The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a 16-day window for Westport-The Cove, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s a slow burn. The first week is all about small, clean waves for the patient surfer, but the real pay-off is waiting at the end. Let’s run through it.
Right now, Saturday the 22nd, we’ve got tiny 1ft swell rolling in from the SW with a long 18-second period. The water’s sitting at 59°F, which is about average for the time of year. It’s not going to blow your mind, but with a moderate offshore breeze, those little lines will be glassy. The combined swell energy is moderate at 195. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a write-off. The wind swings cross-shore and cross-on, and the waves stay tiny and weak. The energy drops into the 100s. Not worth the paddle out.
Tuesday the 25th is where it starts to get interesting. We’ve got a gentle offshore wind from the SSW, and the swell picks up slightly to 2ft from the WSW with a solid 17-second period. The energy climbs to a moderate 284-331. It’s still small, but those long-period lines will be clean and lined up. This is the pick of the first week for a longboard or a funboard.
From Wednesday the 26th through to the end of the month, the pattern stays similar: small SW swell, generally clean mornings with light offshores or cross-offshores, but nothing firing. The energy sits in the 150-250 range. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th get chopped up by cross-onshore NW winds. Monday the 31st morning goes glassy with 2ft swell—calm as a lake, but still tiny. There’s a gap of a few days here where you’re just scratching for anything decent.
Now, here’s where it gets good. We jump into September. On Tuesday the 1st, the swell bumps up to 4ft from the WSW, but the period drops to 8 seconds—short-period wind swell, but with a light offshore breeze from the S, it’ll be clean. The energy jumps to 274-295. Wednesday the 2nd stays similar with 4ft from the W and a 9-second period, clean in the morning. This is better, but still not the standout.
The real standout is Friday the 4th of September. We’ve got a 2ft to 3ft swell from the SW, but the period stretches out to 19 seconds—that’s proper long-period groundswell. The combined energy is strong, hitting 394 in the morning and exploding to a very strong 621 in the afternoon with a moderate offshore wind from the S. This is clean, powerful, and lined up. Best sessions of the whole outlook right here.
But wait, there’s more on the radar. Saturday the 5th gets messy with cross-shore wind and a 7ft W swell—that’s too big for beginners and the wind will chop it up. Then Sunday the 6th of September? The morning brings a solid 8ft W swell with a 12-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze. Energy is through the roof at 2215. This is for experienced surfers only—it will be powerful and heavy. The afternoon turns choppy with cross-on wind, so get on it early.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a longboard game. The standout is Friday the 4th for clean, long-period groundswell. For the big dog crew, Sunday the 6th morning is the heavy-hitter session.
Rusty, out.
