The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Alright, I’m gonna be straight with you – the outlook for Coffee Break over the next 16 days is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of really not much to get excited about. From now, right through until the 24th of July, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is there, but it’s messy, blown out, and just not worth paddling out for. The wind is a constant cross-shore, mostly from the east, and it’s just chopping everything up. There’s a nasty cross-chop on the surface that’s killing any chance of a clean face. The combined wave energy is mostly in the moderate range, but it’s all that lumpy, wind-affected stuff.
We’ve got a solid gap of over a week there with no real recommendations. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no wetsuit drama, but that’s about the only positive.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the Saturday morning of the 25th of July. The conditions finally clean up. The wind eases off to a gentle cross-off breeze from the ESE, and the wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – but hey, I’ll take it. The swell is only 2ft from the east with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy is weak. It’s not going to be a world-class session, but it’s the only window in the whole forecast that’s actually clean. That’s the one to keep an eye on if you’re desperate for a paddle.
After that, it’s right back into the poor and choppy stuff for the rest of the period. The swell does get a bit bigger at times, like on the 28th of July when it’s pushing 6ft and the energy is strong, but it’s still cross-shore and lumpy. A reef break like Coffee Break needs that clean, offshore wind to really shine, and we just don’t get it.
So, bottom line: there’s one clean morning on the 25th of July for a tiny, surfable wave. Everything else is a kook’s game. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of this run, to be honest.
Rusty.
