The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here, with the straight goods. This stretch of coast is looking like a real tough one for the next 16 days. The wind is locked in from the east and east-northeast, blowing cross-onshore the whole time, and that’s going to chop up whatever surf tries to show up. The water is sitting at 84°, which is just about normal for the season.

The first chance for a paddle is on Wednesday, August 5th, but it’s a dud. Playa Goleta (reef) has a tiny 3ft swell from the ENE with a real short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak (64), and with a 9 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s choppy and poor. Not worth the wetsuit.

Thursday, August 6th, the swell kicks up to 4ft, and the energy gets to moderate (146), but the wind is stronger at 12 mph, making it lumpy. Same story for Friday the 7th: 4ft swell, but the wind is still cross-onshore and fresh. The surf is just not clean.

The entire first week is a washout. The swell stays small, the period is short (under 8 seconds), and the wind never lets up. It’s not even a question of a hidden gem; there’s nothing to find. The wave energy looks more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers through this whole thing.

We’re staring at a big gap. Day after day of “poor surf conditions” right through to the end of the second week. The swell does get a bit more weight on the 14th and 15th of August, with heights hitting 5ft to 6ft and energy hitting strong levels (444 on the 15th afternoon), but the wind is still a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a short, racey, lumpy mess. This is not for beginners (over 5ft), and the chop makes it a grind for everyone.

The best you can say is that on Sunday, August 16th, the wind drops to a moderate 12 mph in the morning, but it’s still cross-onshore with a risk of thunderstorms. The swell is 5ft, but the quality is still poor. The whole run is a bust. There’s no standout in this 16-day outlook. The pattern is locked in with onshore winds, and the near-term forecast is reliable, but it’s not good news. It’s a rare blank run for this area, but sometimes the wind just doesn’t cooperate.

Rusty.
