The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s dive into what’s on the menu for the Cabarete area. I gotta be straight with you – looking through the whole 16-day window, it’s a bit of a tough stretch. The wind is locked in from the east and east-northeast, blowing cross-onshore, which is going to keep things messy and choppy pretty much every single day. The swell direction is also coming from the E and ENE, which isn’t the optimum swell direction for this reef break (NE is what we want), so the waves are just not lining up right. We’re looking at a solid run of days with "poor surf conditions" stamped across the whole forecast.
From Tuesday 14 July through at least Wednesday 29 July, the setup is pretty much the same story. Swell heights hover around 3ft to 5ft, but the period is short, usually between 5 and 8 seconds, which means weak, crumbly, disorganized energy. The combined wave energy readings are mostly in that moderate range, bouncing between 51 and 476 (that 476 on Friday 24 July afternoon actually shows a spike in energy) but it’s all that short-period, cross-onshore chop. The wind is a persistent 12 to 22 mph from the east or ENE, keeping the surface lumpy and bumpy. Even on the mornings when the breeze drops a little to 12 mph, it’s still cross-onshore, so you won’t get that glassy, clean face.
The water temp is running at 83° with a normal anomaly for this time of year, so at least the water feels fine, but that doesn't help the waves.
There is one little blip – the morning of Thursday 23 July shows a 14-second period swell (1ft from the ENE) but it’s paired with 16 mph cross-onshore wind and that longer period will just stall out in this setup. It’s a no-go.
Honestly, for a spot that’s consistent, this is a real frustrating run. The wind direction just won’t swing offshore (SW would be clean). The swell direction is off, the period is too short, and the cross-onshore wind kills any chance of quality. For the entire two weeks, there’s not a single standout session. If you’re a paddle surfer, you might want to sit this one out. The conditions are more suited for a kite session given the steady breeze and lumpy, rolling swell. Forecasts can always change, but as it stands, this is a blank run for Cabarete.
Rusty.
