.
We start off on Sunday the 23rd of August. Tiny little knee-high waves around 2 feet from the east, with a weak period of 6 seconds and combined energy of only (39). The wind is a light cross from the east, which has things looking messy. The water temp is 68.5°, which is about normal for this time of year, but there’s nothing to ride. This lack of surf continues all the way through the week. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th see similar tiny, weak swell from the ESE. The wind shifts around, but it’s always cross-on or onshore, just chopping up the already non-existent waves. The only real moment of interest comes on the afternoon of the 30th of August when we get glassy conditions – a light north wind of just 3 mph. The swell is flat though, at 1 foot with a weak 7-second period, so it’s flat and clean, not surfable.
We hit the 31st of August and the 1st of September, still no real size, but the period jumps up. We see a long-period groundswell arriving on the 31st of August afternoon from the ESE at 16 seconds, but it only pushes 1 foot of swell, energy climbing to (77). Conditions are clean with a light cross-offshore wind, but it’s simply too small to paddle. The 1st of September is similar, with the swell still tiny but period dropping to 14 and 13 seconds, keeping those clean looks but no rideable height.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. The morning of the 2nd of September, the swell finally pushes up to a proper size. We get 5 feet from the ENE. That’s a wave with some push, but the period drops to a short 7 seconds, and the combined energy is a moderate (237). The problem is the wind is a gentle cross-onshore from the SSE, turning it into a choppy mess. The record says “poor surf conditions” for the whole day. For the next day, the 3rd of September, the swell holds around 4 feet, energy is strong at (231), but onshore winds from the SE and E keep it blown out and ugly. Definitely not a day to rush out for.
The true standout, the only real shining moment in this entire outlook, is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. The wind finally goes clean offshore from the NNE, blowing at just 6 mph. The swell is a solid 4 feet from the ENE, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is strong at (315). This is the time. It’s a reef break, so it handles that E/ENE swell direction well right out of the guide’s optimum. The offshore wind will have those lines looking clean. The morning session is your window. The afternoon shifts with a cross-shore wind, so it gets a bit bumpy. If you can only surf one day in this whole forecast, this is it.
After that, the swell quickly drops back down into the tiny range for the rest of the outlook, with onshore winds coming back in, so it’s back to waiting on the beach.
