The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's on offer for the Gulf side of things.

Honestly, mate, it's been a grim stretch of weather for us. The wind has been a nightmare, just constantly cross-on or onshore, making a mess of everything. The first week and a half is basically a write-off. We're looking at July 27th through to, well, almost the end of the first week of August with nothing but "poor surf conditions" day after day. That's a solid ten-day stretch of chop and lumps, not worth paddling out for.

Then, finally, we get a tiny glimmer. On Sunday morning, August 2nd, the wind drops right out to glassy conditions. The water is a warm 84°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The swell is a small 4ft out of the SSE, but with a 5-second period, so it's a bit of a weak, short-period windswell. The combined energy is only 82, so it's weak, but that glassy surface will make it look a million times better than anything else we've seen. You'll find me at Corpus Christi that morning. The swell direction is from the SSE, right in its optimum SE window, so it'll wrap in okay. It's a breakwater, so it's a forgiving wave for a beginner, but it's rated as "inconsistent," so expect to wait for the sets. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so there might be a few others with the same idea.

After that fleeting moment of glory? Right back to the cross-on mess for the rest of the 16-day window. The surf quality just doesn't get there. The swell does pick up a bit of energy on August 11th, hitting 146 in the combined energy (moderate), but it's still 4ft from the SE with a 6-second period and the wind is back onshore, ruining it. For a beach and breakwater setup, with that onshore wind, honestly, it's more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle folk.

So, there's one real stand-out: the glassy morning on Sunday, August 2nd. It's not going to be epic, but it'll be the cleanest wave we've seen in a fortnight. The rest of the window is a lot of looking at the forecast and hoping for a change.

Rusty.
