The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s be honest, the next 16 days at Coffee Break are a total bust. The numbers are all telling the same story: poor surf conditions, day after day. The water is a warm 83°, which is normal for this time of year, but that’s the only good thing I can say.
From Thursday afternoon, July 16th, all the way through to Friday, July 31st, every single session is a “poor” call. The wind is almost always out of the east or east-northeast, blowing 9 to 19 mph, and it’s always a cross-shore breeze. That’s gonna chop the surface up into a lumpy mess.
There is some swell in the water, with heights getting up to 5 to 6 feet at times, and the combined energy gets into the moderate range, hitting a peak of 371 on the 26th. But it’s all for nothing with that wind. The swell period is mostly short, between 4 and 8 seconds, so it’s just weak, wind-driven slop. There’s no glassy window, no offshore wind to save it. The only slight change might be on the morning of Thursday, July 23rd, where the wind drops to a gentle 9 mph, but it’s still cross-shore, and the swell is only 3 feet with an 8-second period. Still a poor call.
The second week sees a bit more size, with heights around 5 to 6 feet and energy in the 200s and 300s, but the wind is still a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. To be honest, with that consistent cross-shore wind and a bit of a bump, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, the bottom line: no decent surf at Coffee Break for the entire 16-day run. It’s a blank stretch. The spot is usually pretty consistent, so it won’t stay this flat and blown out forever, but for now, you’re not missing anything.
