The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be honest with ourselves – the next couple of weeks are going to be a bit of a grind for waves. We’ve got one main spot on the radar, and it’s not exactly screaming with quality, but there are a couple of windows that might just get you wet.
First, let’s talk about the water. When you paddle out at Barron Rivermouth, the water temp is sitting at 89°, which is a touch warmer than what you’d usually expect this time of year. Not a huge deal, but you might notice it.
Right out of the gate, we’ve got a few days of small, messed-up surf. Monday the 17th is looking rough with heavy rain and a cross-shore breeze making things choppy. The swell is weak, only 3ft and the energy behind it is pretty limp (383). For the next week, it’s all marginal. Tuesday and Wednesday are just small, with light onshore winds, leaving the surface a bit bumpy. The swell energy dips into the 200-300 range, which is weak. We're looking at knee-to-waist high stuff at best.
We'll see a slight pulse of energy around the 22nd and 23rd, with the swell period stretching out to 14-16 seconds. That longer period is nice, and this being a river mouth, it can handle that straight-breaking swell better than a beach break. But the size is still tiny – 2ft – and there’s a cross-shore wind on Saturday the 22nd, but it’s light. The energy is moderate (320), and it might be enough for a longboard and a few clean little lefts and rights on the push. It’s not breaking barrels, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. A touch of glassy conditions on the 26th afternoon is about the only time the ocean looks truly clean, but the swell is almost nothing.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Look past the next week and into Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th. We’ve got a jump in the swell – the Friday afternoon model shows it picking up to 4ft from the SW, and the energy spikes hard, hitting 1081 – that’s strong. The period is long, 19 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. This is the standout window. The wind is light, which should keep it clean, and while it’s not huge, it’s the best we’re going to see. This is promising, but it’s over a week away, so I wouldn’t book the day off work just yet. It could easily shift.
Saturday the 29th keeps that push, with a 4ft+ SW swell and a 17-second period. The energy is still beefy (986). Winds are a light cross-shore, so it could be fun on the point.
For the first week, the river mouth is the only game in town, but it's a lot of effort for not much. The setup, with the wind and the small waves, might be better for a kite than a paddleboard. But keep an eye on the 28th and 29th – if that forecast holds, we could be in for a few proper waves. Until then, keep your board in the car.
Rusty.
