The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. Looking at the whole 16-day window, I’ve got to be honest: it’s a rough patch for Bethany. The swell is tiny, the wind is often messy, and for most of the run, you’re better off leaving the board in the car. There’s a real gap of poor or no surf from now until late July, with only a couple of fleeting moments that might be worth a paddle.
The first sniff of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Monday, July 27th morning. Now, we’re not talking about a classic. The swell is a weak 2ft from the ESE, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is only 50 (moderate) – it’s a tiny, weak pulse. The wind is a light SSW cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but it’s just ordinary. You’ll be scratching for knee-high slop. Not a standout, just a chance to get wet.
After that, the surf drops right back off again. There’s a long stretch of flat or total junk until Monday, August 3rd morning. This is the only real standout in the whole outlook. It’s not big, but it has a vibe. The swell is 3ft from the ENE, period is a low 6 seconds, so it’s a short-period windswell. The combined energy is 61 (moderate). The key here is the wind: it’s described as *glass*. That’s a major positive. For a beach/jetty spot like Bethany, a glassy morning is a rare gift. The waves will be tiny, clean, and crumbly. If you’re a beginner, this is your window. It’s the best on offer, but don’t expect anything powerful.
Water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
To sum it up: the first week is a write-off. Late July 27th is a maybe, but the real highlight is August 3rd morning. It won’t be epic, but for a glassy, clean little session, that’s your best bet.
Rusty.
