The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for the next couple of weeks is a tough one for paddle surfers. We’ve got a long stretch ahead of no real quality on offer, so I’ll walk you through it.
The whole 16-day window kicks off on Saturday the 18th of July, and from the get-go, it’s a write-off. The water temp is sitting at a warm 83°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so nothing weird there. But the problem is the wind. We’ve got a persistent easterly breeze blowing cross-onshore, turning the ocean into a lumpy, choppy mess. The swell is small and weak, coming from the east with a short period of just 7 seconds, and the combined wave energy is only 174 – that’s weak stuff. This pattern keeps repeating day after day.
From Saturday the 18th right through to Sunday the 2nd of August, every single session is described as "poor surf conditions." The wind never lets up, staying cross-onshore, and the swell is undersized and messy. The wave heights hover around 3 ft to 5 ft, but the east wind just ruins any chance of a clean face. The swell period rarely gets above 8 seconds, and the energy levels are mostly in the low to mid hundreds, which is weak to moderate at best. There’s no single standout day in this whole run.
For Cabarete (the only break listed), it’s a reef setup that’s exposed to the swell from the northeast. It’s consistent, but with the wind blowing straight from the east, it’s just not working for surfing. The waves are choppy and lumpy, and the combined energy even peaks at 277 on Monday the 27th of July afternoon, but that’s still paired with a fresh cross-onshore wind and a short period, so it’s not going to be clean. Honestly, with the wind and the wave quality, this stretch looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
In short, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’re waiting for a good wave, you’ll be waiting until at least the end of the first week of August with the way this forecast sits. Forecasts can change, but for now, the gear stays in the shed.
Rusty.
