The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break this down. For the next couple of weeks, honestly, there’s not much to get excited about. We’ve got a real dry spell coming up – pretty much nothing that counts as a proper surf session for the whole forecast period.
The first chance is Wednesday morning, 19th August, at Newcombs Hollow. Swell is tiny at 2ft from the ESE, and the period is short at 6 seconds, so it’s weak and gutless – combined energy is only 65 (weak). The wind is light offshore from the west though, so the surface will be clean. But with waves that small and weak, it’s hardly worth paddling out.
From Wednesday afternoon, it goes downhill fast. The wind swings onshore or cross-shore for days, and the swell stays tiny, often under 2ft. Periods are short, mostly 4 to 8 seconds. There is a small window Thursday morning the 20th with offshore wind again, but the swell is still just 2ft and the period only 7 seconds. Energy is 40 (very weak). It’s just not doing anything.
From there, it’s a long, bleak run. There are zero recommendations for the rest of the period – right through to Thursday 3rd September. The swell occasionally bumps up to 3ft or 3ft, but the wind is always onshore, cross-shore, or howling, and the period is rubbish. Combined energy never gets above 92 (weak), and that was with a longer 12 second period on Sunday 23rd August, but the swell was only 1ft.
Even the longer period swells that show up around the 23rd and 24th are too small to matter. There’s just no power behind anything. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
So yeah, it’s a total flat spell. If you’re desperate, maybe a dawny on Wednesday the 19th or Thursday the 20th with a longboard, but don’t expect much. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a proper blank run for the area.
