The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s cookin’ at Barron Rivermouth. It’s a point-and-river setup that’s fairly consistent, and it likes swell from the south-west. The water’s at 89°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year – nothin’ crazy, but you’ll notice it.
First off, the start of this forecast is pretty sleepy. Friday the 21st through Monday the 24th of August – we’re lookin’ at 2ft south-west swell, mostly cross-onshore or onshore breezes, and weak to moderate energy (between 156 and 377). The wave comments are all “poor” or “marginal.” Not worth paddlin’ out.
The first real window pops up on Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. That morning goes glassy – dead calm – with a 3ft south-west swell, period around 12 seconds, and combined energy at 392. That’s moderate but clean. The afternoon gets a bit messy with onshore wind, but Tuesday morning is the pick of the first week. Not a big swell, but with glassy conditions and a decent period, it’ll be fun and clean for an intermediate.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th stay marginal – cross-onshore wind, swell hangin’ around 3ft. Energy is solid (365 to 419), but the wind’s not helpin’. Friday the 28th sees a jump to 4ft in the afternoon, with a 17-second period and energy at 789. But that wind is a moderate onshore (12 mph), makin’ it choppy. Hard pass.
Saturday the 29th morning is the same size – 4ft, long period – but light cross-onshore still messes with it.
Now, Monday the 31st of August – that morning, the wind goes cross-offshore from the north-east. Swell is small at 2ft, period 13 seconds, energy 273. Clean’s the word. Tuesday the 1st of September – both morning and afternoon have cross-offshore winds from the south-east, with a clean surface. The afternoon shows 2ft south-west swell, 13 seconds, energy 277, and the wave comment calls it “good surf conditions.” For a river mouth point, small and clean beats big and choppy.
The real standout is Thursday the 3rd of September. Morning delivers a 3ft south-west swell, a very long 18-second period, clean cross-offshore wind, and energy at 820 – that’s strong. The afternoon is 3ft with energy at 904, just a light cross-shore breeze. That long-period groundswell on a point break is a recipe for long, peeling rides. It’s the best on offer across the whole outlook.
Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of September keep the size (3ft to 4ft), but the wind turns more cross-onshore or cross-shore, so it drops off from that Thursday peak.
If you’re a beginner, most of this is fine – swell rarely gets over 5ft. Just steer clear of the choppy afternoons.
Bottom line: the first few days are a bust. The one to circle is Thursday morning the 3rd of September – clean, strong energy, and that long-period south-west swell. Tuesday morning the 25th is a solid backup for a glassy session.
Rusty.
