The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking over the next couple of weeks for El Anclote.
To be straight with you, the first week and a half is a bit of a flat spell. There’s really nothing to get excited about until the very end of the month. The swell is tiny, mostly hanging around 1.0ft to 2ft, and a lot of the time the conditions are just ordinary. You’ll see a few windows with clean conditions, but the energy is just not there. The combined energy of all swells directed here is mostly in the two-digit range, like 62 or 89, which tells you how weak it is.
We do have a bit of a run starting Wednesday morning, August 28th, that finally starts to look like something. The swell from the SW picks up a touch to 2ft, and combined energy hits 194 – still moderate, but getting there. By Friday afternoon, August 28th, the swell holds at 2ft from the SW, the period stretches to 17 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 330. That’s a solid, moderate energy, with a nice long period groundswell. The wind turns offshore from the NW at 15 km/h, making for clean, lined-up waves. This is the standout. El Anclote is a reef break, so that long-period swell will wrap in nicely. The water temp is about average for the time of year. Crowds are possible here, so keep that in mind.
Saturday morning, August 29th, follows it up with more of the same: 2ft SW swell, offshore wind from the NNW at 25 km/h, and combined energy at 287. It’s going to be a bit windier, and there’s a risk of thunderstorms, but the surf will be good for the crew that’s out there. After that, Sunday the 30th onward, the swell drops back down, and the conditions get messy again. The 2ft to 2ft waves just don’t have the push.
So, if you can wait, the last weekend of August is the genuine window. Friday afternoon and Saturday morning are the pick of the bunch. Don’t paddle out on the 31st – that Monday afternoon turns into a cross-shore mess with a chop.
Rusty.
