Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a pretty grim outlook for Deveraux Beach. We’ve got a solid 16-day window to look at, but for the first week and a half, it’s a real struggle. There are no recommendations for a good surf session anywhere in this period, so I’ll just walk you through what’s on offer.
The first time we see any real swell energy is on Tuesday, 7th July, with a combined energy of 229 (moderate wave energy) and swell hitting 6 ft to 6 ft from the ESE. But the wind is a problem – it’s a fresh cross-shore on the morning and a cross-offshore in the afternoon, and the period is a short, weak 6-7 seconds. That’s messy, lumpy chop, not clean surf. The ‘poor surf conditions’ label is honest. Wednesday morning, 8th July, cleans up a bit with a NE 9 mph cross-offshore breeze, but the swell drops to 5 ft at 7 seconds – still a short, weak wave. The combined energy (194) is moderate, but it’s not going to give you anything worth paddling out for.
After that, it’s a long, flat stretch. From Thursday, 9th July, all the way through to Sunday, 19th July, we’re looking at tiny swell – mostly 0.7 ft to 2 ft – with combined energy values dropping into the teens and twenties. Periods range from 4 to 10 seconds, but it’s just not enough. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, keeping things choppy or blown out. There’s a brief moment of glassy conditions on the morning of Thursday, 16th July, but the swell is only 0.7 ft – you’d be floating in a bathtub.
The only real standout – and I use that term loosely – is a very long-period pulse on the morning of Friday, 17th July. We’ve got a 0.3 ft swell from the E with a period of 15 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, but the height is basically nothing. The combined energy is a measly 6 (weak). The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNE at 6 mph, which would be perfect if there was anything to ride. But there isn’t. For a beach break, a long period like that on tiny swell just means long, flat lulls and barely a ripple.
Look, this is a tough run. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, but that doesn’t make up for the lack of waves. If you’ve got a kite, the moderate wind and chop on Tuesday, 7th July, might look more interesting than a paddle session. But for surfing, you’re going to be waiting a long time for a wave that’s worth the effort. Sometimes it’s just like this – the forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
