The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks look pretty grim for getting a proper surf on the cards. We’ve got a solid stretch of days where the conditions are just not playing the game. It’s a barren run for a while, and you might be better off doing something else for the first week or so.
We’re talking a real dry spell. The swell is there, but it’s weak, and the wind is constantly messing things up. From Monday the 17th all the way through to Monday the 24th, it’s all cross-shore or cross-onshore breezes which are chopping up the line-up. The energy is weak to moderate, with combined readings mostly in the 100s and sometimes dipping below, so there’s just no push in the water. It’s a write-off.
The only real standout in this entire 16-day window is looking like Wednesday the 26th of August, particularly the morning session. The swell finally kicks in a bit, with a 6ft east swell rolling in at 12 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and the combined energy jumps way up to 905, which shows there’s some real grunt behind it. The wind is a light cross-shore from the ENE, which is not perfect, but it’s manageable. This is the pick of the fortnight, no doubt. Coffee Break is a consistent reef break that’s exposed to the swell, and this is the day you want to be there. The swell direction is E, which is not the absolute optimum NNE direction, but with that energy, it should still be working. Just keep in mind the water temp is sitting at 84°F, which is about average for this time of year, so not a drama.
After that, things settle back down. The next couple of days, the 27th and 28th, have a little bit of energy but the winds are cross-onshore or just messy again, and the swell drops right back off. It’s not worth the effort, to be honest.
So, to put it simply: wait it out, and be ready for that Wednesday the 26th. That’s the day the ocean finally wakes up and gives us something half decent. Everything else is a frustrating mix of poor quality and onshore chop.
Rusty.
