The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what’s on the menu.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a bit of a struggle. We've got a long stretch of small, short-period swell and onshore or cross-shore winds making a mess of things. From now through August 14th, you’re looking at knee-to-waist high waves at best, with a lot of chop and cross-chop. The water is a warm 81°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so that’s one thing going for us.
The first real sign of life shows up on the morning of Saturday, August 15th. That's when a pulse of swell kicks in. We’re talking 6ft from the NE with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is strong at (793). The wind swings offshore from the ESE, so the lineup at Playa Corrales should be clean. This is the standout of the whole run. It’s not massive, but it’s the best combination of size and glassy conditions we’ve seen. This is an intermediate-friendly wave at that size. After that, the afternoon gets a bit more dicey with a cross-chop.
Following that, August 18th and 20th have some decent mornings too. On Tuesday the 18th, you’ve got 5ft from the NE, and the same ESE offshore wind giving clean conditions. The energy is moderate at (329). Then on Thursday the 20th, another clean morning with 5ft from the ENE and light offshore breeze (218). Both are good, but not quite as punchy as that 15th.
If you’re a beginner, stick to the 3ft to 4ft days, but be aware the winds are mostly onshore or cross. The 15th and 18th might be a bit much if you’re just starting out.
So, mark your calendar for the morning of the 15th. That’s the one. Everything else before that is a waiting game, and after the 20th it fades back to small, ordinary conditions.
Rusty.
