The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down what Westport-The Cove is serving up for the next couple of weeks.
The first real surf pops up on Friday, 17 July. The water is about 58°, which is a touch over a degree cooler than average for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a little brisk.
Friday morning is the one to zero in on. We've got a clean 2ft swell out of the West with a very long 16-second period. The wind is a light offshore from the SSW, so the surface is going to be smooth as glass. The combined swell energy is a moderate 459, and you'll feel the ocean has some real substance. This is a standout for the beginner-friendly beach/jetty – clean, easy, and just fun. The afternoon holds that clean feel with a light cross-offshore breeze from the WSW, keeping that 2ft West swell tidy.
Saturday, 18 July, the morning gets a bit messy with a light cross-shore breeze, but the swell holds at 2ft. Not a washout, but not as good as Friday. The afternoon turns into a write-off with a 4ft, short-period (9 seconds) WNW swell getting chopped up by a moderate cross-onshore wind. That's the end of the first run.
We hit a dry spell from Sunday, 19 July through to Tuesday, 21 July. The swell drops off, and what's left is either too small or blown out by onshore winds. Not worth the effort.
Wednesday, 22 July, the afternoon brings a real spark. A clean 4ft swell from the SSW with a 14-second period, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the WSW. The combined energy jumps to 703 – that's a solid, punchy wave. Conditions are clean, and this is another standout. The Cove will have some nice shape on offer.
We get a few more clean mornings on Thursday, 23 July, and Friday, 24 July, but the swell is small – 3ft and 1ft respectively. Fun for a longboard, but nothing to shout about. The wind is good, though.
Saturday, 25 July, the morning is a highlight. A 2ft swell from the SW with a *very* long 23-second period, and a light offshore wind from the SSW. The combined energy is 337, and it's clean. That long period will give you some lined-up waves, but it's small, so keep your expectations in check.
From Sunday, 26 July, through to Wednesday, 29 July, the wind turns mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the swell gets messy. There's energy in the water (some readings over 700), but the quality is poor. Skip it.
The real standout for the second week is Thursday, 30 July. The morning is very clean with a 3ft SW swell and a 16-second period, plus a light cross-offshore breeze from the SW. The combined energy is a solid 885 – that's a lot of power for that size. This is the best of the week. The afternoon holds up too, with clean 3ft waves.
Friday, 31 July, and Saturday, 1 August, are both decent. Friday morning has a clean 4ft WNW swell, but it's only 8 seconds, so it'll be a bit crumbly. Saturday morning is similar – 4ft, short period, but clean. The afternoons get a bit crossed up.
Overall, the best of the bunch is Friday, 17 July morning for that clean, glassy start, and Wednesday, 22 July afternoon for the punchy, clean SSW swell. Thursday, 30 July morning is the long-range standout – promising, but it's over a week out, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
