The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s cut to the chase for Cabarete over the next couple of weeks. It’s a rough stretch for anyone wanting to paddle. That east wind is just relentless, blowing straight across the wave and chopping everything up. The forecast is all about that messy, lumpy cross-onshore slop.
We’ve got a long dry spell at the start. From now through the end of August, there isn't a single session that’s worth paddling out for. It’s not flat, but it’s all junky, short-period windswell with that wind on it. Sunday the 23rd starts it off with a weak 3ft wave and a 20 km/h cross-onshore breeze. It's just poor. The energy stays weak, bottoming out at 44 on Monday morning, before slowly building. By Wednesday the 26th, the wind picks up to 35 km/h in the afternoon, making it properly nasty.
The first real pulse of energy hits Thursday the 27th, with the combined energy jumping to 191, but the swell is still only 3ft and the period is a short 8 seconds. More push, but same messy wind. The weekend of the 30th and 31st sees the energy climb into the 200-400 range, with a bigger, longer-period groundswell arriving on Monday the 31st—a 15-second swell at 3ft. The energy is there (381), but again, the wind hasn't backed off. It's still cross-on and choppy.
Then, on Tuesday the 1st of September, we see the biggest swell of the window. The waves jump to 6ft with a 12-second period, and the combined energy hits 830. This is the standout for size, but it's a brute. That persistent cross-on wind at 20-25 km/h will make it a wild, lumpy, powerful mess. This is strictly for the experts. It's not going to be clean, and it fades fast through the 2nd and into the 3rd of September.
After that, the bottom falls out. From the 3rd onwards, the swell fades and the energy just dies. By the 5th and 6th of September, we're looking at tiny 2ft waves with the combined energy dropping below 100. It’s flat, full stop. The wind stays onshore, so there's nothing to save it.
So, what’s the final call? There are no good surf options in this whole 16-day window. The only thing that even gets close is that pulse on September 1st, but the wind ruins it for any kind of quality. If you're a glutton for punishment and a top-level surfer, maybe that's your window for a heavy, blown-out session. But for everyone else, this is a blank run. It's a typical summer pattern here, and it won't stay this way forever. Forecasts change, so don't lose hope. If you're keen, that big day looks a whole lot more interesting for the kite surfers than it does for us.
Keep the faith, and I'll be watching.
Rusty.
