The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at La Bahia in the next couple of weeks.

It’s a lean stretch, I’m not gonna lie. From Sunday, August 2nd, all the way through to Saturday, August 15th, the surf is mostly a disappointment. The water temp is 83°F, right where it should be for this time of year, so at least that’s comfortable.

The first time we see a glimmer of hope is Monday morning, August 10th. The swell is 5ft from the east, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is building (235). The wind is cross-offshore, so the surface is clean. It’s only marginal, but it’s the best we’ve seen in days.

Then, on Friday morning, August 14th, the swell is again 5ft from the east, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 213. The wind is cross-offshore, and the report says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” It’s not a classic, but it’s the pick of the bunch.

The best day of the whole forecast, and the one I’d be aiming for, is Monday morning, August 17th. The swell is 5ft from the east, but the period finally stretches to 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 281. That’s the most power we see in the whole window. The wind is cross-offshore and clean. For an intermediate surfer, this is your window.

Between those few sessions, the wind is either side-shore or too strong, and the surf quality stays poor. There’s a long gap with no real surf from the 2nd through the 9th, and then another dry spell from the 11th to the 13th. It’s not all bad, but you’ll be waiting for it.

Stay up, Rusty.
