The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a grim stretch for Jenkinsons (Point Pleasant Beach). We’re looking at a huge gap in quality surf. The first day with anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, September 3rd, so we’re talking about a solid two-week dry spell. From now through the end of August and into early September, it’s pretty much a write-off. The wind is nearly always onshore or cross-shore, and the swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, with short, weak periods. The combined wave energy rarely breaks 100, just a weak, sloppy mess.
The water temperature right now is 76°, which is a touch warmer than what we’d normally expect for this time of year, so at least the water’s pleasant if you’re just floating.
The only faint glimmer of hope comes on Thursday, September 3rd in the morning. We’ve got a bit of a clean-up with a light SSW wind blowing cross-offshore, giving us clean conditions. The swell is still small, around 2 ft from the East with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is a weak 98. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. You’ll be on a tiny longboard or a foamie, just getting some practice in. The afternoon on that same day gets a bit messy with a stronger S wind.
So, to sum it up: if you’re desperate, the morning of Thursday, September 3rd is your only real shot, and it’s not pretty. The rest of the window is a no-go. For a beach break, this setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing when the wind and swell pick up at the end of the month.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts.
