The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this one is a tough watch. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat to barely-there surf. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The first solid recommendation only pops up at the very tail end, and even then it’s nothing to get excited about.
The first week and a half is almost completely dead. From Tuesday the 14th of July right through to the middle of the following week, the swell is either non-existent or tiny, with a few dinky pulses of 0.3ft to 0.7ft that just don’t have enough push. The wave energy is seriously weak, with combined energy values sitting in the low single digits to low teens. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. There are a few glassy or clean windows in the wind, but with no swell to work with, it’s a waste of good conditions.
The only real pulse of the whole period shows up on Monday the 20th of July, with a bit of a bump in the afternoon. The swell jumps to 4ft from the SE, but it’s a short-period, weak windswell with a period of just 5 seconds and a combined energy of 69. That’s still on the low side. The wind is onshore and strong at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy. It’s really not a surfing proposition.
The best of a bad bunch comes right at the end of the forecast. We’ve got a clean run of weather on the 26th of July, Sunday. The swell is still only 2ft from the ESE, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 52. At Devereaux Beach (Santa Barbara), the wind is offshore and light through the morning and afternoon, which will make the surface glassy. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 69°, but that’s about the only positive. For a beginner, at this size, it’s safe, but there’s just no power in it. The waves will be small and weak.
That’s it. A long, flat run with one tiny window of clean but small surf. The rest of the time, the wind is all over the place and the swell is missing. The set-up looks more interesting for a kite than a surfboard, honestly. For a proper paddle session, you’re better off waiting for the next system.
Rusty.
