The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks.
This is a tough one to write, folks. I'm looking at the entire 16-day window for Cabarete, and I have to be straight with you – there's nothing good to recommend. Not a single session gets a thumbs up. The whole forecast is a right-off for paddle surfing.
We kick off this Sunday, the 19th of July, and it's already grim. The wind is howling out of the east at 15-19 mph, smashing straight across the waves. The swell is a weak, short-period 4ft to 4ft from the east, with a period of a measly 7 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at best, hitting 153 (Sunday morning) and 182 (Sunday afternoon). The comment says it all: "poor surf conditions." It's choppy, lumpy, and cross-on.
This trend just keeps going. Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd – it's the same story. Persistent east and east-northeast winds, 9 to 19 mph, keeping the sea surface a mess. The swell height bounces between 3ft and 4ft, but it's all short-period windswell, never breaking 8 seconds. The combined energy stays in that moderate range, mostly between 74 and 191. There's no quality, no shape, just a bumpy, blown-out ocean.
We push through the end of July and into the first days of August. Thursday the 30th, Friday the 31st, Saturday the 1st of August – same story. The combined energy climbs a bit, hitting 245 on the 30th afternoon, but the wind is still a fresh breeze from the east, creating a lumpy, cross-onshore mess. The swell is still a weak 3ft to 5ft with a short period.
The only slight change happens on Monday the 27th of July in the morning, where the wind goes "on" from the ENE, but the rest of the data still shows "poor surf conditions" and the direction is still wrong for Cabarete. It doesn't save the day.
The whole forecast is a desert. There isn't a single standout session, not one moment where the stars align. For an exposed reef break like Cabarete, which needs a clean, offshore wind from the SW, getting a constant cross-on from the east is a death sentence for the surf quality. The set-up is far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.
With this kind of persistent poor quality, I'd say don't hold your breath. It's a blank run, plain and simple. The forecasts can change, but right now, there's nothing to chase.
Rusty.
