The Lowdown
Alright, surf’s up… or at least, it’s gonna be something. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks, Westport.
The first few days are pretty lackluster, to be honest. Monday the 17th is a write-off. We’ve got a weak and messy 2ft SW groundswell (277 combined energy) but a lumpy cross-onshore wind is going to chop it all up. Not worth getting wet for. Tuesday the 18th is better, but only just. It’s cleaned up a touch with a cross-offshore breeze and the swell is holding at 2ft. It’s small and weak, but you could get a few crumbly ones on a high tide. The water is sitting at 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. Not a shocker, but you’ll want the hood and booties.
The first real highlight pops up on Thursday the 20th. The wind goes glassy early, and the swell bumps up to 4ft from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds. The energy is up too (548 combined). This is a proper little clean window. The Cove (Westport) will be holding some fun, lined-up waves, and with the offshore wind and glassy conditions, it’s going to be smooth. This is the one to get out for in the first week. The afternoon will deteriorate, so get your fix in the morning.
Friday the 21st is still surfable with a clean 3ft, but the period drops to 8 seconds, and the energy is waning. It will be okay, but nothing special. The weekend and next week drop off significantly. The swell drops back down to under 3ft, and the winds turn onshore and get annoying. There’s a two-to-three day stretch there where it’s pretty much a flat, choppy mess. You’re looking at poor conditions and small, weak waves. Not worth the paddle.
There is a small glimmer around the 24th, with a glassy morning and a long 18-second period swell, but it’s only 2ft. It’s more like a lake than an ocean. A better option appears on Tuesday the 26th and Wednesday the 27th, but again, the wind is just not on our side, keeping things bumpy. The surf stays small and uninviting through to the end of August.
The final call for this forecast period is Monday the 31st. It’s a late one. The wind drops to dead calm and it goes glassy, with a clean 2ft SW swell (279 energy). It’s small, but with the total lack of wind, it’ll be silky. If you’re desperate, it's your best bet outside of Thursday the 20th. But keep your expectations in check. There’s a fair gap in the middle of the window where this coast just looks flat and unhappy.
Overall, Thursday the 20th is your standout. It’s the biggest, cleanest, and most consistent surf we’re going to see. The 31st is a distant second. Everything else is a gamble against bad wind and tiny waves.
This is Rusty, signing off. Keep an eye on that forecast, it might just turn around.
