The Lowdown
Alright, let’s see what we’ve got. Rusty here.
Right off the bat, I’m looking at the next 16 days and, honestly, there’s a real bummer of a stretch ahead. The first real shot of anything decent doesn’t show up until the very end of the month. For the bulk of this forecast, from Saturday the 22nd of August all the way through to the end of the month, the conditions are just poor. The wind is cross-shore or cross-onshore and the wave quality is shot. You’ll see some swell heights around 3 ft up to 6 ft, but the energy is weak to moderate (between 57 and 351), and the period is short and choppy. It’s all just slop. Not worth paddling out for.
The only break on the radar is Coffee Break, a reef setup. It’s consistent, which is a small mercy, but it’s not doing us any favours right now. Even though the water temperature is a warm 84°F and dead average for this time of year, the winds are just wrong. The optimum swell direction is from the NNE, but every signal we get is from the E or ENE, so it’s not lighting up the reef properly.
Now, the standout moment—if you can call it that—is the morning of Monday the 31st of August. We see a bump up to 6 ft swell from the east, with a period jumping to 9 seconds and wave energy jumping to 797 (strong). The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the ENE, which should keep the surface clean. The forecast says “marginal surf”, but this is the only window that looks worth a look. The swell direction is still not ideal for the reef, but the size and period are a step up. After that, the energy drops back and the wind turns more cross-onshore, so that Monday morning window is your only real chance to get wet.
The rest of the first week of September is a write-off. The swell drops back to under 5 ft, and it’s short period, with more cross-onshore wind. The energy is weak (62 to 119). It’s just not happening.
So, bottom line: if you’re keen, pencil in the morning of the 31st of August at Coffee Break. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. The rest of the time, save your wax.
Rusty.
