The Lowdown
Alright, let me break this down for El Anclote in feet and miles per hour.
This is a reef break, loves a SW swell, and it fires up pretty much all the time.
First up, the early days are a bit of a bummer. Saturday the 22nd we’ve got tiny 1ft swell from the SSW and water temps way warmer than normal at 32°. The wave energy is weak (119). The morning has a light cross-offshore breeze making it look tidy, but there just isn’t enough juice to bother getting wet. Expect a lot of sitting around.
We’re looking at a real flat period. From Saturday afternoon through to Monday the 26th, the swell stays stuck around 1ft. Even with some glassy conditions, the energy drops into the double digits (84 to 100). It’s pretty much a sea of nothing.
Things start shaking up on Friday afternoon, August 28th. The swell jumps to 2ft from the SSW with a 17-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The energy hits 270, and the wind is a gentle cross-offshore. This is the first legitimate window to get a few waves.
The Saturday morning, August 29th is even better. Swell is 2ft from the SW, still with that long 16-second period, and the wind goes dead glassy (3 mph from the ENE). Energy is 304. This is the best surf in the first week – clean, glassy, and that long period will wrap beautifully around the reef.
Then we hit another slow patch from Sunday the 30th through Tuesday, September 2nd. The swell drops, the wind gets messy, and the energy is weak (96 to 253). Don’t bother.
Look to the second week for the real payoff, though with long-range forecasts, take it with a pinch of salt.
The Thursday morning, September 3rd, is a standout. Swell is 2ft from the SW with a massive 19-second period – that’s very long period. The energy is strong at 426. The wind is a clean 9 mph cross-offshore from the NE. This is going to produce long, clean lines, but expect longer waits between sets.
The Friday, September 4th is the biggest. Morning shows 3ft from the SW (591 energy) with clean cross-offshore wind. The afternoon holds 3ft from the SSW (649 energy) and stays clean. This is the biggest and best swell of the whole run.
Then Saturday morning, September 5th is glassy (3 mph NNE) with 2ft SW swell (437 energy). Sunday morning, September 6th has the swell shifting a bit west, hitting 3ft, with another glassy start.
It’s a slow burn, but the end of this period is serious. Mark the 3rd, 4th and 5th of September on your calendar.
