The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, it's a tough outlook for us right now. The surf is pretty much flat for the next week or so, so don't be in a rush to wax up.
We're looking at Jenkinsons (Point Pleasant Beach). For the first string of days, from Sunday the 23rd of August all the way through to the end of the month, it's a write-off. The swell is tiny, barely making it to 2 ft, and what little energy is there is weak (combined energy readings under 100). The wind is all over the place, but mostly cross or onshore, making for a messy, choppy surface. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°, but that's about the only good thing going on. There's a long gap of real poor conditions here.
We finally get a bit of a pulse moving into the first week of September. Monday the 31st of August sees a jump in period to 18 seconds, but the swell height is still a pathetic 1 ft, so it's just a long-period groundswell with no size. The energy picks up a bit (125 combined energy) by the afternoon but it's still not enough to get excited about. The real hope is for the weekend – Saturday the 5th of September. The swell is forecast to build to 4 ft from the SE, with a period of 12 seconds, giving us a solid groundswell with moderate energy (393). The wind goes glassy on Saturday afternoon, which is absolutely perfect. The swell direction is from the SE, which is a bit off the optimum for the spot, but with clean conditions, it could be the standout session of the whole forecast. It's the only period where the surf is described as "good" and the conditions are glassy. Just keep in mind, this is over a week away, so treat it as a promising but not locked-in call.
The following Sunday, the 6th, it drops back down and the onshore winds return, so that window looks narrow. For a beach/jetty break like this, the long-period (12 sec) swell on the 5th might make it a bit straight, but when it's glassy and clean, you take what you can get. The crowds are often around here, so expect company if that Saturday swell materializes.
So, to sum it up, the best on offer is without a doubt the afternoon of Saturday the 5th of September. It's the only time the numbers line up for a decent session. Before that, you're just staring at flat water.
Rusty.
