The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Bethany’s got cooking for us.
Straight up, this is a tough stretch. We’ve got a long, dry run of tiny, weak swells and a lot of wind for the next week and a half. The first proper surf recommendation doesn’t even appear until Sunday, July 19th, and even then it’s just barely surfable with a 3ft SSE swell, a short 7-second period, and moderate wave energy (72). The wind is cross-off from the WNW, so it’ll be clean, but the conditions are described as “very ordinary.” This is a real patience test.
For the entire first week, from Tuesday the 14th right through to Saturday the 19th morning, the swell is below 2ft with energy readings mostly in the teens and twenties. It’s just too small to bother with.
Now, later on, there’s a pulse of energy that stands out. On Thursday, July 23rd, the swell jumps to 6ft from the ENE, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy gets up to 342 and 413, which is moderate to strong. The wind is cross-off from the SSW at 19 mph, so it’ll be clean. This is the biggest swell of the outlook and the only real standout, but at 6ft with that period, it’s going to be a bit raw and dumpy. For the beach/jetty setup at Bethany, the ENE swell direction isn’t ideal, as it’s coming from the opposite side of the optimum. Still, it’s the only time we see real size and moderate energy. This is one for experienced surfers only; beginners will find it too much.
The rest of the second week stays small, with the next notable bump on Saturday the 25th being a 5ft SSE swell (energy 146) but with fresh onshore-blowing cross-off wind and a short period. Sunday the 26th is surfable again, with a 4ft SSE swell and offshore SSW wind, which will clean it up, but the energy is still moderate at 152.
Bottom line: the best bet is Thursday, July 23rd if you’re solid and want the most power, or the cleaner, smaller windows on Sunday the 19th afternoon and Sunday the 26th morning for a more relaxed paddle. Crowds are likely at Bethany, especially on those cleaner days.
Stay patient, mate. This is a quiet period for the area. Forecasts can change.
