Table - best surf conditions forecast for Deveraux Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch of water is going through a flat spell. We’ve got a solid 16-day window in front of us, but the first week and a half is basically a write-off for any decent surf. You’ll be looking at a long gap of little to nothing until the 20th of July rolls around.
The only spot we’ve got on the radar is Deveraux Beach. It’s a beginner-friendly reef break that’s fairly consistent when there’s swell, but for the first 10 days, the energy is just not there. The water temperature is sitting at about 66°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least the water won’t be a shock.
From Friday the 10th all the way through Friday the 19th, the swell is tiny. We’re talking ankle-snappers at best, with wave heights hovering between 0.3ft and 2ft. The combined energy is weak, reading between 4 and 49 (weak energy) for most of this period. The winds are all over the place – some mornings might look clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but there’s just no power in the water to push a decent wave. Expect a lot of waiting around for nothing.
Now, things finally look a little more interesting on Monday the 20th of July. The swell finally shows up. On Monday morning, we get a bump from the east at 6ft with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 255 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a cross-shore so it’s not perfect, but it’s rideable. By Monday afternoon, the swell pushes up to 7ft from the east, and the energy hits 356 (moderate wave energy). The wind switches to a cross-offshore, so the surface will be clean. That’s the best window in the whole 16-day forecast. It’s solidly in the intermediate zone, but for beginners, this is getting a bit big. The period is short though, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and not the most powerful.
Tuesday the 21st keeps the swell going, but it drops a bit to 4ft in the morning. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the ENE, but it’s blowing 19 mph, which is a fresh breeze. Still, the surface stays clean. The energy is down to 133 (moderate wave energy). The swell is still from the east with a short period, so it’s not the best quality.
After that, it kind of fades out again. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd see the swell dropping back to 2ft and 2ft, and the energy falls off a cliff. The rest of the run into the 25th just looks like small, choppy leftovers.
So, the standout is Monday the 20th of July into Tuesday the 21st. That’s your best bet. The morning of the 20th gives you a solid 6ft, and the afternoon cleans up with a 7ft east swell and cross-off winds. It’s not a perfect wave, but it’s the only real surf in the whole window. Just know that the crowds are likely to be there – Deveraux Beach can get busy, so expect company.
That’s the story. It’s a long wait for a short window of action. Stay patient.
Rusty.
