The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Barron Rivermouth.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell to get through. The swell is tiny and the wind’s messy, so don’t expect much until we get past this first stretch.

Thursday 20th through to Monday 24th August are pretty grim. We're looking at small, weak swell around 2ft to 2ft, mostly from the SW. The wind is cross-on shore nearly the whole time, which just chops it up. The water temp is sitting at 89° – that’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so a spring suit is your friend. The energy is weak to moderate (209 to 350 in the bins), and the period is either 13 or 14 seconds, which isn't bad on paper, but with the wind, it's just not happening. Not a single day in that run scores any decent quality for surfing.

Things start to show a flicker of hope on Tuesday 25th August. The morning session is the standout: glassy conditions with no wind, and a cleaner 3ft SW swell on a 12-second period. That's a solid little window. The combined energy is moderate (325), and for a river-mouth setup, a glassy day with a consistent SW groundswell is a real treat. It's not big, but it'll be fun, clean, and uncrowded if you get in early. The afternoon gets a bit blustery again, so make the most of the morning.

The rest of the week into Saturday 29th is a mixed bag. The swell hangs around 2ft to 4ft, mainly from the SW, but the wind keeps messing with it. Onshore or cross-on winds ruin most sessions, though the Friday 28th morning has a 3ft SW swell with offshore wind that could be worth a look – the energy is building (592). By Saturday morning, the swell pushes to 4ft (791 energy), but it's glassy with a slight air, so that might be a decent call for intermediate surfers before the onshore kicks in.

Sunday 30th and Monday 31st drop back down – 3ft to 3ft, onshore wind, not worth the paddle.

Now, there's a long-range glimmer. On Tuesday 2nd September, we get another glassy morning – 2ft SW swell on a long 16-second period. That's a really clean, lined-up wave potential for the rivermouth. The energy is moderate (357). Glassy, long period, and the optimum SW direction – that's a promising combo, but it's two weeks out, so keep your fingers crossed.

The real standout, though, is peeking out at the very end of the forecast. On Friday 4th September, the afternoon session looks meaty. We're talking a 7ft SW swell, a 16-second period, and glassy conditions. That’s a proper groundswell with strong energy (2720). For a rivermouth, that long period will wrap in and line up beautifully. This is big enough for experienced surfers only – it'll push over 8ft on some sets. The previous morning on the 4th is also solid at 5ft with cross-shore winds and a 13-second period (1426 energy), so that's a good warm-up. This is the pick of the whole outlook, but it's a long way out, so temper your expectations.

Signing off,
Rusty
