Table - best surf conditions forecast for Westport-The Cove over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Westport-The Cove. This is a beach/jetty setup that’s fairly consistent, but we’re looking at a real mixed bag over the next couple of weeks.
The first decent window hits us on Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. We've got a 3 ft swell rolling in from the west with a 12-second period. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the southwest, so the surface will be clean. The overall energy is moderate (316). That southwest wind direction is right on the money for this spot, so conditions should be tidy. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, so that’s a good option for a learner session.
Thursday morning, the 20th, offers a slightly bigger 4 ft swell from the west-northwest, period dropping to 11 seconds. Light cross-offshore wind again, so it stays clean. The combined energy steps up a notch (504). This is a solid, workable wave for the more experienced beginners, but nothing to lose your mind over.
The real standout, and the one I’d be circling on the calendar, is Monday morning, the 31st of August. A clean 3 ft swell from the west at 13 seconds, with a glassy, light cross-offshore breeze from the west-southwest. The energy is moderate (552). This is the best combo of size, direction, and wind in the whole run. The optimum swell direction is west-southwest, and we’re getting a west swell, so it’s right in the wheelhouse. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
Then Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, brings another clean session. Light offshore from the south at 9 mph, with a 3 ft west-northwest swell at 11 seconds. The energy is moderate (333). It’s a smaller, cleaner option for the start of the week.
Now, the gap. After Friday afternoon, the 21st, things get ugly. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Saturday the 29th of August, it’s a write-off. We’re looking at a solid week of poor surf conditions. The swell drops off to just 1 ft to 2 ft, and the wind turns cross-onshore from the northwest, making it choppy and messy. The energy is weak (161 to 336). Not worth paddling out for.
The end of the run on the 2nd and 3rd of September looks rough too. Strong offshore winds will make it clean but hard to paddle into, and the swell is small and weak. A light rain won’t help the mood.
Overall, the best bet is that Monday morning, the 31st of August. It’s the cleanest, most consistent wave in the whole 16-day window. The mid-week options on the 19th and 20th are good for a quick paddle, but don’t expect anything epic after that until the final day of the month.
Stay salty,
Rusty
