Alright folks, it's Rusty here. Let's break down the next couple of weeks for Westport-The Cove.
To be straight with you, it's a tough stretch of days ahead. We're looking at a long, frustrating run of onshore winds, with the northwest wind blowing cross-on and messing up what little swell we get. The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is feeling a bit colder than usual for this time of year, by about 2°. For the first week, from Saturday the 4th right through to Tuesday the 14th, it's pretty much all "poor surf conditions." The wind just won't give us a break – it's choppy and lumpy, with wave energy sitting mostly in that moderate range (373-680). There's a real lack of quality.
The bright spot, the only real glimmer in this whole outlook, comes on the morning of Wednesday the 8th. We get a brief window of light southwest winds that are cross-offshore and clean. That's our chance. The swell is a small but long-period groundswell from the southwest about 2ft, with a period of 18 seconds and moderate energy (540). It's a short period of clean, lined-up waves, but it won't be big. Given the long period and point/jetty setup here, it could be surprisingly fun if you're on it. Don't sleep on it, because the afternoon goes straight back to the onshore junk.
After that, it's back to the grind. The wind stays cross-on for days, with only a couple of "marginal" moments. On Friday the 10th morning, we get a light cross-shore wind, and on Monday the 13th morning, another brief clean-up with light cross-off winds and a tiny 2ft southwest swell. It's surfable, but very ordinary.
Looking way out to the second week, there's a bump in size around Saturday the 18th of July, with swell climbing to 5ft and 6ft from the WNW. The problem is the wind is still cross-on and choppy. The energy jumps right up (598-712) but it's going to be a messy, blown-out mess. That kind of size and gusty wind at a beach/jetty could make for a better kite session than a surf. By Sunday the 19th, the swell is up to 7ft from the WNW, and the wave energy is strong at over 1000, but with a fresh 19 mph cross-on wind, that's a hard pass for paddle surfing unless you're a glutton for punishment. A few of those days might appeal to the expert crew for a challenge, but the quality just isn't there.
So to sum it up: mark your calendar for the morning of the 8th of July. That's the one to chase. The rest of the run is a waiting game.
Rusty.
