San Blas Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about San Blas.

We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up, but you’ll need to be patient and pick your windows. The pattern is a persistent, long-period SW groundswell that runs through the whole 16 days, but it’s not huge—mostly in the 2ft to 4ft range. The real battle here is the wind. Most afternoons get trashed by a cross-onshore breeze, so the mornings are where it’s at. The water is a balmy 90°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—like stepping into a bath.

The standout window kicks off on Sunday morning, August 9th. We’ve got a 2ft SW swell with a 14-second period (moderate energy of 272) and a light cross-offshore wind from the north. That’s clean. Then Sunday afternoon gets even better—the wind goes glassy, the swell bumps up to 3ft from the SSW, and the energy jumps to 330. That’s your first real session of the run.

Now, the absolute best on offer is Friday morning, August 14th. The swell is 3ft from the SW, but the period stretches out to 18 seconds, and the energy is pumping at 555. The wind is glassy calm. That’s a special combination—long-period groundswell, no wind, clean conditions. This is a morning for the longboard or a fish, and it’ll be a dream to paddle out. That long period means the waves will have shape and power, but at a beach-and-reef setup like San Blas, it might wall up a bit. Still, it’s the pick of the fortnight.

Saturday morning, August 15th is also a cracker: 4ft of SW swell, 16-second period, strong energy (661), and a clean offshore from the NNE. That’s a bigger, punchier wave, but still manageable for a confident beginner.

After that, the surf stays consistent but smaller. Mornings on August 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th all offer glassy or offshore conditions with 3ft SW swell and periods around 14-15 seconds—really fun, clean waves for the dawn patrol.

The energy does drop off in the final week. By Saturday, August 22nd, we’re down to 2ft SW swell with a weak 13-second period and energy of just 150. The morning is glassy, so you’ll get a wave, but it’s pretty ordinary. The afternoons are a write-off with the cross-onshore wind.

One thing: San Blaz is an inconsistent spot, and it’s exposed to the SW, which is exactly what we’re getting. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so on those glassy mornings, especially the 14th, expect some company. But for a beginner-friendly spot with this many clean windows, it’s a solid run.
