The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real about Bethany. We’re staring down a pretty grim 16-day window. The first worthwhile surf doesn’t show up until Monday morning, 3 August, and even then, it’s a struggle.

The overall pattern is dominated by small, weak swells and, apart from a few brief windows, mostly messy or onshore wind. The combined wave energy barely cracks 200 for a moment, and then we’re back into the weak stuff. There’s a long stretch from Tuesday afternoon, 4 August, all the way through the end of the forecast where it’s just a write-off—tiny waves, poor conditions, nothing to get excited about. We’re talking about days and days of flat, choppy, or just plain ugly surf.

The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, so no weird surprises there.

The only real chance to wet a line is Monday, 3 August at Bethany. This is a beginner-friendly beach and jetty setup, consistent, but it can get crowded sometimes. On Monday morning, we’ve got a 5ft swell from the SSE, but it’s got a short 8-second period, so it’s a bit weak and disorganized. The combined energy is 291 (moderate). The wind is blowing offshore from the SSW at 18 mph, which will clean the waves up nicely. It’s a fresh breeze, but it's offshore, so the faces will be groomed. Monday afternoon, the wind swings cross-offshore and the swell hangs in at 5ft, but the energy drops a touch (270). The conditions are described as “clean,” so it’s still rideable. Honestly, for a break of this size, it’s the best we’ve got. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but if you’re a beginner or just desperate for a paddle, Monday morning is your slot.

After that, it’s grim. Tuesday morning, 4 August, drops to 2ft with cross-onshore wind – choppy and poor. From there, it’s a steady diet of tiny waves (0.3ft to 3ft), poor scores, and mostly cross-offshore or onshore breezes. There’s a brief window on Wednesday morning, 5 August, with a 3ft SSE swell and offshore wind, but the energy is only 82 (weak) and the period is a pathetic 6 seconds. It’s surfable, but “very ordinary” is the official word, and I’d agree.

The rest of the period is a write-off. We’re talking about 0.3ft to 2ft surf, weak energy, and winds that are either too strong or from the wrong direction. From Thursday, 6 August, right through to the end on Tuesday, 18 August, there’s not a single recommendation that scores above a 1. It’s a big, flat gap. For a break like Bethany that’s consistent, this is a bad run, but it happens. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is what we’re stuck with.

If you’re a kite surfer, you might find some fun on the windier days, but for paddle surfing, it’s a long wait.

Rusty.
