Alright, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat on what’s coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks.
Gotta be straight with you, mate: it’s a tough watch. We’ve got surf almost every day, but the quality is trashed. That easterly wind is going to be howling cross-on shore nearly the whole time, turning everything into a choppy, lumpy mess. The swell is short-period windswell coming from the east, with periods of 6 to 8 seconds, so no real power or shape to it. The combined wave energy starts light and builds up, so there’s some push, but it’s never going to look good.
For Cabarete, the water is about 83°F, which is normal for this time of year.
The action kicks off on Saturday, July 4th. A small 0.9m (3ft) easterly swell, but with 12-16 mph cross-on winds, it’s going to be poor. That same story runs through Sunday and Monday as the swell pushes up to about 1.3m (4ft), but the wind stays ugly and bumpy.
Tuesday the 7th sees the swell building to about 1.5m (5ft), and by Wednesday the 8th it’s around 1.6m (5ft) with a slightly better 8-second period. The energy is moderate, but again, that wind is just too strong and from the wrong angle. It’ll be lumpy and hard work.
And that’s the loop, mate. Through all of the second week, from the 9th onwards, it’s the same story: 1.2m to 1.6m (4ft to 5ft) easterly windswell with those 16-22 mph cross-on trades. The energy comes and goes, but without a break in the wind, it’s all for nothing.
There’s no standout here. No clean windows, no long-period groundswell. If you just need to get out, you’ll be battling the chop and the breeze every time. For beginners, the bigger days around 1.6m (5ft) will be too rough. Honestly, this whole setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with that steady cross-on wind and middling swell. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor quality.
Hang in there. The pattern has to break eventually.
