Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Los Pocitos over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start here. The surf’s going to be pretty ordinary through the first few days, but don’t write it off just yet. The real action kicks in from Thursday the 9th of July, and that’s where we’ll see the best of it. The energy picks up nicely, with clean, offshore winds making things proper fun.
Friday 3rd July – It’s small with a glassy surface, but the swell is weak. Waves around 4 ft from the ENE, but period is short (7 seconds), so it’s a bit fat and mushy. Combined wave energy is weak (158). Not much to get excited about, but you could get a few if you’re desperate.
Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th July – Still small, but the wind turns offshore from the east. Swell hangs around 3 ft to 4 ft from the ENE, period still short. A bit cleaner, especially Sunday morning with a gentle offshore breeze, but the energy is still low (112-113). Fun for a longboard, but nothing to rush for.
Monday 6th to Wednesday 8th July – Offshore winds continue (E to ESE, 6-12 mph). Swell slowly builds to 5 ft on Monday afternoon, period stuck at 6-7 seconds. Wave energy starts to tick up a bit (160 on Monday, 173 on Wednesday afternoon), but still very ordinary conditions overall.
Thursday 9th & Friday 10th July – THE STANDOUT
Now we’re talking. Thursday morning sees the swell jump to 6 ft from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds – that’s a bit more push. Offshore wind from the east at 12 mph keeps it clean. Combined energy jumps to moderate (353-382). This is the best stretch of the whole forecast. Expect good, clean, surfable waves. The 6 ft is a solid head-high, but not too big for intermediates. Friday 10th holds that same size and quality, with a gentler offshore breeze in the afternoon. If you can only pick one window, this is it.
Saturday 11th to Sunday 12th July – Swell backs off a touch to 4-6 ft, but still from the ENE with 7-8 second period. Offshore winds hold (E to ENE, 9-12 mph). Energy drops a bit but stays moderate (213-289). Still good, clean surf, just not as punchy as the peak days.
Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th July – Swell stays around 5-6 ft, with persistent offshore winds. Energy remains moderate (191-319). Conditions stay clean, especially Tuesday 14th with moderate breeze and good energy (319). Nothing world-class, but consistent and rideable.
Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th July – The swell starts to fade. Thursday through Saturday morning sees waves dropping to 3-4 ft, period shortening to 6-7 seconds. Offshore wind is lighter (6-9 mph). Energy falls back to weak (67-154). It’s not a complete flat spell, but the fun’s definitely winding down.
One thing to note – the swell here is short-period (6-8 seconds) throughout, so it’s more of a windswell than a groundswell. That means waves won’t have the same power or shape as a long-period groundswell, but with consistent offshore winds, it should still offer plenty of fun, especially during that Thursday 9th to Friday 10th window.
Crowds can show up here sometimes, so keep your eyes open, but with conditions this clean and consistent, it’s worth sharing a few waves.
Overall: The first week is a slow burn, then Thursday 9th and Friday 10th July are the clear standouts. After that, it holds up pretty well for a few more days before fading. Get out there when the wind’s offshore and the swell’s up.
Rusty.
