The Lowdown

Alright, let me level with you. The next couple of weeks here at Playa Goleta are gonna test your love for it. The swell is coming, but the wind is gonna be your enemy almost every single day. We’re talking cross-onshore breezes from the east, mostly blowing in the 15 to 35 mph range, and that’s going to leave the surface all chopped up and lumpy. Not pretty.

The water is a warm 83°, right about where it should be for August. The waves in the early going are small to medium, 3 to 5 feet, but the energy is weak to moderate at best. It’s just messy out there.

The first real instance of any size hits on the 15th and 16th. Swell jumps up to around 6 feet, and the energy really kicks in, hitting the 300s. But it’s still short-period stuff, about 8 seconds, and the wind is still on it. You might find a few lumps, but it’s a grind.

The best stretch for a real look is the 17th and 18th. The swell holds around 5 feet, and the period stretches out a bit more on the 17th to 9 seconds. The wind eases on the 18th to a more manageable 15 mph, which is the closest we get to halfway decent. The energy is strong, in the upper 300s. This is your window if you're dedicated, but even then, it's not going to be clean.

After that, it’s a fade. By the 21st, we’re down to 2 to 3 feet and the energy just dies. There’s no punch left.

So, for the few days around the 15th through to the 18th, that's where you need to point your board. But honestly, with that swell and that wind, it’s going to be more of a battle for the kitesurfers. If you’re set on a paddle, come prepared for a fight.

Rusty.
