Table - best surf conditions forecast for Westport-The Cove over the next 16 days.

G’day, this is Rusty.

Alright, let’s be straight with you – the next two weeks at Westport-The Cove are a mixed bag, and we’ve got a long stretch of nothing much to get through before anything worth paddling out for shows up. The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, so no wetsuit surprises there.

We kick off Tuesday afternoon, July 7th, with a long-period groundswell from the SW at 2ft, but it’s coming in at 20 seconds and the wind is a cross-on from the WNW at 12 mph. That’s creating messy, choppy conditions and poor surf. The combined swell energy is moderate at (838), but it’s just not clean. This theme sticks around through Wednesday and into Thursday morning, July 9th – small waves (2ft to 3ft), cross or cross-on winds, and the forecast is calling it marginal at best. Thursday afternoon offers a slight uptick in energy (898) but still only 3ft and cross-shore wind – it’s not great, but maybe a longboard could find a few if you’re desperate.

Friday, July 10th, is more of the same – small, short-period swell, cross winds, and marginal conditions. Saturday morning, July 11th, finally gives us a glimmer: a 4ft swell from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind switches to a light cross-offshore from the WSW at 9 mph. That’ll clean things up nicely – clean surf, gentle breeze, and it’s looking like the best option in this whole first week. But don’t get too excited; Saturday afternoon turns ugly again with a cross-on breeze. Sunday through to the following Saturday, July 18th, is mostly a write-off – poor conditions, choppy, cross-on winds, and the swell stays small (1ft to 3ft) with a few exceptions of 4ft that are blown out.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. After a solid week of frustration, Sunday morning, July 19th, brings a real standout. We get a 5ft swell from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind goes offshore from the SSW at 9 mph. Gentle offshore and clean – that’s the kind of morning you set your alarm for. The swell is still manageable for most skill levels, and although it’s not huge, the clean conditions will make it rideable and fun. The afternoon holds at 6ft with a cross-off breeze. Monday, July 20th, falls apart again with cross-on winds, but then Tuesday, July 21st, delivers another clean session: 4ft to 5ft from the WNW, light cross-off winds from the SW and WSW, and clean surf. That Tuesday morning and afternoon look solid.

Wednesday, July 22nd, rounds out the outlook with 5ft swell but cross-shore winds and a short period of 6-7 seconds, making it choppy and marginal again.

So, if you’re looking for a session, your best bet is to hold out for Sunday morning, July 19th – that offshore wind and 5ft swell is the pick of the whole period. Tuesday, July 21st, is also a good backup with clean conditions. The rest of the time, you’d be wrestling with chop. Keep an eye on the forecast, because when it turns on, it’s worth the wait.

Rusty.
