The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the Cabarete surf scene for the next 16 days. To be straight with you, it’s not looking great for paddling in. The wind is coming from the east, blowing pretty much cross-onshore the whole time, chopping everything up. While there’s always some swell energy around, the wind and the wave shape just aren’t coming together for a clean surf. Water temps are sitting at a warm 84°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Starting from Friday, August 21st, right through to Tuesday, September 1st, we’ve got a solid run of conditions but none of it is any good. Swell heights hover between 2ft and 5ft, with periods from a short 5 seconds up to 9 seconds, but that easterly wind just won’t let up. The combined wave energy is moderate at best, with a reading of 131 on Friday morning, building to 299 by Saturday afternoon, August 29th. But it’s all lumpy and choppy. The wind shifts from a moderate to a fresh breeze, always cross-on.
Now, one thing to note: There’s a real standout in terms of wave energy on Thursday, August 27th morning (253 combined energy) and especially Saturday, August 29th afternoon (299 combined energy). That afternoon swell hits 5ft from the east with a 7-second period. For a reef break exposed to the NE, there’ll be some push, but with 19 mph cross-onshore winds, it’s going to be a mess. This is one for the experts only if you want to wrestle with it.
Looking into the second week, the pattern doesn’t shift much. From Tuesday, September 1st, through Saturday, September 5th, the swell drops off again. Thursday morning, September 3rd, sees the best wind of the whole window, a light breeze from the NE at 6 mph, but the swell is tiny at 2ft from the east with weak energy (37). The rest of the week is all cross-onshore chop. So for paddling, there really isn’t a single session I’d get excited about.
Honestly, with that persistent cross-onshore wind and a reef setup, this whole period looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
