The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’ve got a long stretch of quiet water ahead. This isn’t going to be one for the photo album.
The forecast for Devereaux Beach is a flat spell that stretches out for days. For the first week, from Monday the 13th of July right through to Sunday the 19th, the swell is virtually non-existent. We’re talking tiny ripples of 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with combined wave energy barely registering (4 to 11). The wind is all over the shop – cross-on, cross, even a bit of offshore on the Sunday, but with no swell to work with, it doesn’t matter. It’s just a flat, glassy lake on the Wednesday afternoon, but you can’t surf a lake.
The water temp is sitting at 69°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when there’s nothing to ride.
We roll into the second week, and things pick up a tiny bit. Monday the 20th sees a small bump, with a glassy morning and a 2ft swell from the east, but the period is a horrible 3 seconds – that’s just wind chop. The energy is still weak (7). By Tuesday and Wednesday the 21st and 22nd, we get a bit more height, around 3ft, from the ESE, but it’s a short-period, messy selection with cross-onshore winds. The combined energy gets up to 88, which is still only weak, and the conditions are described as “choppy” and “lumpy.” Not your friend.
The surf stays poor right through to the end of the forecast. The biggest swell we see is only 3ft, and the wind is almost always onshore or cross-shore. There’s one decent morning on the 24th with a light cross-shore and a 1ft SE swell, but it’s inconsistent and weak.
Honestly, for the entire 16-day window, there isn’t a single standout. There is no day where the swell, wind, and period all line up. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might find a tiny clean wave on the 20th morning, but it’s a gamble. The setup here is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer if the wind picks up, but for the rest of us, it’s a waiting game.
Keep the board in the car, but don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
