The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Westport-The Cove. This is a beach and jetty setup, and it’s a pretty consistent spot that’s good for beginners. The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is about 2° cooler than usual for this time of year – nothing too wild, just a little on the nippy side.
The next week and a half is a real mixed bag, with a lot of onshore chop to sit through. We’ve got a long stretch of average to poor conditions coming up first. Starting Sunday, the 19th, through to Tuesday, the 21st, it’s mostly cross-on winds with weak, short-period swell. The wave energy is only moderate, reading between 310 and 397 on the scale, and it’s gonna be choppy. Not worth paddling out for.
There’s a glimmer of hope on Wednesday morning, the 22nd, and Thursday morning, the 23rd. The wind swings cross-offshore, cleaning things up with a light breeze. The swell is small, around 4 ft from the WNW, with a short period of 8 seconds, so it’s not got much push. The energy is still moderate (314 and 301). It’s surfable – clean, small waves for the beginner crew – but nothing to get excited about.
Now, the real standout is the last weekend of July and the start of August. Friday morning, the 24th, the wind goes offshore, and the swell is a tiny 2 ft, but the period is a massive 26 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, so the energy is strong at 559. Because it’s so long, this spot being a beach/jetty might see some straight lines, but it’ll be glassy clean. Saturday morning, the 25th, is also clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, 2 ft from the SW at 23 seconds. The energy is moderate (340).
But the best of the whole run is Sunday, the 26th, Monday, the 27th, and Tuesday, the 28th. Especially Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon. The swell is a consistent 3 ft to 3 ft from the SW, with periods of 18 to 20 seconds, and the combined energy is strong – 805, 812, and 873. The wind is light and clean, mostly cross-offshore. This is about as good as it gets here for this window. Clean, glassy conditions with a long-period groundswell offering some proper shape. The crowds can be a thing here sometimes, but with these conditions, it’ll be worth sharing the water.
After that, from Wednesday the 29th through to the end of the run on the 3rd of August, it’s back to the same story: moderate to fresh cross-on winds, choppy lumpy water, and short-period WNW swell. The energy drops off, and it’s honestly more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddling one. The surf is poor.
So, to wrap it up, the surf is pretty average for the first half, but the window from Sunday the 26th to Tuesday the 28th is the clear winner. The Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning sessions are the standout picks – clean, good energy, and a proper long-period swell. If you can wait, that’s your time.
Rusty.
