The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are going to test your patience if you’re chasing waves around Deveraux Beach. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing that’s worth getting wet for, and that runs right through the end of August. The swell just isn’t there, and the energy in the water is weak, with combined energy readings maxing out in the 40s and 50s for most of this period. You’re looking at knee-high slop at best, mixed with some onshore junk at times. The first real sign of life doesn’t even show up until the very end of the window.
Now, Deveraux Beach (a reef setup) is usually fairly consistent, so this kind of blank run is a bit of a bummer. It's a beginner-friendly spot, but with nothing but tiny leftovers, it’s not even worth the paddle.
We do see a little bump of energy on the 31st of August. The combined swell energy jumps up to 193, and then 261, with the swell pushing 5ft to 6ft. But don’t get excited yet. This is short-period wind swell, coming from the ENE, and the wind is going to be cross-onshore. The surf report says it plainly: poor surf conditions. That kind of energy and wind just makes for a lumpy, messy close-out. It’s more of a washing machine than a wave. For a beach and reef setup like this, that combo is looking far more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing.
Then, on the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September, things finally turn. The wind goes glassy, absolutely calm. The swell drops back to 4ft from the NE, but the energy reading is up at 152, which is moderate. The report finally says it's surfable, but very ordinary. It’s not going to be a world-beater, but if you’re desperate, this is your window. Glassy conditions are a huge plus, so the surface should be clean, even if the waves are a bit fat and weak from that short period.
After that, it fades back out again. The afternoon of the 1st does have a long-period (13s) swell, but it’s tiny at 0.7ft. Then the 2nd of September brings some cleaner cross-off wind, but the swell is still weak at 2ft and the energy is low.
So, here’s the deal. The standout, such as it is, is that Tuesday morning, September 1st. It’s the only time in this whole stretch where the conditions come together to offer something clean and rideable. It’s not big, it’s not powerful, but it’s glassy and it’s surfable. For a long-range call, it’s promising but not something to bank your life on. The rest of the time, save your energy. It’s a flat, junky stretch. Sea surface temps are about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Keep the faith, check back in, and don’t force it.
