The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

The next couple of weeks are going to be a real mixed bag for us here at Los Pocitos (Baja California Sur). We’ve got a block of small, short-period windswell that’s going to keep things rideable but pretty average for a while. The good news is that there’s a pulse of proper energy lining up for the end of the month that looks like the standout of the whole period. We just gotta be patient.

Things kick off with a bit of push on Friday morning. We’re looking at waves around 4.9ft from the ENE with a short 7-second period. The east-northeast wind is offshore and clean, but the energy is weak, with a combined swell energy of 250. The water temp is a warm 82°, which is right where it should be for this time of year. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for them.

Saturday and Sunday drop off in size, down to around 3ft to 3.6ft. The winds stay clean and light, with the swell still coming from the NE, but the energy just isn’t there. This is small-wave territory, so bring the groveler. The water is still plenty warm.

The start of the following week looks similar. Monday through to Thursday are all about small, weak waves in the 2.3ft to 4.6ft range. The period is short, around 6-7 seconds, so the waves will be a bit crumbly and lack punch. The winds are mostly offshore, which keeps the surface tidy, but this is definitely not the time for a big day out.

Towards the end of the week, we see a slight bump. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th have waves in the 3.6ft to 4.3ft range, but the energy is starting to fill in a bit more. It’s still nothing to write home about, but the consistent offshore flow will keep it clean.

Okay, now for the good stuff. The action really starts on Sunday, the 30th of August. This is where the outlook gets interesting. The morning shows a solid 4.9ft from the NE with the period stretching to 8 seconds. The energy is building, with a combined swell energy of 255. But it’s the afternoon that’s the real standout. We see the swell jump up to 6.2ft from the NE, and the period stretches to 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps way up to a strong 560, which is a big step up from what we’ve been seeing. With a gentle offshore breeze, this is looking like the best surf of the entire period. This is definitely on for the more experienced surfers; the size is pushing past the beginner zone.

Monday, the 31st, should still have plenty of size and power. The morning offers a strong 5.9ft from the ENE with a moderate 412 energy reading, and a light offshore wind will keep things clean. This is a solid follow-up day if you miss the peak on Sunday.

After that, the energy fades back down. Tuesday and the rest of the first week of September look like a return to the small, average conditions we saw earlier. Waves are back to the 3.6ft to 4.3ft range from the ENE with short periods. The winds stay generally offshore, but the writing is on the wall for a slow, grovelly stretch. The long-range stuff is always more of a gamble, but at this point, the lack of size looks promising to stick around.

So, to sum it up: don’t get too excited about this week, but make sure your calendar is clear for the afternoon of the 30th and the 31st. That’s where the real surf is.
