The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what we’ve got coming up at Jenkinson’s (Point Pleasant Beach). I gotta be straight with you—this stretch is looking pretty bleak for a solid while. The first entry we see is for the morning of Thursday, July 16, and honestly, it’s not even worth paddling out for. I'm talking tiny 0.7ft surf from the ESE with a short 8-second period and combined swell energy of just 12—that’s weak. The water is sitting at 73°, which is about average for this time of year. So if you're hoping for something to get excited about, you'll be waiting.
We’re looking at a painful run of tiny, mostly poor surf through the first week. From Thursday the 16th right through to Monday the 20th, the swell barely registers. You get the odd morning with a light offshore wind, like Thursday afternoon with a clean 9 mph breeze from the W, but the swell’s still only 0.7ft. Nothing doing. Saturday the 18th afternoon has light wind from the S at 3 mph, but again, that 0.7ft ESE swell is just not there.
Things try to shuffle a little on Tuesday the 21st. Tuesday afternoon there’s a jump to 4ft from the S, but the period is a terrible 5 seconds—that’s pure wind chop—and combined energy is only 82. The wind is offshore from the W at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean, but those waves are going to be lumpy and weak. Not your day. Wednesday the 22nd morning brings the biggest combined swell energy we see for a while at 291, with 5ft from the SSE and a 9-second period. But the wind is a light cross-onshore from the NE at 6 mph, putting ripples on the face. It’s still poor, just a bit more push. This break is exposed and a beach/jetty setup, so that 5ft might have some grunt, but with that cross-onshore drift it won't be pretty.
Honestly, the best I can pick for you—and I’m scraping the barrel here—might be Sunday morning, July 26. We’ve got 3ft from the SE with an 8-second period, combined energy of 67. That’s tiny, but the wind is a clean cross-off from the NW at 9 mph, so the surface will be glassy. It’s surfable but very ordinary. If you’re desperate for a little slide, that’s your window. Later on, Thursday the 30th morning has a clean 6 mph offshore from the W with 2ft ESE swell—again, tiny, but clean.
Right at the tail end, Friday July 31st afternoon shows 4ft from the SSE with a period of 7 seconds and combined energy of 174—that’s moderate energy. But wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSE at 6 mph, and the forecast says poor surf conditions. That one is for the optimists only. This spot is often crowded and better suited to advanced surfers when it gets over 5ft, but we never see that in this run.
So here's the deal: we’ve got basically two full weeks of flat to tiny, poor-quality surf at Jenkinson's. No standouts. No big swell windows. The few hints of waves are either too short period, wrong wind, or just not enough push. If you’re a kiter, the afternoons with a moderate cross-shore breeze and a little bump might look more interesting than paddle surfing. But for you wave-hunters, it’s a long wait. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a quiet spell.
Rusty.
