The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s brewing for our local stretch.
The next 16 days are looking like a steady, if unremarkable, run of small, clean waves. The standout period is the window around the 30th of August through the 1st of September, where the energy picks up a notch and the conditions really line up. Before that, it’s a waiting game with small, clean but ordinary surf.
The first real action kicks off Sunday, the 23rd of August at Los Pocitos. We’re looking at tiny 3 ft swell from the NE with a short 6-second period. The combined energy is weak (54). It’s surfable just about, but the main draw is the wind—light offshore from the East, keeping things clean. The water temp is 82°, which is pretty much average for this time of year.
Monday, the 24th, stays small and glassy in the morning. That’s a real treat—zero wind, clean as a whistle. The swell is still 3 ft, but the energy is even weaker (45). By the afternoon, the swell bumps up to 4 ft and the wave energy hits moderate (152). Still short period, but the offshore breeze sticks around.
The pattern holds through the 25th, 26th, and 27th: waist-high waves, 4 ft to 4 ft, mostly from the ENE. Winds are offshore or clean cross-off. The energy stays in the moderate range (100–153). It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s clean and rideable.
Now, the real standout in this outlook is Sunday, the 30th of August into Monday, the 31st. On the 30th, the morning shows 4 ft from the ENE with a 7-second period and moderate energy hitting 174. The wind is a gentle offshore from the ENE. It’s clean and the energy is building. By the afternoon, the swell is still 4 ft, but the wave energy gets strong (214). That’s the best of the run so far. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions.”
Then Monday, the 31st of August, the morning is a bit smaller at 3 ft, but the afternoon brings a whole different vibe. The swell drops to 2 ft, but the period jumps to a very long 13 seconds. That’s groundswell energy right there. The combined energy is 245—strong. This is a long-period pulse that’s best suited for a point or reef setup, but at Los Pocitos (a beach break), it might make the waves a bit too straight and tricky. Still, with a gentle offshore wind, those few sets that do wrap in will be quality.
September 1st keeps the clean, offshore theme with a 3 ft swell from the ENE in the afternoon. The energy drops back to moderate (144). After that, the second week (September 2nd through 7th) settles into a familiar pattern: small swell (3 ft to 4 ft), short period, clean offshore winds lasting most of the time. The energy fluctuates between weak and moderate (62–173). Nothing to get too worked about, but it’s consistent enough to get a session in.
If you’re itching for a paddle, the best shot is the afternoon of the 30th of August and the afternoon of the 31st—that’s where the energy is strongest and the wind is behaving. The rest is small, clean, and steady. Keep your expectations in check, but the board will get wet.
Rusty.
