The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down the next two weeks here. It’s a bit of a slow burner, to be honest. The swell is coming from the SW, which is what this break loves, but the wind and wave quality are all over the place. The water temp is 32°, which is a solid few degrees warmer than usual – feels like a bathtub.
The first window that’s actually worth a look is Monday afternoon, the 17th of August. We’ve got a clean little 3ft SW swell, with a 15-second period. The wind goes light and cross-off from the NNE, so it should be glassy. The combined energy is moderate at 383. It’s small but it’s clean – that’s the best we’ve got for a while.
After that, it’s mostly junk. A few marginal mornings, but the wind is either cross-on or straight onshore, and the waves are just sad. Nothing to write home about.
The real standout is Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We’re looking at a 2ft SW groundswell, but the period is a very long 16 seconds. That’s proper energy for a point-and-river break like Barron Rivermouth, and it should wrap in beautifully. The wind is light and cross-off from the SE, keeping the surface smooth. The combined energy is 320 – solid. This is the session. Just be aware that this spot can get a crowd at times.
Heading into the second week, things get a bit more interesting. By Saturday the 29th of August, the swell is up to about 4ft from the SW, with a 16-second period. The wind is light and cross-on from the south, and the energy jumps to a strong 574. That’s a fair bit of water moving, and for anyone who isn’t solid, that’s getting a bit heavy. But for the experienced crew, that long period and the right direction mean Barron Rivermouth will be firing.
Bottom line: if you only get one session, make it Saturday the 22nd for clean, fun waves. If you want a bit more size and can handle a bit of chop, Saturday the 29th has more power. The first week is mostly a waiting game.
