The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Barron Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks.
The first proper surf window is a bit of a slow starter, but there’s something to keep an eye on. The water here is sitting at 89°F which is a fair bit warmer than usual for this time of year – a solid 4°F above normal, so you’ll be sweating in the lineup.
Sunday the 19th kicks things off with a small 3ft SW swell, period around 17 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, long and clean between sets. The wind is cross-on from the SSW at 6 mph, so it’s a little bumpy but not terrible. The combined energy is moderate at 730. It’s a marginal call, but if you’re keen, you could pick off a few. Monday the 20th morning is similar, 4ft SW swell, 16 seconds, light cross-on again, energy dropping to 684. Not a standout, but the park is quiet.
The real action starts building from the 25th July. Saturday the 25th morning has 3ft SW groundswell at 21 seconds – very long period, so it’ll be glassy and lined up at this point/river setup, with light onshore wind from the SW at 6 mph. The energy is 822 – moderate. The afternoon sees the swell bump to 4ft, period 19 seconds, and energy jumps to 1142. Still cross-on from the west, but it’s gentle.
Then things start to get interesting. The standout period is Tuesday the 28th July. The morning brings 5ft SW swell with a 17-second period – that’s big enough for intermediates, and the wind is light and onshore from the west at 6 mph, making for clean conditions. The combined energy is strong at 2787. The afternoon pumps up to 8ft SW swell, 16 seconds, but the wind swings NW at 12 mph, cross-shore, so it gets a bit lumpy. The energy is 3522 – very strong. This is the best of the run, but it’s edging into expert territory by afternoon, with that 8ft face.
Wednesday the 29th July is a washout for paddle surfing – 13ft SW swell at 16 seconds, but the wind is a fresh 22 mph from the south, cross-shore, and the energy is massive at 6732. The conditions are too blown out and big for most, and with the beach and river setup, this is more a kite surfer’s dream than a surfer’s. The morning of the 30th July drops to 10ft SW swell, 14 seconds, with light cross-on wind from the SW at 6 mph, energy 3348, so it’s cleaner but still big – only for the experienced.
After that, the swell fades fast. The 31st July morning has 6ft WSW swell, 12 seconds, onshore wind, energy 1303, but it’s marginal. From the 1st August onwards, it’s all small and poor, with stuff under 2ft and choppy cross-on winds, no surf worth paddling out for.
The single best session is Tuesday 28th July morning – 5ft SW groundswell, light onshore breeze, clean, and the energy is pumping. If you’re solid, the afternoon of the 28th has bigger waves but messier. The long-range window around the 29th and 30th is big and powerful, but it’s a gamble with the wind.
Rusty.
