The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s shaping up.
We’ve got a window of opportunity, but it’s not a straight shot. The first few days are a bit of a write-off with weak, short-period swell and cross-onshore winds keeping things messy. The real action starts to build toward the middle of next week and into the following week, with a proper groundswell filling in.
The spot to have your eyes on is Barron Rivermouth, a point and river mouth set-up that picks up the SW swell perfectly. The water is sitting at a toasty 88°, which is a solid 4° above what’s normal for this time of year – feels like a warm bath out there.
Friday the 17th is a no-go. We’re looking at a tiny 1 ft to 2 ft on a short period, mixed with cross-onshore winds. The energy is weak (163) and the surf is poor. Saturday the 18th is better but still marginal, with a slightly stronger 2 ft to 3 ft and a bit more period, but the wind is still a problem. By Sunday the 19th, the swell energy is starting to ramp up (690 to 698), but the wind is cross-shore and the wave shape is just average.
The first real standout moment is Wednesday the 22nd in the afternoon. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the SW with a period of 12 seconds, and the wind swings easterly at 12 mph, turning offshore. That’s the cleanest window we’ve seen. The energy is solid (541), and this river mouth will be reeling off some nice lines. This is the pick of the week for sure.
Thursday the 23rd morning is also a beauty. The swell holds at 4 ft, and we get glassy conditions – a light SSW air at 3 mph. That’s about as good as it gets for a morning paddle. The energy is a bit lower (464), but the clean surface makes up for it.
Into the weekend and the following week, the swell builds. Saturday the 25th afternoon sees the swell hit 4 ft with a period of 19 seconds, and the energy gets strong (1190). The wind is onshore, so it’s not perfect, but that long period groundswell will wrap around the point nicely. Monday the 27th morning is worth a mention too – 4 ft swell, 19-second period, and the energy is very strong (1387). The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’s a little bumpy, but the power is there.
The second week looks more promising for size, but the consistency and wind are a bit more hit and miss. The long-period groundswell (over 15 seconds) will be breaking a bit straight at the beach, but this river mouth and point set-up will handle it well. The energy readings are into the four-digit range, which is strong. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th have onshore winds, 4 ft to 4 ft swell, but the periods are dropping. By the end of the month, the swell fades out, and the wind picks up again, turning it choppy.
Overall, the best bet is Wednesday the 22nd afternoon for the cleanest offshore conditions, and the weekend of the 26th-27th for the biggest, most powerful groundswell, even if it’s a bit wind-affected.
Rusty.
