Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a good hard look at what we've got coming down the line. To be straight with you, it's a bleak stretch for paddling a surfboard at Jenkinson’s (Point Pleasant Beach) for quite a while. We're looking at a long dry spell with nothing worth getting wet for until the middle of the month.
The whole first week is a write-off. From Friday the 3rd right through to Sunday the 12th, it's nothing but tiny, weak surf with combined energy readings barely getting into double digits, mostly sitting between 18 and 81 – that's weak, anemic stuff. The swell heights are stuck at 1 ft or less, and the winds are all over the place, often onshore or cross-shore, making a mess of things. It’s just poor conditions all around, day after day.
Now, we finally get a little flicker of hope by Wednesday morning the 15th of July. The morning brings a bit of a cleanup with a light WSW offshore breeze at 6 mph and a tiny 2 ft SSE swell. The combined energy is still a low 30, but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen. Still, with that short 7-second period, it’s going to be weak and mushy, more of a longboard glide than anything with push.
After that, the outlook goes back to tiny waves and lumpy cross-chop through to the end of the run on July 18th. There are no standouts here, no hidden gems. It's a proper flat spell. If you've got a kite, the onshore breezes on some of those afternoons with 3 ft of chop might be fun for you, but for stick riders, it's a time to wax the longboard and wait or check a different stretch of coast.
Stay patient, because forecasts can change. But as it stands, this is a classic summertime lull.
Rusty.
