The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Cabarete. I’ll level with you straight up: we’re in a bit of a flat spell, and the wind is not playing ball. What we’ve got coming over the next couple of weeks is pretty scrappy.
Right now, on Saturday the 18th, we’ve got some small swell pushing through, around 4ft from the east, but it’s short period stuff at 7 seconds. The real buzzkill is that constant cross-onshore breeze at 15 to 22 mph, chopping it all up. The combined wave energy is moderate, sitting around 165-172 (moderate energy), but messy. Not worth paddling out for.
That pattern pretty much sticks with us all the way through the first week. Swell stays small, between 3ft and 5ft, all short period east-northeast wind swell. The wind barely lets up – cross-onshore, moderate to fresh breeze most of the time – so the surface stays lumpy and poor. There are no real standouts here. The only break on offer is Cabarete, and with the wind direction locked in from the east, that optimum swell from the northeast is never lining up right.
We go through most of July like this. The combined energy does nudge up a bit around the 25th to 27th, hitting 220 on the 25th morning and 280 on the 26th afternoon (moderate wave energy), but the swell height is only about 5ft to 5ft and still that short period. The wind remains onshore and choppy. It just never gets clean.
Things stay quiet into the final days of July and the first of August. You’ll see the swell drop back down under 3ft by the 2nd of August, and energy values fall to 77 (weak energy). Wind is still there, cross-onshore or onshore. Nothing is changing.
Honestly, the whole 16-day window is flat and windy. The surf quality is poor across the board, and there’s not a single standout day or break worth chasing. If you’re desperate, you could poke around Cabarete on the 22nd when the wind dips to a light breeze, but the swell is only 3ft and period is still short. It’s likely to be fairly choppy anyway. This is one of those stretches where the kite crew will probably be having a better time than us.
If you were hoping for something clean and punchy, we don’t have it. Sometimes the forecast can change, but right now, just wait it out.
Rusty.
