Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s heading our way.
Right off the bat, the first week is pretty quiet. The water is sitting at 88°F – that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, so don’t bother with a thick wetsuit.
The real window to watch is Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of July. Saturday afternoon goes glassy with a light NW breeze, and that 3ft swell from the SW (13 seconds) starts to build. The combined energy hits 339 (moderate) and it’s looking clean. By Sunday morning, we’ve got 4ft of SW swell (13 seconds) with a NE breeze – cross-off and clean – and the energy jumps to 577 (moderate to strong). That’s your best bet. Swell is still beginner-friendly, and with offshore winds Sunday afternoon from the NW at 12 mph, it’ll be real clean. Medium period groundswell, so it’ll have some push.
The spot is El Anclote – a reef break that’s very consistent and fairly exposed to the SW. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but crowds are possible here. The optimum swell direction is SW, and that’s exactly what we’re getting.
Before that, the week is small and ordinary. Thursday 9th through to Tuesday 14th sees 1ft to 2ft SSW swell, mostly clean but very ordinary. The energy stays low (83 to 170). Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th get even smaller and poor. Friday 17th is a write-off with cross-shore chop.
After the Sunday peak, the swell fades. Monday 20th gets messy with cross-onshore wind and chop. Tuesday 21st through to Thursday 24th drops back to 1ft to 2ft, with some offshore windows but nothing with enough size to get excited about.
So, wait for the weekend of the 18th-19th. That’s your best shot. The rest is a long, flat gap.
Rusty.
