The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk surf for the Barron Rivermouth (point/river setup) over the next 16 days.
The overall pattern is pretty quiet for the first week. We’ve got small, long-period SW groundswell pushing in, but the size stays small—around 2 to 2.5 ft most days. The combined energy is moderate, sitting between 140 and 350 on the scale. Not much power behind it. The standout window is actually the first session: Tuesday 18 August morning. It’s glassy, clean, water temp is 89.2° – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll feel that. Swell is 2.5 ft from the SW with a juicy 14-second period. At a river mouth/point, that longer period should wrap in nicely, not break too straight. It’s the best on offer—good surf conditions, small but clean.
Wednesday 19 August morning is similar: glassy again, same 2.5 ft SW swell, period up to 15 seconds. Combined energy at 339 (moderate). Worth a look if Tuesday doesn’t work. Afternoons both days get chopped up by cross-onshore wind, so morning sessions are the go.
Thursday 20 August through to the end of the first week is mostly marginal. Swell drops a touch to 1.5–2 ft, winds switch around, and confidence is low. Friday 21 August morning is glassy but only 2 ft and a shorter 13-second period—surfable but ordinary. From there, we hit a stretch of poor or marginal conditions until the weekend of 29–30 August. That’s about a week of lackluster options.
Then we get a bit more energy. Saturday 29 August morning shows 3.5 ft SW swell with a 16-second period, combined energy up to 654 (moderate to strong). That’s the best swell size and period in the whole run. But the wind is cross-on, and it’s still rated as marginal—so not a clean standout, but for a river/point it might offer some grunty, long-interval waves if the tide allows. Sunday 30 August morning: 3.5 ft SW, period drops to 14 seconds, energy 483—same cross-on wind, still marginal. Not a guarantee, but the size is there.
Into the second week, Monday 31 August morning is cross-shore with 3 ft SW, 14-second period. Tuesday 1 September morning is similar but smaller. Wednesday 2 September morning pushes up to 3.5 ft SW with a 12-second period, combined energy at 631—still moderate/strong, but wind is cross and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. The Wednesday afternoon shows 4 ft SW, period 12 seconds, energy 702 (strong), and onshore wind—messy but biggish for the spot.
Overall, the first week is small and clean only on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The second week has more size but less clean conditions. The real standout is Tuesday morning 18 August: glassy, warm water, small but clean lines at the rivermouth. Saturday 29 August has the most swell but the wind isn’t doing it any favours. If you’re beginner-friendly, keep it to those tiny mornings—anything over 3.5 ft here can get a bit much if you’re not solid. For experts, the bigger days might offer something, but the cross-on wind will test you.
