The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s the lowdown for La Puntilla (Puerto Plata). This reef break is consistent and open to swell from the NNE, which is its money direction. Water temp’s about 83°F right now, pretty normal for the season.

Honestly, the whole 16-day stretch is a bummer. From Tuesday the 4th of August through Wednesday the 19th of August, every single reading says “poor surf conditions.” That’s a 16-day dry spell. The wind’s always cross-shore, never turning proper offshore, and it’s blowing 9 to 19 mph, so it stays lumpy and choppy. Swell sizes run from 3 ft to 6 ft, but the period is short – mostly 4 to 8 seconds – so the energy’s weak. Early on you get combined swell energy numbers like 94 (weak), and later it climbs to moderate stuff like 316 and 417 around the 13th and 15th of August, but the cross-wind kills it.

No standout days for paddle surfing. The biggest energy hits from the 14th to the 16th of August, with 6 ft to 6 ft swell, period up to 8 seconds, and energy from 340 to 417 – that’s moderate to strong. But it’s all cross-shore wind and chop. Might look more interesting for kite surfers, honestly.

One sniff of hope: Wednesday the 19th of August morning shows a clean wind state with cross-off at 12 mph and a 3 ft ENE swell, 8-second period (97 energy). That’s the cleanest moment, but it’s tiny. For the rest, it’s a no-go.

Blank runs happen here, but things change quick.

Rusty.
