The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it's looking bleak for a long stretch. The first solid recommendation doesn't pop up until late in the game. For the first ten days or so, from now through to the end of July, you're looking at a whole lot of nothing. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the conditions are just poor. You could probably take the boards off the car and save the petrol, because there's nothing worth paddling out for.
The only glimmer of hope, and it's a small one, comes on Sunday the 26th of July at Newcombs Hollow. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, around 68°, which is a nice little bonus. We've got a little 3ft swell pushing in from the SE, and the real story here is the wind. On the Sunday morning, we score a gentle offshore breeze from the West, which will clean things right up. Then Sunday afternoon looks even better, with a glassy, flat calm sea. The waves are small, but the energy is weak (65 in the combined swell energy), so it's not going to be a bomb. It's surfable, but very ordinary. Honestly, if you're desperate for a paddle and a few grovelly waves, that Sunday is your best and only shot.
The fun doesn't last, though. The following Monday the wind swings around again, and we're back to poor conditions. The next time we see anything close to decent is Thursday the 30th of July. The swell nudges up to 4ft from the North, which is a bit bigger, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it's not going to have much punch. The combined energy is only 92, still weak. The morning has a clean cross-off breeze, but it's just not enough to make it a standout. It's clean, but it's small and weak.
So, to sum it up: the whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent waves. The only real window is that Sunday the 26th, and even then, it's a tiny, clean-day option for a longboard or a funboard. Don't get your hopes up for anything with any power. I'll be keeping an eye on it, but for now, it's a time for working on your tan or fixing that ding.
Rusty.
