The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the goods on Bethany. Let’s be straight with each other: right now, the surf is pretty flat and looking grim. The first few days are a write-off for any decent wave riding.

Starting from Tuesday, July 28th, it's tiny. We’re talking ankle-snappers at 1 ft from the ESE. The wind is howling out of the S at 16 mph, making it choppy. The combined wave energy is weak, like 28 to 18. Not worth paddling out.

Wednesday, July 29th, sees a tiny bump. The morning has a cross-shore wind from the NNW at 12 mph with 3 ft SSE swell, but the period is short at 7 seconds, and the energy is still low (67). The afternoon is only slightly better with a cleaner cross-off breeze from the WNW at 6 mph, but the wave height drops to 2 ft, and the energy is 59. It’s surfable, but only just.

The rest of the week into August is more of the same: small, weak, and mostly messy. Swell heights bounce between 0.7 ft and 3 ft, with short periods. There’s a brief moment on Friday, July 31st afternoon where it goes glassy, with 1 ft waves, but it’s just a glassy puddle. The energy is pathetic.

The first interesting pulse arrives on Monday, August 3rd afternoon. The swell ticks up to 4 ft from the ESE, with a period of 5 seconds. The energy hits 115, which is a moderate bump, but the period is so short it’ll be lumpy. Wind is light and cross-onshore.

Tuesday, August 4th morning offers the only real window that’s worth a look. The wind swings to a clean onshore from the NE at 9 mph, but the swell is 3 ft from the ESE with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is 103. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we see. The wave quality is still poor though, so don't get your hopes up.

After that, it’s back to tiny, weak surf for the next week. The swell is consistently under 2 ft with low energy. The whole 16-day window is a dud for Bethany. There are no standout days, no good size, and the wind is usually messy.

If you’re desperate for a paddle, the only thing to note is Wednesday, August 12th morning, when a light offshore breeze from the SW at 16 mph cleans up a pathetic 1.0 ft E swell. The water temp is just average for this time of year, so no need for a thick wetsuit.

Honestly, this setup is more interesting for kite surfing with the consistent cross-off winds than for paddling. We’ll need a proper storm track to change this.

Rusty.
