The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this is a tough stretch for waves along this stretch of coast. The outlook is grim for the first week and a half, with barely a ripple to get excited about. We’re looking at a long, flat gap until around July 20th, and even then it’s not exactly pumping.
We start off with a whole lot of nothing. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, you’re looking at tiny 0.7 ft swell from the SE, with weak energy. The wind is offshore at times, so the water will look clean, but there’s just no power behind it. The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. This pattern of small, weak surf drags on through the weekend and into the following week. The combined swell energy is barely registering, often in the single digits or low teens. It’s heartbreaking, honestly.
We finally see a pulse of energy arrive on Monday the 20th of July. The morning brings a 5 ft swell from the SSE (energy 339), but the wind is cross-onshore from the NE, making it choppy and messy. The period is a middling 9 seconds, so it’s not a clean groundswell. This is really the only window with any size, but the conditions are a letdown. The following Tuesday morning, the 21st, shows a 5 ft swell from the S with a short, crumbly 5-second period and clean cross-offshore wind, but it’s just not going to shape up well.
The absolute best of a bad bunch comes on Wednesday the 22nd. The morning session at Jenkinsons (Point Pleasant Beach) should see a clean 4 ft swell from the SSE (energy 238), with a 9-second period and a light offshore wind from the NW. The water will be glassy and the waves will have some push. The afternoon sees the swell drop a little to 4 ft, and the wind shifts to a light cross-onshore, so it gets a bit ripply. For a couple of hours that morning, it’ll be okay. But it’s a short-lived window.
After that, we’re back to small, weak, and often windy conditions through the end of the month. The 28th of July has a 3 ft swell from the SSE with a 9-second period, but the wind is straight onshore, so it’s a washout.
The honest truth is, there’s no standout swell here. For a beach/jetty spot like Jenkinsons, the long period groundswells that do show up (like the 13-second one on the 19th) are too small at 0.3 ft to do anything, and they’d break straight anyway. If you’re desperate, the Wednesday morning of the 22nd is your best bet, but don’t expect any barrels. This is a lean period—sometimes it just be like that. Forecasts can change, but for now, keep the board in the car and the expectations low.
