The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and uninspiring for the wave-riding crew. We’ve got one spot on the radar, Coffee Break, but it’s not going to be firing for a while. The swell is coming in from the east, which is okay, but the wind is mostly cross-shore or even cross-on, and that’s messing up any chance of clean faces. The water temp is sitting at a warm 84°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a wetsuit.

The first week is a write-off, to be honest. From Friday the 21st through to Thursday the 27th, the surf is just poor. The swell is small, mostly under 5ft, and the periods are short – think 5 to 7 seconds – so it’s all chop and junk. The energy is weak to moderate at best, with numbers like 130 and 135 on Friday, dropping to 51 and 64 over the weekend. The wind is up, 12 to 15 mph, and it’s cross-shore, so it’s just messy. You’d be wasting your time paddling out.

The second week, starting Friday the 28th, things start to improve slightly in size, but the quality is still poor. We see some moderate energy readings, like 184 on Friday morning and 215 on Friday afternoon, with wave heights around 5ft. Still, that wind is relentless, blowing 12 to 15 mph, and the swell period is short, so the surface is all cross-chop. The same story continues through the weekend and into Monday the 31st, with energy getting up to 266 and 348 on the Saturday, but it’s all onshore junk. The period is still short, so don’t get too excited.

The only real standout in the whole 16 days is the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. We finally get a bit of a window. The swell is small, only 2ft, coming from the east-northeast, with a better period of 8 seconds. The wind swings around to a cross-off, and it’s light, only 9 mph, so the conditions are actually clean. The combined energy reading is 101, which is in the moderate range. It’s not big, but it’s the only time the place is going to look tidy. You’ll get some clean little runners over the reef. The rest of that day and the week before it? Forget it.

So, there you have it. A long, dry spell ahead, with one decent morning on the 5th of September. Keep it in the back of your mind, but don’t book the day off work just yet. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, that’s the pick of a very ordinary bunch.

Stay salty,
Rusty
