The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: the next 16 days are a frustrating watch for Cabarete. The consistent onshore flow just won't let up, and for most of the run, it's going to be a battle against the chop. It's a long stretch of "nearly there" but not quite.
From Sunday, 23rd August, right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at a daily grind of cross-onshore and onshore wind. Swell is there, but it’s short-period, windswell junk. The energy is on the lower side—mostly two-digit numbers like 74 (Sunday morning) and 81 (Sunday afternoon). It’s choppy, lumpy, and honestly, not worth paddling out for. This pattern holds through to Monday, 31st August.
Now, there is a glimmer in the deep end of the forecast. On Tuesday morning, 1st September, we finally see a shift. The wind eases to a gentle breeze, and the swell period stretches to 10 seconds. The swell height sits at 7ft, coming from the E. The combined energy hits 876—a solid, moderate pulse. The catch? It’s still cross-onshore, and the wave comment is "marginal". It’s not a green light, but it’s the closest thing to a pulse we’ve got. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild.
The only real standout—and I use that word cautiously—is the afternoon of Tuesday, 1st September. The wind swings *onshore* from the ENE at 12 mph, with a 6ft E swell at 10 seconds. The energy is 671. It’s still not perfect, but that's the cleanest window in the whole run. For Cabarete (Dominican Republic), a reef break that's consistent and exposed to NE swell, it’s a rare moment where the wind isn't totally ruining it.
After that, we're back to the same old story from Wednesday, 2nd September, through to Monday, 7th September: cross-onshore winds, short-period swell, and poor conditions. The energy drops right back into the weak two-digit range (e.g., 53 on Friday morning, 4th September), and the whole set-up looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with that persistent cross-breeze.
Honestly, keep your board dry for the first week and a half. That Tuesday, 1st September, is the only one with a pulse worth checking, but don't expect magic. The forecasts can change, but right now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
